There was this time not too long ago, that they were basically known for the music and people who went to concerts. They gave no interviews and were hard to reach (by the mainstream media). These guys always did their best to be out of the ordinary and they built a whole wall of mysticism around them. Also, when live, they also try their best to not follow the ordinary concert disposition of the band. I've seen them live where Maynard was singing in line with the rest of the band (not the typical "frontman") and the other one he was mostly on the right and back of the band. They don't follow the self imposed, non-obligatory well...and even "obligatory" "rules".
If you listen carefully, you can hear some spoken word behind most of the music. "Consume, Be fruitful, and Multiply" is Bill Hicks, and then there's either Keenan or Hicks reading out merch lists the rest of the song
Something to be said for every TOOL song, the whole band is AMAZING. they play their respective instrument expertly. is there a weak link there? I dont think so.
Just an FYI this song is about an actual meeting of a "fan" and I love the idea that everyone who knows him will know this song is about him thinking he was going to try to school Mayard of all people. 🤣
I reference this at work with my tool fan coworker any time anyone says “you’re the man” in chats. I’ll go “if I’m the man then you’re the man and he’s the man as well”
Finally my favorite band... with one of the best FU's to fans that think a creative should live up to the image the fan has of them instead of be original and evolve.
I feel like a lyric in The Pot "fatty fingers" is a 10 year harking back to HwaP, where he says "beggin for your fatty dirty dollar", as opposed to "fatass..."
Cliff, you should check out one of Maynard's other bands, Puscifer. I'd recommend starting with "Green Valley" or "The Humbling River" if you haven't already done a reaction to either of them.
I've always loved this song (well I am desperately in love with TOOL, but that's besides the point) because he's calling out the fact that we all sell ourselves in some way. He is the Hook€r w/ a p€n!$, and honestly I just love thinking about that, ;P Spiral out 👁🌀👁
Some of the best tool songs violate your ten minute live stream donation rule and are 2 part songs so you should check some of them when your not live.
Or actually, on the flipside, Def Leppard started doing some hair pop metal BS pour some sugar on me BS and I haven’t gone back since BUT stoked for their success and support them doing whatever TF they want to do. I got High n’ Dry.
Has he done Stinkfist by Tool yet? lol Also Cliff, check out Painkiller by Judas Priest it’s amazing. Music Video is pretty flashy, especially in the beginning so beware of that
You gotta check out more. I have 4 favorite music acts of all time. Pink Floyd, Tool, Coheed and Csmbria, and Ryan Upchurch. Try lateralus. My favorite Tool song. If you ever want to check out C&C, try Neverender.
I literally know very little about the band members of Tool because of this exact reason; I don't want a reason to not like them on a personal level. Me and my husband have seen them live 7 times in the last 4 years and it's NOT enough!
If anyone wants a little more insight as to what Cliff is talking about with the music industry, look up an article by the sadly recently deceased Steve Albini titled "The Problem with Music." It explains how fucked most new bands in the 90s were, some of the incredibly shady practices of the industry, and a lot of it still holds true today to any act unfortunate enough to sign with a major. It's a long read, but Albini's perspective and insight as a major producer as well as showing you some of the typical numbers where the recording industry is up several million bucks and the band themselves are in the hole several thousand dollars by the end of their first tour is eye opening. Real glad music has moved to significantly more independent recording/distribution methods
If you didn’t explain some of the lyrics, I would not have known what the heck he said. 🤷🏻♀️🤬🤷🏻♀️🤬. That’s okay though, different strokes for different folks. Love Gmaw ❤️❤️👵🏼
