The Helmet Catch finally gets a deep rewind | Super Bowl XLII Giants vs. Patriots

I love an underdog story. Who doesn’t? It’s not fun to root for winners, there’s no suspense, there’s no drama, there’s no quiet feeling in the back of your mind that “hey, if these guys can win, then maybe someday I can overcome my many many obstacles! Or at least one of ‘em!”
And in Super Bowl XLII, Eli Manning and the Giants were just about the saddest underdog at the pound. After years of early playoff exits and the demoralizing start of the 2007 season, they cindarella’ed their way to the big game. Only to have to play the Tom Brady and the Patriots, who, by the way, had not lost all season. Brady was bolstered by Randy Moss and Wes Welker. Nobody else had a chance.
But an improbable, acrobatic, 4th quarter catch in the final drive of the Super Bowl was the Patriots undoing. And who made the catch? David Tyree, an underdog himself! A special teams player who forced people to respect him as a wide out.
I’d call this the ultimate David v Goliath story, but it doesn’t quite work because the team that represents David is the New York Giants. Totally ruins the metaphor. But still, all in all, this game is a historic underdog tale, worthy of a deep rewind.

@@rogerpope9948 much like Ryan Tannehill is all the sudden a good QB without Adam Gase, Eli was clutch because he was handed the two minute drill and Kevin Gilbride was no longer calling plays at that point. Everytime that happened Eli flew. Gilbride had the most vanilla offense ever with his aggressively consistent first down off tackle run play. Eli in his prime was great as evidence by the fact that every time he was given play calling ability the Giants O marched. They don't win any Super Bowls without him. Period.

He got it together in the game itself. He caught three passes. The first was nothing special, but then near the beginning of the fourth quarter he caught a touchdown pass. There are a lot of life lessons to take out of this season. Disclaimer-Im a Giant fan, and this run was the best thing Ive ever seen one of my teams do, easy. So I had a front row seat, I can remember every game all year. Nobody thought, but for the team itself and the diehards, that they would ever get past Dallas, I can tell you that. And then what happened in Green Bay, to this...absolutely monumental. With the ability of hindsight, it was the doubt going into the season, the losses, the 4INT game against the Vikings, the 38-35 loss week 17; it was the adversity the team overcame to do this that blows me away and really motivates me in my life to this day.

Surprised that you didn't talk about their Week 17 Matchup that year, I think it definitely adds to the lore. Giants didn't have to beat NE but they tried their hardest to give them their first loss. Five weeks later they would get the job done.
@QwertyCaesar

I remember that the NFL and their partner networks scrambled to get that game broadcasted on basic cable because it was originally only on the NFL network. Was on NBC IIRC, though that could be wrong. Anyways nobody expected it to be much of a game and a lot of folks figured "why bother" for getting the game to air for everybody but they tuned in anyways "just to see history" and then that game went down to the final two minutes. Wasn't the closest regular season game the Pats had that year, that goes to the Baltimore Ravens, but it was damn close.

I don't know if it's too soon to request or not, but a rewinder of Brayden Point's 5OT game winner would be a pretty cool video to do a rewinder on. I know it was only a first round playoff series, but the fact that the first game in the long awaited rematch between the Blue Jackets and Lightning went to a 5th overtime was the shot in the arm the Lightning needed to make the deep playoff push that they're currently on. Just a year prior, they had one of the best regular seasons ever seen in the NHL, and then they got IMMEDIATELY swept by the Blue Jackets. The context and history is there for a pretty good episode of rewinder

Thanks for the memories. I do want to point out something. On the play that Samuel missed the int, Steve Smith ran a hot route when he was not supposed to. The Giants were running a 4 down base with Jacobs scanning which means they had enough blockers to pick up the pass rush. Eli was upset at Steve Smith and not Tyree. Once again thanks so much posting this. Hard to believe it's been over 12 years.

Speaking of underdog stories, I would love to see a rewind of Aleksandr Karelin's loss to Rulon Gardner in the 2000 Olympics Gold Medal Wrestling match. Coming into that match, Karelin's only competitive loss was in the 1987 USSR Wrestling Championships. Karelin had already announced he would retire following the 2000 Olympics, and if he got this one last win, he would retire undefeated in international competition, having won 3 Olympics (soon to be 4), 9 World Championships, and 12 European Championships, and having never lost a single competitive international wrestling match going back to his debut 1987. Rulon Gardner was unheard of coming into the 2000 Olympics. It was one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports.
