I really liked when V and Takemura started talking about the cat. It made me realize "oh yeah I've never seen an animal while playing" and it made the moments where you see animals in the story impactful for me

I got some good news for you then, there’s about 2 pet-able cats in the prologue of the game near viktors clinic, you can also adopt a cat in the game called ‘Nibbles’ it’s near the mega building for V’s apartment, take a left when leaving and there is a bowl on the ground, you gotta find cat food, leave it go to sleep in your apartment and come back later for a surprise 😎

@@sandevastated1 Honestly, maybe I'm looking too much into it, but I took that pet-able cats as literally the bad omen for V. Because my reaction was - yey, a cat! And than you get that talk with Takemura and suddenly your miraculously found cat is more ominous than it was before. It added a metaphysical theme - like "oh, noes, I've been seeing cats all this time, even in the prologue"!

Because I went with the nomad origin (objectively the best life path), I actually got a look at that earlier. The whole plot of it is you're smuggling something into night's city, you are chased, having to bribe guards, all this stuff. So naturally, both V and Jackie want to have a look at what they are risking their lives on, only to open it up and find ...a lizard. A normal, lizard, put into hibernation in a cold case. While the player might chuckle at this, both Jackie and V are amazed at this creature, petting it, staring at it, like they have never seen an animal like this before. Because they haven't. There's also a nice little bit of natural dialogue, where Jackie admits he always wanted a pet, joking they should keep it for themselves, only for V to remind him that the corpo they are smuggling this for would happily kill them for that.

Cyberpunk does a lot of things well that it didnt get credit for. The fact you can call jackie and leave messages to him about life after his funeral is such a small but important touch that does a ton of work humanizing V.

oh god, i remember that i almost started crying when i discovered it's possible to leave a message to Jackie, just shows how well the story is written so we miss characters who we only interacted with for few hours of the game...

Despite Cyberpunk's many shortcomings in the gameplay, I loved the game. The world was incredible, the music was phenomenal, the acting, script, and characters were all so good. I'm so excited to play it again in a year or two when the game is truly finished.

I think people railed on Keanu Reeves acting too much too. The moment in the oilfields where he was looking for something and just was let down really hit hard. Keanu did a good job in the scenes that needed emotion. Most of it he was your likable douchebag companion who sometimes went against your interests. Like just cause it was all the rage to hate on Cyberpunk they hated on every aspect of the game even those that deserved respect. Like for example every cutscene is seamless and interactable. Never felt like you were just watching the game. Traditional cutscenes player loose all control and you just watch. But in Cyberpunk some choices lead to cutscenes. Like for example the Arasaka soldier holding a hostage in the downed AV. You can complete the entire dialogue with him or you can just shoot him and end the dialogue. In TW3 the camera cuts to the character talking every time so all you can do is make decisions based on what dialogue options you have. It was like a mixture of a COD campaign in moments with an RPG. Interesting concept that's never been combined before. Like COD some cinematic events ruin the immersion. But you got to give it to them that they tried something completely different than TW3 in that aspect. Some options were only given if you look at certain objects like a gun on the table or a character that's off to your left. I thought it was an interesting design change that worked in a lot of ways.

My argument for the Warning about sharks is that Pacifica was designed to be a new hot spot in the 40's, but was abandoned in 2070. Essentially, anything that was there at that time is still there, including old ads for defunct brands and commercials almost a decade out of date. This to me is actually MORE world building because it reinforces the "lost to time" energy that Pacifica represents.

Even if you're not right, that shark bit adds a lot of realism. The example of an information told to everyone, even though they know it is how, in the London metro, they keep saying “see it, say it, sorted”. Everyone knows that they should report suspicious activity, but it still goes on and on.

