The hidden meaning behind modern Akan funeral rites in Ghana.
Funeral rites forms an integral part with the culture of the Akan people in Ghana. Like myself, if you grew up within the Ashanti region of Ghana, chances are your parents regularly went away on funeral runs during the weekend, leaving you with numerous household chores that had to be completed by their return.
Though I spent most of my childhood wondering why I had to lose my beloved mother on weekends to funerals, I've come to realize that there are very good important reasons for these funeral rites. So in this video, I share with you some of the hidden meaning behind modern Akan funeral rites in Ghana. I say modern as most of the old traditions has been excluded or modified due to several reasons. My name is Mickey....Keep Watching!!!

I am happy you found the video useful. Yes, no one knows what lies ahead after life so I wouldn't doubt our ancestors. Thanks very much for your feedback.

We knew about life after death wayyyy before Europeans came to Africa with their bible. Our life after death is different from their Heaven or Hell theory.

Personally, I think funeral is becoming too time consuming and expensive, especially in Africa and Caribbean. The family is not only grieving, but financially stress. In the old days in Jamaica, in rural communities, funeral was a communal affair. The whole community contributed towards the funeral, but today everything is on the family. Back then when a person died at home, the body was washed and kept in the house until burial, and certain local people would sing for free. Now you have to pay to have a band: to play and sing. Funeral today is a financial stress!

Very true. I even say when someone pass nowadays, we mourn our pockets instead of the dead.

I appreciate how you present your content. Nice work! I think some parts of our funeral process can be avoided, because it's truly a waste of money. I just concluded my mom's funeral, therefore I am talking from experience.

I'm very sorry about your mum. That's very true. Funerals are not cheap (from someone who's buried both parents). I blame the modernisation, as I think if we stuck with what our forefathers and mothers did, it wouldn't be this expensive. Thanks very much for your feedback.
