The Heil Commander Automated Side Loader

Well, here it is, six years after its debut at the 2013 WasteCon (correct me if I'm wrong, I couldn't verify that - • New Heil Commander ASL... ). I believe the Commander arm is the newest arm on the automated side load market. This truck is currently making its rounds around the valley as a demo unit.
It's a pretty simple, quick design, almost reminiscent of Heil's 7000 arm. This arm is able to grab containers from below-grade and pick up knocked over containers. The arm does have to be extended out in order to dump, like the Durapack rapid rail. There's also a nice camera on the hopper pointed curbside that can assist operators with lining up containers with the grippers. They have not made a 300-gallon compatible gripper yet, and obviously with this hopper cover, you couldn't dump 300s anyway. "Spear mode" will close the grippers partway as the arm extends out, making for a faster operation. Another downside is that you do have to clean out behind the blade if anything gets back there - another reason why Scorpions and rapid rails have been so popular.
As always, a big thank you to those who helped with the video - we don't always just "stumble" upon trucks (even though it happens... sometimes).

WOW! For someone who has wanted to see the mechanics of this arm for 5+ years now, this was a long time coming! Thank you so much for finding this and sharing it with us all. I've got a mixed bag of feelings about the truck early on, but it seems to have a lot of potential. It seems slower than the python, but a lot less wobbly. I'm a big fan of that. I actually showed it to our fleet managers at work today. Great stuff!

Thank you for getting video of this! Ever since my friend sent me a picture of this truck at the SWANA Road-EO I’ve wanted to see a full video of it. I must say I am very impressed. Operation wise it seems very good. Very fast for a newer ASL. Mechanically, it looks like a nightmare. But we’ll just see if that’s true or not. The camera is a nice feature. Lining up to a can with the mirrors isn’t as easy as you think. That will definitely help new operators. Really like the appearance of it too. From the awesome graphics heil has on it, the LR paired with it, and they interesting look of the arm, definitely one of my favorite looking demos/prototypes out there. Great video, thanks again! I hope to see this become more popular in the near future!

This video came out really well! Overall, I think this system as a big future ahead in the industry. Looks like it was operated faster than some of the other arms on the market (namely Bridgeport). I like the fact that it only brings the cart up after coming out, and that camera looks pretty efficient for the driver. Thanks for being the first to document this, and I'll be on the lookout!

Speaking from the view of only an industry admirer/observer, this arm is kinda cool. It’s like a Frankenstein hybrid of the Formula 7000, the Rapid Rail and the Python. However, I’ve never been a fan of the telescoping arms. I loathe the RR with a burning passion, and the Python is such a gimmicky idea. I like simplicity, the 7000 in my eyes is the best example of that. Even though it doesn’t have the longest reach, it will (and has) outlast damn near every other arm out there. I think the execs at Heil were trolling their customers with the name “Rapid” rail 🤣. But hey, what do I know... Anyways, didn’t mean to be a downer, this was a great video and I was anxious to see the new arm in action!

Finally someone got footage of this! Great video, this truck seems pretty fast and smooth. Only problem i could see is that there’s not much bang power to get stuff out of the carts like in a yard waste route. Trash and recycling would probably be great. So glad you got this.

I just watched the video on how to operate this body, wow it's a lot to absorb. Heil posted the video on their channel a few days ago.

Congrats on being the first to get a full-length video of this bad boy. I'm really impressed with the camera setup, its been standard on Danish and German side loaders forever, it's nice to see here in the states. From a mechanical perspective it looks like a lot to break lol. Same with electronics. I couldn't keep up with the operation video made by Heil. Not as robust and simplistic as the Python, 7000, or RR. I'm happy to see Heil did something unique though, instead of rehasing the Pendpac or Currotto can lol.

Arm is mounted directly to the body itself... with as much shaking this thing does it’ll be constant patch work to keep it secured to the body. Mount it to the frame and it’s solid like the current arms!

This is a pretty cool looking arm. It’s mounted really close to the body and arms tend to wobble over time. I wonder if it would start rubbing up against the body and hinder operation? The camera to help line up the grippers to grab the can is such a simple thing you wonder why it’s never been done before. I can see that camera getting smashed or covered in dirt and debris over time. Excellent footage as always!! Happy New Year!

It's fast but I don't like it, looks complicated. Give us back the C-Frame 7000 and burn the Durapack Rapid Rail with fire.

John Sidwell you can buy a 7000 “C-Arm” from McNeilus. And same with Labrie’s Helping-Hand and Automizer arm.

Yeah I'm sure WM is gonna purchase one of those for me.

I agree, you see crusty old 7000s out in the middle of nowhere still working just fine, 20-30 years old. I just don't see this one holding up that long. But who knows. Lol the rapid rail....
@sidwellsk8er
@sidwellsk8er 4 года назад
I can't stand the Rapid Rail arm anyways but it doesn't function with the Durapack body and combining those two things is a nightmare. The 7000 arm works well on that body and it's a better arm anyways. Oh my goodness the older Durapack Rapid Rails with the skinny, tiny hopper were the worst. Now they have a full size hopper but you can't grab and dump a cart unless you put the arm out first...and they dump all the waste on the fallower panel because why put a longer offset on the Rapid Rail arm to match the body right?

Something about this truck is just extremely entertaining and fun to watch. I dig the way the arm shakes the cans at the top. Right after the arm’s undump, does the driver extend the arm out that little bit by choice or is it programmed to do it so as not to hit the hopper wall on the decent? Really innovative design, however I just don’t see it becoming too much of a thing in the industry. Thank you for sharing nonetheless!
@brianspencer6955
@brianspencer6955 4 года назад
It is programmed to do that. That is part of the "undump" cycle, where the driver pushes the joystick to the side and it automatically replaces the can to its original position. I agree, it's neat but it's not nearly as robust and simple as the 7000, python, rapid rail or the DP rapid rail. I just don't see it lasting as long as the models that came before it.

Interesting. This truck was only a distant memory in my mind until one day I thought to myself, '' wonder what happened to Heil's new arm design, have yet to see any youtube videos of it, nor have I heard word of municipalities/haulers buying them". I wonder if this design was a bust. The arm looks like it operates simply, but the whole mechanics of the arm looks ridiculously over-complicated. Any wonder we haven't seen them hit the streets yet until now? I wonder if they will buy.