Not even just that, it's also partially a subtle hint that the average persons education has declined so much that, even well before 2060, there needs to be automated announcements like this to inform people. To inform them of what we would, today, consider common knowledge or even relatively recent news. There are plenty of things we know today from just a passing mention on the news cycle 17 years ago. Where as in Cyberpunk, people are too caught up in whatever they're doing to care or are too busy trying to scrape by to notice. The same could be said about the issue he took with the NPC's in the waiting room. One doesn't want to be bothered with dealing with their mentally ill family member, displaying a lack of what we would consider basic understanding of mental illness and the empathy that intrinsically comes with that understanding. He doesn't know or care because that's how the world, more specifically the megacorperations, of cyberpunk have conditioned people to be. Where as the other is the typical cynical opposition to the former, whom only realistically believes they know the truth. But similarly has the same lack of understanding and empathy for mentally ill people, even those they ought to care about. It's a display of megacorperations using narrative framing to always have the people more interested in arguing with one another than to actually do anything meaningful to change the status quo. By 2077 it's no secret that the Megacorps that predominantly rule the world are awful and treat the masses poorly. The largest of them have literally had four, very public, world spanning wars by 2077. They no longer need to hide their agenda's, they can do almost anything they like without repercussions or it affecting their profit margins. They are the only source of almost everything the masses want and need, so they don't need to do anything more than ensure that the masses lack the education and will to unite against them. What better way than to ensure the education system is fully privatised and that numerous media sources distribute information that will pit people against one another by catering to particular demographics that even hate the corporations themselves. After all, it's better & cheaper to control what is being discussed by people predisposed to hate your corporation than to attempt to cover up every misdeed. Tell them what misdeeds are to be discussed and tell their opposition that you were in the right. Telling people what they what to hear through tailor made media sources pushes both sides of the masses to argue with each other rather than oppose your corperation. It feels heavy handed, hamfisted and unmotivated to us. However, to someone from that world it would be a typical argument between two people with different perspectives fed to them from different media sources. It's actually quite amusing how it illustrates how bad corpertised media narrative framing could become if left unchecked. In the real world we can already see the beginnings of this occurring right now. If general education levels were to plummet and monopolies be allowed to run amok then this will be our future. It's honestly hilariously depressing really.

can i add that i think it may be a joke? considering shark attacks are exceedingly rare as is now, and how out of place it actually feels even in universe, I feel like the devs added it as some joke that kind of went over everyone's head, mostly because its not that funny.

What it was was a hot mess. I liked it *despite* the monumental shortcomings. It really wasn't a good game at all (a big problem that piece by piece got mitigated by the patches, so kudos to the devs), but the worldbuilding drew me in and made me... not accept, but somehow tolerate the fatal flaws of the game. Outstanding worldbuilding, some great characters - since everything else was sub-par at best, downright horrible at worst, it goes to show how far good worldbuilding can take you. Even through what's otherwise a &#@§ show like this.

What it was is a pretty nice looking city that i would really would like to see in a better game. Because besides the setting... playing it felt like playing a very rudimentary MMO but solo. Aside from some setpiece missions like the Arasaka tower and the Judy dive. It was mostly. "NPC tells you to go kill/steal the questitem/person (x times) at location Y" 120 times over. And as a reward you get a Colorcoded Legendary Unique Lvl 13 shirt that a Defense score of 420 while the Lvl 9 bulletproof vest has only 244. So you throw it into the trunk with the other 200 Unique Legendary Super Awesome Shirts that have more stopping power than a Tank. Even the (usually liked) Delamain mission are just more of the same. Drive to X, wait for "witty dialogue" to be expositioned to you and then drive to the next one to repeat. They just happen to have some moderately funny jokes/situations that happenend to an AI.

Not only that, the amount of thought put into designing even the littlest things to flesh out their world always caught me by surprise. Like how they use ads for lighting and speedbumps? Which are pretty genius since they stick out on the road. The designers of the game did their homework.

I actually never encountered any super duper game-breaking bugs when playing the game. Never tried to get a refund because it played like intended. Feel like I'm one of those lucky people who never experienced a bug and/or never noticed it when it did happen :)

@@druxusthemage9806 Same boat, my pc is midrange and I only had one crash in about 40hrs of gameplay. Saw a few glitches but none during super important moments so I got really immersed when it mattered most thankfully

There's another stipulation to this rule: The character *receiving* the exposition must also have a *need to know* that information. With the exception of the eccentric personality type that talks about anything and everything that interests them regardless of context, it will also feel forced if the information helps that character in no way at all. A nuclear physicist explaining how nuclear reactors work to a general in charge of containing a nuclear meltdown makes sense because the general needs to understand this in order to form an appropriate plan

I love this game to death. It’s such an immersive story with great written characters, 7 different endings, great voice acting and endless possibilities for gameplay. Additionally I’ve never seen such a beautiful city in most video games. It was generally a game that gives you an empty feeling once finishing. I also like the dystopian world surrounding it. When you realise that every heist crew member dies, it hits you pretty hard. This ain’t a game where the main character wins. It’s like Alt Cunningham says. ‘You think you have cheated death, when in fact death has cheated you.’

