Dope! Thanks for including your Spotify Playlist! I got my start to the Japanese Indie Rock scene from the FLCL soundtrack The Pillows, and Cornelius by chance seeing them perform on MTV New Year's show years back!

FINALLY someone brings this up. One thing I always tell people when asking about live music in /r/JapanTravel - don't look for bars, look for live houses e.g. 'live house [genre] Tokyo'. The jazz definitely flows strong in Osaka, and I can't wait for this pandemic to be done with so we can go back and enjoy live music and gig photography again. Great work here, hopefully this is a start of an in-depth and long-running coverage of the underground indie music scene in Tokyo and beyond.

Thank you, I love to listen to new bands and attend to concerts at little crowded places and I'm planning a trip to japan with my friends and was looking for venues and a little intro to the underground scene. This was so useful.

I'm visiting Japan for the first time in October and this video is the exact information I've been looking for! I always try and dip into the local music scene whenever I travel but, I guess because of the language barrier, I've found it super difficult to do so with Japan. I hit up your Spotify playlist (thank you for still keeping it updated) whilst in the office and thought I'd check out a few bands but just ended up listening to Beachside Talks for hours. I'll get to all of it though. 😄 Thank you for making this!

I've been a big fan of the indie rock band Hitsujibungaku since early last year, so it was interesting to see them on that playlist and realize they had their beginnings in the subculture you discussed here. I'll certainly be listening to the rest of the playlist! Also, I wonder what effect the runaway success of the late 2022 anime Bocchi the Rock has had on the Japanese underground scene. Tbh I never even knew it was referencing the subculture until you showed some footage from concerts and realized the venues were very similar to the one depicted in the anime. I've heard that the school in K-on became a tourist attraction, and Yuru Camp noticeably increased sales of camping equipment in Japan, so maybe live music venues in Shimokitazawa are enjoying increased ticket sales?
@Bonyari_Boy
@Bonyari_Boy 8 месяцев назад
Yep Hitsujibungaku started down in this world before they rocketed to stardom! There has been increased interest thanks to Bocchi, and the main venue featured in the show (called Shelter IRL) apparently never has trouble selling tickets. But anime fans do mostly seem to be interested in that one spot rather than the rich and storied scene as a whole. On my other channel, I have an interview with THE TOMBOYS who are probably the closest thing to a real life Kessoku Band, although to call them that would do disservice to their sparkling 12+ year career: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XIHORlKysX0.htmlsi=Vv8jGrql5cHzC_n1

I'm so glad I found this video. I've been really into japanese music since i've started learning the language, and I was looking for more music that wasn't just the super popular stuff so your playlist is perfect. I'm already obsessed with two of the artists on this playlist (Kaneko Ayano and Mass of the fermenting Dregs), so I'm sure I'll find more to fall in love with. Thank you!

I will be in Tokyo in July with my two teenage boys. Music and food is pretty much are focus. Any tips from your trip? I'm still looking for an airbnb style house to rent for a family of four, if you know anything. Thanks! @bonyari_boy thanks for making these videos.
