Honestly it’s crazy to me that the double down is looked upon as pure heart attack you can eat, if you were to put the double down in between two slices of bread, it wouldn’t get as much negative attention it’d just be a double chicken sandwich
That's true. For people who are used to consuming a lot of calories and fast food it's nothing but style change. Unhealthy people will continue being unhealthy and healthy people will continue being healthy regardless of the existence of Double Down. It is just that if any food is a perfect poster boy for heart attack that would be the Double Down, it just scream MORE MORE MORE FRIED FOOD
100% that is a concept I have been trying to bring up a bunch of times. People are pretty biased judging food, have someone eat a bit of bread and pasta it’s suddenly a gargantuan amount of carbs. But have someone just eat the same amount of carbs but only pasta no one would think twice. The double down is obviously unhealthy but it’s like 500-600 calories that is low for fast food, plenty of sandwiches are over 1000
As someone who enjoys eating double down i eat it once in a while it's not like I am a fast food addict i genuinely love the buns being replaced with fried chicken and its always delicious. Not people who claim to get heart attack and etc should know how to control their limits nothing can be overdone in life such as watering a plant with too much water it could kill the plant.
I will never be able to understand how people lost their mind over what was essentially a double chicken sandwich without the bread. Somehow, two pieces of chicken with sauce and cheese is magically 1000x worse than an entire bucket of chicken, or a regular chicken sandwich. Some people are wild, man.
Double Down was my favorite fast food item ever, hands down. When it was taken off the menu, I knew which KFCs would still make and sell one, and which would say they have to omit one ingredient lest they get in trouble. Then came the dark days when employees did not know what a Double Down even was.
The Double Down is effectively a crispy version of a Chicken Cordon Bleu, which is ham and swiss wrapped in chicken and baked. They streamlined the creation process and made it modular so that if it did well, they could run variations on it (which they did). But essentially that's what it is, a crispy cordon bleu.
ech, i ordered a double down once. It was disgusting. It was NOT crispy at all. And on reddit people are saying the same thing, kfc used to be good, but now its disgusting. Its very low quality fried chicken. My local grocery store makes fresh fried chicken and its in a totally other league than kfc. The grocery store chicken is actually crispy and has lots of soft white meat inside.
Honestly on paper it sounds healthier than the regular, 100 grams of chicken breast usually has 100 to 130 calories per 100 grams, while bread usually has about 250 to 300 calories per 100 grams, not to mention that protein is more filling and nutritious than carbohydrates. I'm on a diet and doing power-lifting and might cook a home-made version of the double down over the weekend.
Cut the fried dough, its basically keto diet Grill the chicken & slab it with beef patty, some celery, tomato & mayo as sauce Its the daily protein intake & clean of carbs
Huh? Calories don’t denote health, bread is much healthier for you than fried chicken even if the extra calories are just empty and useless, you are still avoiding the oil-fried crust of the chicken which is the only part that’s truly unhealthy (and imo the only part that makes it actually worth eating lmao, grilled chicken is gross even though it’s healthy)
@@TheLocalLt You should really check the nutrition facts on most fried chicken sandwiches. Double down beats out most of them as “healthier” because of the lack of bread on Carbs, Fats, and Calories plus more Protein. Still wouldn’t touch it because of the sodium though.
@@FunningRast my impression is that the excess sodium and nitrates that you get from frying food are much worse for you (and more artery-clogging) than excess carbohydrates. Isn’t bread basically the universal staple of the human diet?
You guys couldn't have timed this video any better as KFC is actually re-introducing the Double Down in the US starting tomorrow as a limited-time item.
The double down came into existence right around the time I was started to get into Intermittent Fasting, but also was trying to bodybuilder bulk. I have since just used it to maintain weight without counting calories, but I would love to see this make a return 😁
You should do an episode devoted to the Heart Attack Grill. In addition to burgers with a lard coated bun they have french fries cooked in lard, butterfat milkshakes and unfiltered cigarettes. Anybody who ways over 350 lbs eats for free.