@@aidancocking4014 roads are a mixed bag imo, like on smaller roads and stuff there seems to be an appropriate amount of cars but the facts that there isn’t hundreds of cars going a snails pace on the freeway in a large city in California is funny to think about. There’s also the fact that there’s only like two parking spaces in downtown is kinda annoying. I know a bunch of moneybags just fly now but the fact that there’s no parking space next to my downtown apartment kind of sucks.

I also put horizon zero dawn on a pedestal in terms of great mystery writing. Because even i as a writer was wracking my brain as to what zero dawn could be that made the "cure worse than the disease" and got such a reaction out of ted faro the whole game. The fact that they could write a story about fucking robot dinosaurs and have a fantastic twist that even the theory mill can't see coming is an amazing feat of writing

I had to know what zero dawn was, what happened to old America and old future humans And when I found out I was like holy shit these humans that got wiped out weren't that far off from us now, then had a mini existential crisis thinking of us making these robots that use organics as fuel and ourselves being wiped out having to make our own Zero Dawn Only for some red head out cast to save her world we re seeded from the machines we made that unmade us.

Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the few stories that legitimately made me feel existential terror. I think I seriously contemplated what it would mean to die for the very first time after getting to the heart of the game's mystery, and I had to force myself to stop thinking about it because it legitimately scared me.

If only because anyone with an inkling of exposure to present-day pop culture could've seen the disaster that Ted Faro was engineering a mile away. Getting to the heart of the game's mystery is less about discovering what he did and more about piecing together the evidence you've already seen and deducing what he did before the game confirms your suspicions. That existential dread you feel digging to the heart of the game's mystery is the growing realization that you have more capacity for foresight than he did.

Another thing i notice how genius the game is, was in dialogues. At some point V was explaining to Judy how the relic chip works and you can look at Judy's face that she was actually figuring out how fkd up V situation was without saying a single world. I saw folks saying that the dialogues are boring, and indeed, sometimes it looks like that because the dialogues were very realistic, you just don't get the information you get the emotions and motivations of the characters you were speaking. We as players already know all that information, but Judy didn't know, even V doesn't fully comprehend how exactly the relic chip works. That whole conversation wasn't about the player, is about Judy. If you don't pay attention to this moment, it would look like boring exposition, but is the opposite, is the game being immersive as it could get, by showing that Judy is really smart and is trying to understand the whole picture of what was going on. It is brilliant.

I did spend almost 300 hours in Night City, and look forward to do it again in a year or so. And the reason for that is obviously the flawless worldbuilding, storytelling (so many chef kiss side quests and the main storyline is top notch, too) and the characters you meet throughout the playthrough.

I mainly played the main missions, and very few side quest. Are they good? Good as witcher 3? Did not finish(got pretty far thou), but tbh Main mission was not my fav, but mostly because it felt like on rails stuff. Maybe i should have done more side stuff too. I kinda wished for a varied amount of gigs in larger environment and stuff, but most side stuff i did was small kill this npc in the parking lot stuff. I wish the gig we did with with jackie in that cinematic near the beginning was a large playable part of the game to be honest.

@@Kevlord22 Imho not exactly Witcher 3 level, but close. Well worth playing, for sure. Plus, there is a live gig with you on the guitar in one side questline (not gonna spoil it for you). It's not very long, but memorable ;) The sidequests really add to the arc of the sidechars making you feel much more attached to them. I am not only talking the romances here (all of them are great, btw). And, thinking about it, some of the sidequests are absolutely on witcher 3 lvl. "The Hunt" for example, an excellent psycho nightmare story, or "Sinnerman" come to mind.

You know, I kinda like the "No need to be afraid of sharks" line. It conveys not as much information about sharks being extinct, but serves as yet another prism of corporate perception of things. By this message they are trying to encourage people to go swimming, spend some eddies and feel happy about it, because there's no need to be afraid of anything. They don't see the morbid nihilism of this message. They are not really people. It's a great line, in my opinion.

Glad to see a positive take on Cyberpunk on RU-vid for once. As a very casual player, I had absolutely no clue that this game was in making for so many years prior and thus wasn't exposed to any hype until December 2020. Hell, I haven't even played The Witcher 3. When I found there's a Google Stadia launching in my country that supports this game, I thought I'd give it a shot over the Christmas holidays. I was completely immersed. Yes, I could see some shortcomings and imperfections in gaming mechanics, like the annoying cadence of serving the side quests or a bunch of useless skills in a skill tree. But gosh, the atmosphere of the place, the music, the actual acting and dialogues, the lore of the world... There were many occasions I had goosebumps just following often profoundly deeply sad stories of some of the characters. Say what you want, but if a game can consume you to the point you actually don't want to leave its world and you care about characters, that's what is art in its finest for me.

