The Hidden World of Chinese Manufacturing in Ethiopia

Ethiopia's long-held ambition is to one day emerge as a major global manufacturing hub, benefiting from a wave of Chinese offshoring. The East African country's strategic location, abundant labor supply, and welcoming government are all very enticing for cost-conscious Chinese manufacturers.
And while Ethiopia has been more successful than many African countries in attracting Chinese investors, the number of factories that have been established there is still relatively small.
A new documentary that's making the rounds on the international film festival circuit provides fascinating insights into why that’s the case. The film, “Made in Ethiopia,” tells the story of a Chinese-backed industrial park outside of Addis Ababa that’s struggled mightily through the pandemic and later a civil war.
Co-directors/producers Xinyan Yu and Max Duncan, both experienced journalists, join Eric & Cobus to discuss their new film and what it took to produce such a textured, complex story.

China's investment in Africa has fallen to less than 1 billion last year (lowest in 2 decades) and Ethiopia owes China about 14 billion dollars - so enjoy it while it lasts and don't expect any more loans until the monies are paid back (Ethiopia has already defaulted on debt repayments to China)!

You should visit flower farms owned by Netherlands and UK. Women abort due to pesticides and others get chronic respiratory diseases. They don't adhere to minimum wage in kenya and some flower farms have reduced salaries from $100 to $60. They have poisoned our two lakes making the fish toxic hence banning fishing. In addition they offshore their profits to tax havens and report losses in kenya hence 0 taxes paid. Kenya tried to introduce minimum tax and they threatened to leave.

Live and learn - thank you for the info. I had no idea Netherlands and UK have toxic flower farms in africa. I'm 100% certain that there are many more exploitative western companies in africa but we wont get to hear about them.

Thanks for the podcast! Great information! I believe China is the only nation that can teach Ethiopians everything they know how they overcame poverty, hunger etc and through hard work they are where they are! (because they can relate) And if there are Chinese short documentary movies if your friends could translate them to Amharic, it will be great to show it on TV! ❤

I think the Chinese went through repeated long periods of very difficult, horrendous times and worked very hard not to relive those days again. The belief and ability to "eat bitter" sets their willingness to sacrifice at a level quite unattainable by most other peoples. "Hard" days at work are probably nothing compared to the days of famine and survival. What China has attained today is nothing less than a miracle when compared to say, that recent social and economic project called the Great Leap Forward. The older folks will still remember this, I'm sure.

I don't disagree with you that China has overcome an enormous amount to achieve incredible levels of development over the past 50 years. But I think it's important not to single out China. Older people in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Singapore also remember equally painful periods in their histories that were dominated by wars, famine, and survival, much as it was in China, and they too have achieved equally impressive levels of development. Please don't misunderstand me, I am not trying to take anything away from what China has achieved, not at all, just that this is a shared experience for lots of people in this region.

This program should be appreciated for its approach to China in Africa issues. The documentary as described by the two guests is intriguing but not surprising. There are always issues and challenges in an endeavor by two countries but they are always depicted by Western media that China has bad intentions and bullying poorer countries and on and on to the point they are like the boy who cries wolf.

In Ethiopia there is no longer a culture of orderly work, commitment and professionalism, After the savages from the north, the Tigers came and destroyed the entire government structure, followed by the other Oromo except for raising cattle And cows have no understanding, they continued the same course as the tigers to break up the country, I don't know what the Chinese can do, miracles are needed.

Because they see money. They want to get rich. They didn't know so much hard work came first. But everybody is afraid that hard work will not be rewarded. You work 16 hour days. Then Elon screws you and you get fired 3 months before your stock options vest. Remains to be seen. Would the Chinese government prove to be true communists and hold their companies to their promises. Or they allow the capitalists to screw over their employees, and then decamp to another country. It's early yet. We don't know. China does not promise free lunches. They promise hard work. They promise Japan's old co-prosperity thing, but without the annexation. Sounds too good to be true. We will see. On the other hand, China does not demand exclusivity. The west are welcome to join in and have their own projects.