Regarding the weigh-in, it's hilarious because there's a huge scale on the outside of the restaurant right on Fremont Street, so anyone can stand on it to see if they're heavy enough for free food. There are various hilarious challenges and such, and sexy nurses will wheel you in and out of the restaurant in wheelchairs. Ive actually never gone inside, but it's hilarious even just to watch from the outside.
On the very rare occasion that’d I’d eat one of these, I’d skip both breakfast and lunch, so I was basically starving for dinner, then eat all my daily calories in one meal. It tastes even better when you’re super hungry. I wish KFC would bring this back!!
I actually saw a thing the other day about how they ARE bringing this back for just a few weeks starting tomorrow, the 6th. If you got one near you, keep an eye out! This thing slaps for sure 🤙
It's baffling that they don't sell them year round. They are wildly popular despite costing more than any item on the menu and are super easy to make with only 3 ingredients. *In fact they cost more than an entire roast chicken!*
@@NinoBrown08no they aren't. If they were doing that then I'd actually be able to get one at some point. It only came back 1 time in America and its been gone for more than a decade besides that 1 time it came back. McDonald's sells the mcrib yearly.
I worked at a Canadian KFC when this launched. It was created to end a terrible launch of Chicken Fillet item. The double down was just a way to get the fillets sold till the end of the contract as we needed to have them in store. The Colonel sauce is also just a chicken flavoured mayo. We would run out of cheese, or sauce constantly and were not allowed to sell any with either out of stock.
Yes I enjoyed the double down, as well as the original twister wrap. What I do miss from taco bell is the rolled chicken tacos but they got rid of shredded chicken for some odd reason
facts about the sandwich: - The Double Down sandwich was first introduced by KFC in Canada in 2010 before being rolled out in other countries, including the United States. - The sandwich consists of two pieces of fried chicken filets instead of bread, with bacon, cheese, and sauce in the middle. - The original version of the sandwich had 540 calories, 32 grams of fat, and 1380 milligrams of sodium. - Since its introduction, KFC has released variations of the sandwich, including a spicy version and a grilled version. - The Double Down sandwich has been a controversial menu item, with some people criticizing it for its high calorie and fat content, while others enjoy it as a tasty indulgence. - Despite the controversy, the Double Down sandwich has been a successful menu item for KFC, with the company reporting strong sales and positive customer feedback.
KFC discontinuing the double down in the US just goes with the trend of KFC being good everywhere except it's home country. (True for basically every international fast food chain, but moreso for KFC)
Double Down was pure perfection in every iteration we got here in Australia. I made my own version. Two kfc fillets, fries, mashed potatoes and gravy in the middle. It was a masterpiece.
I remember eating this in middle school, while watching an episode of Ned’s Declassified School Survival guide. This was the only time food made my heart actively hurt. I loved it.
First time I had a double down was in NYC, 2012. I got hopelessly lost after trying to take the metro to central park and ended up somewhere else. I ended up walking 100 blocks back to my friend's apartment, stopping to eat along the way. Within moments of getting back to the apartment, I aggressively blew a hole through the porcelain.
Honestly I loved the double down almost purely for the sauce. It's genuinely one of my favorite special sauces in fast food history, along with Freddy's fry sauce.
I'm a Brit and also not a massive KFC fan, if I fancy fried chicken I tend to go elsewhere...but the Double Down was definitely worth the occsional indulgence as it bounced in and out of UK stores over the years.
@@SpaceCadet45s Have you ever had a double down? its disgusting. Actually KFC in general is disgusting. My local grocery store makes fresh fried chicken and its actually crispy and delicious. They change the oil regularly. KFC is soggy. My cowerker used to work at kfc and he said they never change the oil. KFC is disgusting.
I just purchased a Double Down about an hour ago. I came home and proceeded to eat it while watching this video. I didn't care at the time but I will admit I began to feel guilty every time clogged arteries or hearts stopping was mentioned. I still scarfed it down it though!
There was also a KFC sandwich where I live in NJ. it was chicken and waffles, its a waffle bun with syrup, and the one I ate had the Nashville Hot chicken and bacon in between. I was only brave enough to try it once.