The truth is that it wasn't in development for very long, in fact it was very short. They made the first teaser during the Witcher 2 era but only a couple of people were working on the concept of the game. The real development started in 2016 after Witcher 3 was complete which makes it like 4 years which is not a long time for a game this size. GTA 6 is in development longer than 4 years and it's still in pretty early stage. They shouldn't have given such a quick release date, instead of delaying it just not say it's being released in April 2020. Maybe they wanted to release it in 2020 as a homage to original Cyberpunk 2020 or maybe they thought that they are going to fix those technical issues quickly because the core of the game was finished. Witcher 3 was released very buggy and people didn't mind as much but it wasn't such a huge release. Overhyping was the biggest problem, people expected their perfect game and everyone had a different vision. Some people expected a hardcore RPG and others wanted a futuristic GTA. No matter how good the final product would be one of those people would be dissapointed.

@liamsteam walsh I hear what you say about the illusion of control, but Illusion of control can actually be a pretty powerful tool and in my opinion, they did a fine job with it. Not to mention that you are definitely in control yourself at some points. But yeah, I understand that's not what was promised and it will always remain disappointing for many people. I do believe CDPR has some of the most talented writers and narrative designers of our time, and I also believe that its executive board doesn"t give those wonderful people half the time and human resources they would need to make their talent shine 100%.

@liamsteam walsh I kind of disagree with your view on the main story arc and the general lore. Probably because CP77 is what made me want to try out the TTRPG version. Had it been the other way around, I might have been disappointed (not sure though). Now concerning the story, I have to say that never in my life have I seen a story handle the themes of death and bereavement with such brutal realism and lucidity. For example, many people have been complaining about that one very important character (spoiler alert) who dies prematurely and how the writer just made him up so he could be a supporting character while V still needed him, and then killed him off when they didn't need him anymore.... Well, that simply isn't true, as later on the developers did go on and devote an entire, several hours long mission to the consequences of that guys' death and the impact it had on those who remained. That "ofrenda" scene that you can choose to go to (but you actually have a choice to ignore it as well) moves me everytime, in a deep and emotional way. I had to wonder how and why I would systematically feel devastated by this ofrenda, even though I have played this scene times and times again over the course of several playthrough. It finally occurred to me that that moment was not about storytelling. Rather, it was about what can you do when someone you love is brutally taken away from you : absolutely nothing. That's where CP77's brilliant writing really shines in my opinion : the story is not really (but still a little bit) about how you can or cannot survive the relic ; it's not about you really having any choice at all. Rather, it is about HOW YOU WISH TO BE REMEMBERED once you're gone. This theme can be found everywhere in the story : when DeShawn asks you "quiet life, or blaze of glory, hm?". When Johnny plays badboy and gives the finger to the entire world but really, all that matters in the end is that Rogue can look into his eyes one last time and see him. When you get to decide how you're going to remember your friends. Even in small, secondary quests like that Sinnerman/They won't go when I go mission, where you get to witness the sanctification and crucifixion of a guy who wanted the world to forgive the criminal he was and aknowledge that weird cyber-messiah he was trying to become (that quest seriously shook me to my core). That theme also comes up with Judy and Evelyn, Panam and Scorpion and Saul, etc. In the end, it's all about how that city devours you and how you need to stand out, use what little time you have left on this world to bomb a megacorporation, open your heart to your loved ones, cleanse your soul at the hand of a buddhist monk, or simply enjoy ultracapitalism to the fullest of its potential (Lynx Paws, Hard Knuckles, Mantis Blades, Kerenzikov, Sandevistan, you name it) right before the lights go out, because one way or another they will.

I truly enjoyed my time on Cyberpunk, the world and the landscapes are probably one of the bests i´ve ever seen on any video game, is truly sad that it came out the way it did, is truly unique on the way that other disastrous releases are caused by companies just making souless cash grabing games, but Cyberpunk 2077 could have been a masterpiece it just needed a couple more years to get polished...

@@neonpoison3201, start of the game, the montage, everyone was t posing, v had no head, but it fixed it self in the next scene, right after I woke up with Johnny, he had no limbs, head was inverted into his body, and he was half naked, only with a thin pair of underwear, I don’t know about you, but I consider that pretty weird lmao, besides that, I have a good computer, and I’ve never encountered anything else, maybe the ai being shite, but that’s more or less the developers hand, not the game breaking.

