The Hell of the North??? hell no, this is the Hell of the Ashdown - a suprisingly similar cycling event given the grim winter weather and the state of the roads in the South East of England...
Always held at the end of February (2024 this year), The Hell of the Ashdown, also known as HOTA is a really popular winter sportive and places sell out in hours - though why is a mystery to me as its horrible (though that might be the exact reason...).
A route of just over 100k takes in all the major climbs in the Surrey/Sussex/Kent area and coupled with freezing fog and rain as well as flooded roads its a real challenge - but great fun as well, especially if your on a really cool vintage bike... Sean Yates`s `90 Seven Eleven team for this one, and it was spot on!

Used to do this ride when it was the Catford reliability ride back in the early 1990s,on steel bikes with 42/52 chainrings & seven speed cassette with 14/23 teeth.Toys hill on 42/23 after 50 miles was a killer but we used to get up it.

Nice... for sure you can get up these hills on old school gearing but a 28 on the back would have been nice for this one, Dan

Hey Dan, great to chat to you at the start - you are a strong rider and left us on first hill 🙂Great looking set-up you've got. And yes, my discs were super loud that day - which was great for over taking on the descents - built-in airhorns :-))

What good fun, thanks for the show. As for disc brakes rubbing....what is it about discbrake users, they obviously are all deaf...

Never had a problem stopping with decent rim brakes in over 40 yrs of cycling, in all weathers. You just need descent cables, outers, blocks and know how to set them up properly. disc brakes on road bikes are just a triumph of successful marketing but otherwise totally unnecessary.

Thank for making the point about tyre grip. I've never had a problem modulating rim brakes (either Exage & 600 Tricolour single pivot or Dura Ace dual pivot) or making them grip the rim. Making the tyre grip the road however....
@vintagevelos9517
@vintagevelos9517 6 месяцев назад
I`d agree - dual pivot dura ace will lock up a good tyre in any weather - fresh veloflex 23mm really gripped well on the day, Dan

Great video Dan . Nice of you to credit British roadworks for replicating the cobbles of Belgium. Laughed like hell when I heard you say that. Looking forward to your next video. All the best!

It was proper bad - potholes under flooded roads... Dan

Oh what fun! Well ridden Dan, and a very creditable finish time too. The roads are really appalling, God knows what the European visitors made of them. But the rain has been pretty so over plentiful and goes on. Actually the weather on the day could have been worse, though I was happy to be at home nevertheless. Bike, I’ll award it 4 stars, braking fine, but front guards, bit inadequate. Rider, I’ll have to dock you a star too, always carry a spare battery. 😀👏

Rode this in 2022 and enjoyed it. Always amazed as to why people dont use mudguards. My 2004 Shimano rx 100 dual pivots were faultless.

It was great finally meet you at the HOTA, USPS Trek 5500, unfortunately I didn't finish as my 7700 shifter decided to explode on Toys hill. Thanks for a great vid of your day, it looked treacherous but fun, roll on next year 👏👏

Yes I saw you on the way up lol, yes shifter let go 50 yds in from the main rd, got to top on the 11 but thought it suicidal to carry on, have replaced shifter with 7700 DA now so should be good, bet the Battaglin would have finished ok lol

You're a trooper. I don't like riding in the muck anymore so I'll take the name whimp, but riding my titanium bike is as always a pleasure to ride. I noticed all that annoying noise those disc brakes were making in the video, that's why I don't like them.

Yep, Its usually pretty easy to just follow a few wheels at junctions and just figure it out... doesn`t always workout so a gps map might be handy... Dan

done it twice once with two others second time on my own, top tip never do it with two riders who have done no riding over winter ! first little climb which isnt even 5 mins from the start they started moaning and carried on all the way around !

Well setup rim brakes on ally rims work really good for me - especially dura ace dual pivot - and a didn`t make a racket like a lot of the disc bikes, Dan

You looked so cool with the Merckx and jersey compared to all those ugly disc gravel bikes and bland clothing. Typical newbies all dressed in black on a foggy day, no wonder drivers hate cyclists. This sport used to be so cool.

Yep, always like to rock the period correct gear - given how crazy UK roads are I`m always suprised that a lot of riders like matt black bikes and matt black gear as you just melt into the background - plus there`s some really cool modern team kits (Astana and EF Education spring to mind) if you want to go modern, Dan

Yeah, what is it with all the black everything? Looks like a team of undertakers on the road. Cyclists used to be such a colourful bunch, but now boring as hell. I just wore my Alfu Lum jacket, red and white hoops, beautiful!

Why would you ride through those sort of puddles? Unless you are playing the game ‘Puddle? or Pothole?’ - so satisfying when guessed right, but ‘Ahhhhgggghhh’ when, all too often, got wrong.