**virus,** New Joisey? I cannot walk into YOUR NJ food places to order without first knowing how to speak Islam!! Da hell's wrong witchu people up there? Imma gonna slappa da snot outta yo' face wit da wet spahetti. Mama Mia!!!
Your narration is like a Stanley Tucci monologue - well-timbered, matter-of-factly said, with a veneer of humor just waiting to shine. Wonderful! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@draculastraphouse7863 KFC gravy is definitely dope, but I have recently been hooked on Jollibee Gravy and chicken. Just do not try their god awful "Spaghetti" 🤢🤮
Another awesome sunday video, Weird History Food! Thank you for making content for us viewers. If possible, could you cover one of these topics? *The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald VHS tapes & McDonald's Happy Meals *The Chicken Sandwich War
Probably one of the best fast food items to have ever existed. I was overjoyed when they brought it back; I’m hoping it’s something of a McRib situation moment type deal and we get it ever so often.
I'll admit I was almost tempted to try it, but never got around to it. But I have to give props to KFC's marketing guys. When McDonalds launched their Chicken Big Mac, which was just substituting some thin almost greyish fried chicken in place of the beef patties, KFC took some glamour shots of a modified version starring some of their own fried chicken in place of the McD chicken, parked a big truck with a light up sign of that photo in front of a McDonalds with the text "There We Fixed It"
I don't know what the macros on the Double Down are, but aside from the breading and the sauce, this offering is nearly 100% protein which would really be not as unhealthy as a traditional KFC sandwich would be.
Thank you so much for this video. It has brought to my attention that the Double-Down is coming back... And while I know I shouldn't, I'm going to have one tomorrow.
I actually had Popeyes's chicken sand which for the 1st time in 2006 and it was delicious. Then they either took it off or just improved it and re-released it.
I ate a Double Down as my last meal on the way RTC Great Lakes for Navy Bootcamp. I made the unforunate mistake of letting my RDCs know that fact and they proceded to roast me the entire time I was there and tried to work that damn sandwich out of my soul. Totally worth it.
I took a friend out to try the Double Down when we were teenagers fresh out of High School. It ended with us eating in the restaurant but my friend commenting that "It hurts my heart!" We can still laugh about that to this day. The Double Down is like a once in many months treat if you must try it but I can never imagine eating it on the regular. 'Tis quite tasty to be sure.
Fried chicken, cheese, bacon, deep-fried pickles, spicy ranch, and a brioche bun. Tis what the heart wants. Also, a fried chicken sandwich on a stuffing roll style bun with a mixture of the mashed potatoes and gravy from KFC would dominate during the holidays.
The Double Down is one of my favorite fast food menu items out there, and if it weren't so high in calories, I would have eaten it at least once every week
Admittedly, I actually miss the Double Down from KFC, and if they reintroduce it in the UK, I think that I’ll be extremely happy. Yes, one of the few items that I want to keep trying, as much as possible before I become less immune to it.
Double Down was available here in the UK in recent years, but our 2 variants, one with bacon, one without, did NOT have mayo! I had just ONE Double Down, without bacon!
This actually isn't as unhealthy as it may sound. Minus the fried and bacon factors, you actually have a keto diet alternative. There is no bread and therefore way less carbs. I had one today. It was pretty good. I wish they had a grilled alternative. ✌️
Bought a double down yesterday to try due to this content. I was only able to take a few bites before feeling Ill. A bit later I had explosive diarrhea.
I don't really care for crispy chicken. I'd like to see a double down with 2 grilled chicken pieces. Also. Can you do a food history on the Calzone? There are so many versions out there.