The gold standard that's guided my exposition writing has been The Matrix, and I'm gratified to see the lessons I took from it line up here. When explaining the state of the (real) world, Morpheus sits Neo down and just gives him a 5 minute monologue of exposition. It's one of the most riveting scenes in the movie. Besides being motivated exposition, I realized the scene only works because the audience's goal is aligned with the protagonist's (learn more about the Matrix). It's important to keep in mind the audience's goal, to play toward or against it, for any scene and not just exposition.

8:39 A way to resolve this is to attach the exposition to an emotion. Make the characters two friends and make the exposition part of a traumatic experience. The male character asks about how it is with the other's relative, who underwent the psychiatric treatment. The female character argues that it is disgusting how they treated her mother. And she says that, in hindsight, maybe they should have delivered her from her misery. Use the exposition to tell something about the character's past or present state of being.

Cyberpunk tells it's story very well, it left me speechless the first time I beat it, then it amazed me even more when I played it a second time after the DLC's release and they knocked it out of the park with the story-writing. There is so much foreshadowing leading up to the heist and really shows just how naive everyone involved with heist is, Jackie & V are clouded with delusions of grandeur, Evelyn thought she could act as a fixer and turn a quick buck, T-Bug & Dex both zeroed. The heist ended in nothing but tragedy.

Actually there is one exception to the “if both characters know don’t talk about it”: have two experts argue a contentious point and have them found their argumentation by referring the other to fundamental knowledge. For example have two physicists argue over the nature of light with A positing it must be a particle and B claiming it’s a wave. (I know, it’s both…it’s for the sake of illustration)

What I fell in love with in Cyberpunk was definitely the level of immersion in this game. Besides all the bugs and flaws; no matter where you look there is always a story to find. The buildings, details in general and overall the delivery of the world gives one of THE BEST fantasy world to fully immerse oneself into where one is eager to explore no matter what your goal is.

I like how you seem totally blindsided by this, because it’s true. It’s a hugely important part of storytelling but it’s one that’s so easily forgotten when you’re in the middle of trying to deliver a story. The art of knowing when to trust your audience, so that 1) their intelligence not insulted and 2) you allow them to interpret information in interesting ways that mean more to them personally.

In every Harry Potter book there is a section at the end where Dumbledore sits Harry down and explains almost everything that happened throughout the book, yet it’s so captivating each time because the mysteries in Harry Potter are always so interesting and the reader has been working towards it throughout the book.

I really enjoyed the story/stories of Cyberpunk 2077, the characters and how world building was handled. However, a large part of that immersion vanishes the moment you go outside the narrative of the main story or side missions and start exploring Night City and interacting with the NPCs.

Cyberpunk is the only game I accept playing in first person, just because the storytelling and worldbuilding is THAT good. At first I wanted to download a third person mod (and I still might do it) but I’m so glad I played it through in first person, the way it was intended. I still remember running up to my boyfriend after some scenes and urging him to finally play that game, so I can rage with him about it 😂❤️

@@TheCloserLook you must be happy that wasn’t the case at all right 😁 the 1.5 release got me to finally pick this up and i’m loving it but hey i have a Q about your chosen example of bad exposition i’m hoping you’ll see... wasn’t that guy in the hospital clearly referring explicitly to people who’d gone ‘cyberpsycho’ and not just to anyone who’s sick/in need of the hospital? yaknow cyberpsychos, that hot-button issue in the game’s world essentially turning a tiny % of the population into crazed serial murderers whose condition may or may not even be possible to reverse and many of whom are so dangerous that (according to your NCPD fixer regina) even the police are too scared to go after them? and if so, wouldn’t it make perfect sense for random people to be talking about that and voicing those exact sorts of opinions and just generally clashing over the issue? i mean no one really knows how to handle it, there’s no easy answer, and it’s such a big deal within the world that it’s literally part of the main intro with night city news covering new cyber psychos popping up and killing ppl... so wouldn’t it be weird if there WEREN’T some ppl saying that exact sort of thing? fkn love this video tho lmao i have so much appreciation for your unique execution, new sub for sure

I was bad at maths, until I got a Prof, who deductively made us learn the formulas. Than for 2 years i was good at it. When she left, and was replaced... I again sucked at it... because we weren't lead onto the formulas. The Formula was given, and than exercise on it... yeah.. wasn't fun, cause you had nothing to figure out. For example, the good prof, made us find the relationship described in Pythagoras Theorem, hinting us on the way, nudging us towards the formula. The other one, just gave us formulas, with no context...

