It is a very hard realization to come to, but so necessary. We can be manipulated far more easily by those who should give us the greatest protection. It doesn't matter how smart or successful or tough you are in other areas of your life, that need for a Mother's love leaves us terribly vulnerable. The realization and decision to stop the toxic influence and step away is so difficult and fraught with guilt and pain, but for many of us it is essential to survival. Blessings - Sherry

YahshuaBride (Sherry Griffin) Jewel's mother left when she was 8 so she never had her protection. I never had my mothers protection ever so after getting wounded over and over by forgiving her II finally realized my life's was better without her in it. Sure we all need a mother, but we don't always get what we need. I feel absolutely no guilt. She was always the one who threatened not to have anything to do with me if I ever did this or that again. I called her bluff because she did something that was unforgivable and it almost cost me my life.I than realized how dangerous she really was and all the times that she came close to sending me to the hospital but I was in denial.

I'm happy that you got to get away from, Meg. I can relate since I have a toxic family who made me so sick that I couldn't even go away and have a life, because all the troubles made me depressive and even suicidal... I feel glad when I see examples of people who got to get away from those sick environements, and I hope we can all find love elsewhere, and find our own team.

I completely empathize with her. Not everyone is made to be a mother. My mother had many failings, but if I had to summarize it would be Narcisstic Personality disorder. The many times that broke my heart was having to come to the realization (over and over again, because I'm stubborn that way 😏) that there is a huge gap between who my mother truly is and who I just wish she could be. I want my daughter to know that I will always have her back and I recognize her as an individual and not merely an 'extension' of me.

It is really hard to understand the heartbreak of having to part ways from a parent who is abusive. I had to do this with my father when I was 13 and then again at 19. We grow to be better people and leave the abuse in the past so that we can become healthy loving people and nurture and love our own children. It takes a very strong person to overcome and cut the cord. I am writing this only days after fathers day. ~I can’t imagine what everyone else gets so emotional about. I told my greatest dearest Friend, who started out more as a therapist but took me under her wing -Leo Dawson of San Diego and Carlsbad, Ca -I state this proudly -that my mother HATED me. She said that that it wasn’t possible for a mother to hate her child. Confusing, so what was this thing?, since she’d also told me “While I may love you, I don’t like you.” (-“May”?) 6 decades.. “mentally ill”? A monster? -Both. Certainly narcissistic to say the least, I do believe in fact, soul-less - they are here. But don’t take it personally. It’s their sh*t - not yours. It’s their projection. I should say their trumpism. There’s the model for the world. We’re just too dumbfounded that anyone can be like that. Stupefied. But we learn - we didn’t accept this second Hitler did we. I lived 15 years in Homer, Know the Kilchers. Grandpa Yule was -“difficult” - no, there’s that weird again - a trump. 2 of Natalie Portmans movies show these relationships - “Places in the heart” , the mother that shows up...(surprise, uncredited Sally Field, amazing as always) and “Anywhere But Here” -Susan Sarandon -I remember thinking “ ..But my mother was no where near that much fun - and she Certainly wouldn’t have done that at the end of the movie, unless a ploy to keep Narcissistic Supply available. Like the cop tells her -“ Don’t ever try to leave, until you’re absolutely ready to never return.”

Look at USA's prison and juvenile jail full of mother's problem. If only they were strong as Jewel they could have a different path. Some would blame it for Single mother epidemic in U.S. but no one really knows , even the crime rate was so high with those raised by single moms , that's a fact.

Jewel is a superb person and very talented singer and entertainer . She also keeps promises as she once promised to make an appearance in Alaska to the State Fair and the only temporary delay would occur if she was invited to be part of I Neil Dimond's world tour that same year which did force that temporary change. However , as I understand she recommended the contact person for Lee Ann Rhimes who was this young country singer in her very early teens I believe in which she agreed to and provided Alaska State Fairgoers that year a sensational and awesome performance, replacing Jewel. So , that was a great deed Jewel and her. representative, as well as promising to still return to Alaska in the near future. She kept that promise and returned to Alaska to the newly built Anchorage Convention Center and gave Alaskans a tremendous performance and concert that we all will remember and treasure. Jewel and her story and life shows her true love for Alaska and her growing up in a remote small community and still in my opinion is a wonderful and caring person and totally respects her roots and family . This video was an awesome story of a wonderful person as well as an awesome singer. God Blesses you Jewel and who you are!!!!

That is what psychopaths and narcissists do to their kids. @@tnijoo5109 There are resources for children raised by parents like this, but they are expensive and most can't enter the treatment center until the are an adult (sadly, when the brain is entering it's last phase of integration in late adolescence to about age 25-ish). We, as a society, do NOT protect or take care of children from these characterologically disordered adults, and we also PAY in many other ways for NOT protecting them and getting them help. Very few therapists ever receive the education they need to treat the actual personality disordered individual, much less perform a differential diagnosis, which is an education they would have to seek out post-doc (and incur more debt to obtain on top of what the doctorate already cost them).

I love Jewel's music is beautiful strong and angry. I had been abused by my parents. I really connected to her music. After leaving the home I thought I moved on from all that. I thought the abuse was my fault and I thought it was over since I left the house and grew up. I went on with my life. I did not realize that it was none of my fault till I was much older. I lived out of state and had very little contact with my parents. I showed up to see my mother on her birthday. My mother was turning 70. At dinner my parents started arguing and my father called his 70 year old wife a whore.Mine you she does not act like a whore or any kind. She is a respectful woman. I had no idea he still spoke to her in that manner. My 75 year old father was threatening to hit me. I am 50 years old. There is a lot more to this but bottom line is my mother will never leave this abusive relationship but I will no longer subject myself to it. I refuse to visit them again and I feel it is the absolute right thing for me to do.

You can reclaim your childhood and embrace your inner child. Be around nurturing and positive people. If your parents were dysfunctional or didn't meet your needs, there are older adults out there who can act as mentors and sort of fill that role in a way. Lastly, festivals provide a great opportunity to have fun, dance, and act like a little kid all over again, but this time you are fully in control of yourself and have no one to stand over you and reprimand you for having a good time :D Even just the release of playing a musical instrument is therapeutic and unleashes a lot of playful energy. Having a good laugh at a movie or a friend's joke. All these things are ways you can reclaim your childhood in your " adult " years.

@@whipmaster44 Wrong, and stop with the hate. She is one beautiful woman, inside and out, and has more talent than most performers out there.

I hear jewel on this. I realised well into my late 30s who she really was and her impact of her 'mothering. She always baited me against her golden child, anything I did was never good enough in comparison.

Mina Cerra I’m sorry. I didn’t accept the truth about my mom until my 30’s either at which point the pain of coming to terms with the truth: my mom was not a good mother to me, in fact she was terrible; it’s been difficult to take in

It's almost frightening listening to people with such awareness and strength talk about what has brought them to that point. The deep, deep pain is still there, but they have learned to live with it, or slightly above it. Listening to a song like "I Was Meant For You" brings me right back to times after a breakup when I felt so destroyed as a person, constantly brimming over with tears, dragging myself through every moment of the day. Anyone who has come through to the other side of such a devastating experience with insight and new strengths and skills (and a few scars) I consider to be a very powerful person. I'm very grateful for people like Jewel who have the gift of articulating these challenging experiences and feelings in positive, creative, even beautiful ways.