So mad kfc stopped their grilled chicken menu offering. It was good value and tasted great. Was also basically sold out every single time I went to get some :/
I’m pretty sure they actually DID have a double down with grilled chicken. I used to kill these things when I was younger, and even though I always knew they’d damn near killed you, I used to love them. Probably helped that my metabolism was still working well so I could just eat a bunch
The double-down must be a godsend to those who can’t eat bread, especially if you did it with grilled chicken. Imagine being gluten intolerant and being able to eat something like that. And if they cook the chicken in breadcrumb alternatives, it would be a dream come true
I never actually had one they when they were originally out but thanks to your video and them bringing them back I was first in line this morning to get one when they had them at KFC. I got to I-81 for lunch and the others in my fridge waiting for dinner. I think it might be the greatest chicken sandwich / dish I've ever had in my life!
I LOVE this thing. It's available at least once a year in the Philippines. I get it every time. I am somehow still alive, not yet obese, and with my heart in one piece.
I once got food poisoning from a nearby kfc in my city. for an entire week i threw up like 3 buckets a day,and i got hospitilazed twice that week I think the reason for it was high cholesterol,so if i were to eat this thing i would probably end up in my coffin.
Ever hear of the Meat Mountain at Arby's? It's every meat option they offer in 1 sandwich. I ordered that once, probably won't ever do that again. Besides the nutritional issues, they put almost no sauce and almost no cheese, so it tasted really dry and just overwhelming.
I remember this first coming out and I actually liked it. I never understood the controversy behind it. It's basically two chicken sandwiches without the bread.
It was my 1st year of college when I first found out about this bad boy in a KFC building next to my campus, needless to say the free wifi and numerous college work I had to do made me wolf down a couple of these bad boys over the years. especially during stressful exam season, me and the boys would stay from evening till the shop closed down and we had to be warned by the waiters to start packing and leave lmao
I thought that the double down was available in USA considering that Im from Puerto Rico and we're US territory. I used to order it all the time but I stopped because I was concerned about how bad could be for my health and this video kind of proved I made the right decision hahahah
I’ve never had the KFC Double-Down when it was available but I’ve always been curious as to why and how such a calorie packed sandwich was ever conceived. Like seriously, the idea for such a sandwich could only be conjured up by some executive’s coked up fever dream.
This video was a prophecy. The double down just came back yesterday. Because of this video I decided to try it for the first time and it was so fucking good. Sure I felt slightly ill afterwards but I kind of expected that. Worth it.
Why is this any more of a pure heart attack than the rest of KFC’s menu? All fast food menu’s are horrible for you, everyone knows that and eats it all the same 😂
Considering the timing of the video, I'm surprised you left out that KFC IS bringing back the Double Down for a 4-week run starting today. How did you miss that?
I actually lost a lot of weight and had good numbers when I went Keto thanks to the double down and the naked chicken taco from Taco Bell, it covered your calories if you were IF and only 15g of carbs.
I'm sad, because the Double Down is my favorite item at KFC. My friends also acted like it was a heart attack sandwich every time I got it. (I wasn't overweight) I still ask for it every time go to KFC just in case they will make it for me. I was shattered when I found out they canceled it.
im latin guy from Chile and is amazing to me how this type of food have and incredible fan base to the point that your healty dont import to much cuz you wanna eat more than 1 sandwich. here this type of food until this day is not a huge thing. thanks YT recommendations
This is, to me, the best special meal from KFC, bar none. It does away with bread and focuses more on the meaty side. I think other burger joints should allow a special 'burger patties-for-bread' meal once in a while
i just went and bought 4 of these to freeze for a rainy day . funny to see youtube recommend this video withing 30 mins of my purchase . my phone must have been turned on .
Despite my country being heavily sanctioned and having absolutely 0 American fast food chains up until 2019, I was fortunate enough to try the halal double down in 2016 first time traveling abroad. I ate 5 of them in one setting, good sandwich RIP in peace.
Double down has 540 calories. Big Mac has 540 calories. Daily Mail got the 1,228 calories off some random internet rumors which they stated in the article.
The double down was awesome! I’m pretty sure it was temporarily brought back last year or the year before and I was actually pissed off that I missed it lol
A very stigmatized food item, that really, nobody was going to eat in high quantities. It was a treat! I loved it, but I only really had it 4 times, over time. But I have made similar at home that I enjoyed more, without the grease, and a lot less fat, and salt.