In the part about the aliens and the black death, you could also infer that they too have experienced a major disease outbreak and felt guilty for judging humans as they did. That's what I immediately assumed, partly because of the Subnautica music that was playing, and also because it sounded like they arrived after the disease hit.

- Honestly, if I heard that shark extinction thing in a videogame, I'd assume I was about to be attacked by a giant shark. A giant mutant shark. With lasers attached to its head. - The immediate answer I came up with to your "subtext" question was "Because it allows you to convey a massive amount of information in a short amount of time." - If I had to come up with the ur-example of bad exposition in an otherwise very good piece of media, it would be the "Mage's College" quest in Skyrim. For almost half an hour, if you don't "click through" dialogue, in this game about saving the world from a giant dragon God, fighting evil monsters, learning amazing powers etc, your time is completely spent following NPCs around at walking pace, listening to them spout nonsense that the game hasn't given you a reason to care about, 95% of which won't be useful. And this continues right through the questline. It breaks all four rules (including rule 1, because almost nothing that happens to the protagonist character happens to anybody else at the college, and a lot of it makes no sense within the world. Why exactly is one of the teachers at the college acting as a gate guard? This is not "motivated exposition".)

One thing you may want to talk about- why Cyberpunk is much better than HZD and why Game of Thrones had such a strong start- is intrigue. In-universe intrigue is pretty much mandatory for modern entertainment. It rewards people who recognize subtext and characterization, because it shows the secret knowledge needed to predict otherwise unknowable actions. Cyberpunk is absolutely packed with such moments, practically daring people to pick up the tabletop game and investigate in-game mysteries, like how many people Joanne Koch had to kill to cover up her company massacring dozens of people.

The execution of most narrative pieces in CP2077 is almost flawless. You can still notice there is some content missing and some parts of the story feel rushed, especially in the final third of the campaign, but there lies the bones for an outstanding game, upon which CDPR MUST build a better game with the expansions. The character dialog, the exposition, the huge amount of personality in so many characters... not to mention the flawlessly written sidequests (for example River Ward's and Peralez's). The game is really good. Unfortunately, it should have been be released this december, not last year's december.

There's actually a book you can read in the game, that explains that ''in the early 21st century, corporations could determine how their employees dress, what piercings they can have and after cybernetic implants have become norm for the masses, corporations could make their workers to have specific implants to work. Some of them are enhancers, some are cosmetic. Bodyguards may be required to subject full-cyborgisation. A reason why Panam doesn't seem to have any Cyberware that catches the eye is the fact that she didn't serve in the army like Mitch and Scorpion did.

CDPR really knows how to build a world. It helps they used established franchises, but they really bring them to life. From the occasional ambient sound of a police siren helping the world feel alive, or sailors yelling in Novigrad, to hearing people say to take the lillies down in the first pub highlighting that it's an invaded land, to the changes in white orchard after the first section (or going back past Tomira's house and seeing it burned down by Radovid's men...) It's one of the things I really loved about Cyberpunk. It had a lot of flaws, but god damn the world was good. Its gameplay was similarly subtle too. For instance, River will say "I'll go in if I hear shots" instead of saying "do you want me to go in, or not" as he's a cop, and can't go in. You want him to go in, he's told you when he'll do it. So just fire some shots. Or for instance the chip for the spiderbot transaction is *clearly* dodgy. You can take from that that it's dodgy, inspect it, and find that out... without a dialogue option to hamfist it in. (Although you get the option as a Corpo, as it fits.) Can still do it, it's still set up. But feels so much better.

It is pretty interesting if you do a 2nd play because you pick up the world building/exposition and foreshadowing. Like you see Panam drunk and alone in Afterlife before you meet her, which also explains her character state when you meet her, you see that Johnny been manipulated from that start because he was specifically picked for the construct by Yorinobu for his hate of Arasaka and to break the Corp stalemate, you have so much foreshadowing too in prologue. Dexter shooting you is foreshadowed, the first mission you do with Jackie as Nomad foreshadows what happens with Arasaka job, and you see in the heist environment finds that Honoka knew what happened on the night and Saburo wanted to nuke Night City. You also learn about the prototype brainwashing program Night Corp run for the Peralezs from world building

If you check out the Peralez computer you’ll see foreshadowing off them being brainwashed, and Mrs Peralez being in on it. Also a minor cool detail that Judy refers you to them as ‘A reliable merc, from the afterlife’. In the beginning soul killer is also foreshadowed as when you play as Johnny it says ‘soul killer initialised’ and the female Arasaka agent saying ‘but there are worse fates than death’

I also think Fallout 4 did a great job at showing, not telling. Often times it´ll gave you a whole picture of catastrophe (an area or such) and maybe a bit of text (billboards or such) and you, the player then puts it together and the picture you get is fascinating and terrifying at once. Using your brain to put it all together is just so much fun and boosts the playing experience even more. Combined with incredible, strong and emotional music you experience this post-apocalyptic world as if you were actually in it, as if you would feel it. Playing through Fallout 4 I had goose bumps more often than I´d like to admit.

The game has alot of tones of the Great Gatsby. Everybody who is involved in the heist dies in some way. Everybody who was not true to their real self fails. While the people who knew their place in Night City survived and have a happy ending. Hanko is great example when you meet her she tells you this straight up she knows here place as the Heart of Arasaka and she accepts her place there unlike V. I could write a whole easy about the Cyberpunk 2077 story. Its just so full of details you only realized on your second playthrough.

Ironically, you missed the subtext about the tannoy announcement. That tannoy is in Pacifica, a region of the city that has been abandoned by the corporations, government and city infrastructure for years. The announcement would’ve been relevant when it was recorded, but after Pacifica was abandoned it was never changed.

Honestly Konpeki Plaza blew me away, the architecture alone was amazing, how the central hallway leads to a wall, which takes the path and shifts it upward into an impossible gateway into a landscape of grass and clouds that stretches all the way up. This hotel is a threshold, for Jackie and I both, the biggest, promised step into the major leagues, to a paradise beyond the places we were born, and just the same way the heist goes, he walk past the golden hosts, down the path to the azure gateway, only to turn away as it stretches up and out of our reach. We touched the clouds, only to end up falling so far. Cyberpunk is an incredible game. Everyone can have their opinion, but the truth is that Cyberpunk has a variety of subtlety it uses for so so much worldbuilding and story. Just because the obvious ones are obvious, it doesn't exclude the subtle ones you may miss, like the golden hosts, like the blue gate of Konpeki Plaza, like V pointing out that Jackie listened to him about modding his bike when he visits his garage, or the messages plastered on the walls of Valentino controlled turf after the heist that lament Jackie getting involved in the affairs of shady fools like V and Dex, written in a language they know but few others would. Night City is such an amazing and awful place, in an incredible, if also flawed game. A masterpiece dosent have to be perfect, it can just be a mirror, even if it's chipped and warped.

About "Show don't tell", I don't remember which YT channel it was, but they recommended, if you need to convey a result: tell it. If you need to convey feelings, emotions, impacts: show it. Of course that's a rule of thumb, but I just thought it summarizes the guide lines pretty well.

i never knew how to explain it but that’s exactly what i loved about cyberpunk. i also kinda feel like i as a player am not V. i mean i controll V and hit all the choices but V just feels so real and incorporated in this world. almost like we are just watching trough his/her eyes. very cool

Hideo Kojima is the grand master of bad exposition. My God does the man *lecture*! Playing a Kojima game and trying to absorb the worldbuilding is like studying for finals. I really love all the Metal Gears and Death Stranding, but they don't work as a coherent story due to the constant info dumps.

My best take on the exposition is the slang. No one explains what “choom” or “gonk” means or what “Eddies” are but because of the natural flow of conversation and context you naturally understand the gist of it

Sitting alone in the dark at night and playing this game really was a phenomenal experience. The atmosphere, characters, story and sound design really did over shadow any glitches.

Its really not suprising. CDPR are honestly imo the best writers in the industry when it comes to characters and world building through said characters. There really is no equal in that regard. Look at W3. Exceptional characters legendary really.

I did, I felt like it was too much about Johnny vendetta against Arasaka. That should've been DLC. The environmental story telling was cool, but, it left so much to be desired. Ex, The Black Panther movie teases a bunch of culture in Wakanda, but, we really only learn that it's a advanced tech nation because of a magic stone and there was a war, a long time ago, because of it. In CP77, you get teased a corpo war, but, they just "TELL" us it's happening without showing us. And I think there's one mission based on it--where you find out a gang is gathering resources for the opposing corp to frame them for a crime.

One of my favorite running jokes in Children's Hospital is when the characters break the flow of dialogue to remind the audience that "this hospital is located in brazil, as we all know, fully staffed by and in service of ex-patriot americans" despite it having no bearing on the story and making no sense as an added detail

The reason I loved Fingers character so much while everyone hated him is because it made so much sense for him to exist in a world like that. He wasn't the bad guy everyone made him out to be. He was twisted, he was nasty and repulsive, and he valued other people's body only for what he could get from them - yet he saw nothing wrong with it since his services were very on demand by likeminded people surrounding him. The only real difference was that he proudly displayed his twistedness, he didn't want to deny who he was. When he told V that he never did anything to Evelyn the same way Woodman did I instantly believed him. There were plenty of people who treated others worse than he did but he was just such a perfect embodiment of their society people couldn't stand to look at him.

The best exposition in history of cinema is the school bus scene from Donnie Darko. You learn everything about the characters and the dynamic between them within 90 seconds without a dialog. Brilliant!

One other example of good exposition in the game I think could be the quest Pyramid Song. In reality it's just Judy talking about her backstory and dumping information on the player, yet the quest is regarded as one of the best from the game. It combines mystery, anticipation, exploration and builds players trust with Judy since she shows you who she really is and V also does a little bit. Combined with great soundtrack and a change of environment I think that quest was really well done, even if it really was all exposition and contained no gameplay at all.

Exactly why I love this game so much: It shows much worthless our lives really are. The big corpos and few billionairs have all the power and are good to go with everything they want to do. - Whilst a normal person is judged and charged - maybe even imprissoned - for parking their car wrong once... Every "normal" person just living along their daily live to just be able to stay alive - afford food, rent and that's it. While the rich are getting richer on exactly this expanse. Literally Imperialism...

I still open CP 2077 just to drive around Night City. There are a lot of open worlds but none of them feel as vertical and alive as it does. It's a great achievement.

Also, the thing about subtext, you have to make the audience think. Because when you make them think and try to work for it, then they actually take that into account. It’s theorised that Yoda spoke the way he did for this very reason, to make people think about what he’s actually saying to understand him, thus making them think… about what he’s actually saying; being earnestly interested in it.

Another good example from Pokemon Red and Blue (GameBoy): The journals in Cinnabar island mansion telling the player about the creation of Mewtwo. When I was a child I was looking for all the journals and it gave me the creeps learning how they lost control over their own creation

I actually love this game (aside from the broken promises and the lies) and even found some of the glitches immersive ! I mean someone falling to their death in front of you or a car exploding in a city full of mercs is believable if not intended! it is a great world and has potential to be a truly awesome franchise they just need to be honest now great video as always best wishes

I suspect that was not a glitch, just a random event. Unfortunately with the game being full of glitches like cars exploding just randomly or whatever else happened it makes you question why that happened, breaking your immersion.

The dialog in the mental hospital was not as you described, and that is ironically why it was there. Cyberpsychosis is a major plot thread in the game, and the game makes it seem at multiple points that is incurable and only hints that there may be a treatment. So it makes sense that one character would be pointing out that they should just kill those with an incurable disease, and the other character pointing out that the corps have an ulterior motive in "treating" it, money. It is later hinted that members of MaxTac were formerly afflicted with cyberpsychosis and Regina Jones is looking to sign people up for a new treatment type, none of which is known by the player, or the general public when you can witness the interaction.

I just need to say, I love all your videos, but they are genuinely getting better and better. You're growing so well, and yours are some of the videos I drop everything for when they're released. Well done, you. Please keep at it! Also, Horizon is brilliant with its worldbuilding, though I do agree, my favourite characters are the flawed ones, (Erend and Rost specifically) and not Aloy herself (though I do have an affection for her, for sure). But yes, I couldn't let the game alone without going a little mad, just because I wanted to know the story so badly. Granted, it did ask me to suspend my disbelief a little higher than I was willing to, but I was satisfied with the answers nonetheless. One thing that did properly pull me out of the story, however, was when Aloy asked questions and the only answer she got was 'this isn't the time', with no real reason as to why.

The best thing about this game is that the exposition and worldbuilding and themes of the game itself are completely subtextual. They’re subtle, to the point where you only subconsciously recognize it and understand it, but you don’t fully understand it until you actively look deeper into the lore and world of the game itself. It’s something very few games do well, and the only series of games I can say do it similarly well is The Souls Series.
