The High-Tech Attack Aircraft the US Allowed the Enemy to Steal

On the night of March 27, 1999, a bizarre-looking, black-painted airplane known by its call sign Vega-31 and nicknamed 'Something Wicked,' sliced through the Serbian night sky.
Having just delivered its powerful radar-guided payload on strategic targets around Belgrade, Lieutenant Colonel Dale Zelko piloted the Lockheed F-117- the world's first operational stealth aircraft. Designed to be invisible to radar and silent in operation, Zelko flew in what should have been undetectable peace.
Suddenly, the tranquility of the cockpit shattered as the radar warning receiver blared urgently, signaling the approach of two missiles.
As the flames grew and the deafening high-pitched whine of the missiles intensified, Zelko, with his heart in his throat, realized that the impossible had happened. He and his silent airframe had been seen.
On this night, the Lieutenant Colonel and the United States Air Force would come to understand that the enemy, led by an enigmatic commander, possessed something perhaps more crucial than technology: strategy.

There were plenty of ‘unexpected’ noises and objects in parts of the UK in the late 70’s & 80’s that were always suggested by authorities as being UFO’s - but in truth were SR71’s and F117’s - if America was happy to base some nukes somewhere, they were more than happy to send secret aircraft there as well!

You forgot to mention that the reason for the successful targeting and shootdown was because (once again) politicians had meddled with military affairs and the F-117As were restricted to flying a specific route and were not allowed to fly in full "stealth" mode. Attempting to make it appear that he had done something 'extraordinary', the enemy claimed to have been able to detect and target the aircraft using skill, resource, intelligence, etc. and, while it was possible to detect the open payload door, it is only open for a few seconds and once closed the missile would have lost the lock, so that was not the reason. Being forced to continously transmit it's location so as to be visible and fly the exact same route night after night was the reason for the shoot down.

Even worse - the F-117 was supposed to have support from ECM aircraft (EA-6B Prowlers) to jam the Yugoslav radars. The EA-6B mission that night was scrubbed due to bad weather, but the F-117 mission was not cancelled and went ahead unsupported. Plus, the Serbs had many spies in Italy reporting all NATO aircraft takeoffs to Belgrade, and they were also monitoring NATO communications. @@Jess96722 : No. The Foxbat (MiG-25) is 8 years older than the F-15. The U.S. designed the F-15 as a desperate, panicked response to the MiG-25, because they originally believed that the Foxbat was a killer dogfighting machine (like the F-15), as well as a Mach 3 interceptor. It wasn’t until 1976 when a Soviet pilot defected and landed a Foxbat in Japan that the Americans realised their mistake. The 1982 movie “Firefox” was based on America’s scare over the Foxbat 10 years earlier.

Sure, the F-117 was already 20yo tech, but the missiles they used to down it were almost 20 years older. A good reminder to those who think the F-16 will be another 'game changer' in Ukraine vs a modern IAD. BTW: That entire campaign was predicated on dubious claims of _genocide_ ... and while you've probably HEARD about the Chinese Embassy bombing, I doubt you've heard the facts described most objectively: It wasn't _a lone, stray bomb._ We dropped FIVE Mk84, 2,000 lb GPS guided JDAMs on China's Embassy. Even if all 5 bombs had struck a neighboring building, is there any doubt in the massive damaged it'd do? The truck bomb used to attack the US Embassy in Kenya only got NEAR the building with 4,000 lb of TNT. We ALL KNOW our media issues brazen lies to our faces: _Natural immunity doesn't work._ And _it's safe & effective._ (They just changed the very definition of _vaccine_ to accommodate the function of their product, instead of vice-versa.) Despite knowing better than to trust them, many of us still do, about (of all things) claims we have no means of verifying. I even took their claims as being made _in good faith_ myself, when they said there was a genocide, but I at least remembered that I was, even if only tentatively, accepting it [on faith], not evidence. Since then, I've heard numerous people (usually retired officers from the US Military) challenging that narrative, along with many citizens of the belligerent nations. While I'm glad the pilot survived, I hardly lament the downing of an F-117. I wish nations worldwide better ways to defend themselves from the most hostile & aggressive nation the world has seen since WWII.

I do however remember the rumor, and every capable radar facility attempting to find stealth by using low band... but none of them ever did.... because its not true. i have been saying for a while the idea of stealth is just a fad and with advances in ai i dont think it will be around much longer as ai can be coupled with irst to passively detect and track stealth aircraft to guide a missile the only defense against it would be to develop a way to jam the data link to a missile and that might not be possible on large surface launch missiles as the ai could be onboard the missile with no data link needed to guide it you would need an active point defense to defend against it like a 360 degree laser or kinetic weapon
@matovicmmilan

@@paktahn Would the jamming work against the heat seeking missiles launched using an IRST?
@paktahn
@paktahn 21 день назад
@@matovicmmilan if the guidance and track system are built fully into a missile there is no data link to be jammed so in reality the only way to defeat a missile using an ir seeker is to either outright dodge it which is not always doable or to spoof it with flares which is feasible now but in the future i see ai being used to process and identify what to track using cameras of multiple wavelengths and will be able to quickly tell the difference between flares and the actual target making flares useless

0:31 Waaaait just a MINUTE man…The F-117 DID NOT have a RWR!! Where do you do your research dude? It didn’t have a RWR; “to maintain its low observability, the F-117 was not equipped with radar; not only would an active radar be detectable through its emissions, but an inactive radar antenna would also act as a reflector of radar energy.” With stealth technology in its infancy, Skunkworks couldn’t provide such a system while also maintaining optimum stealth. Additionally, with the constraints of radar technology at the time no one could target the F-117. And yes, one was shot down by the Serbians but the sequence of events that led to that are both comical and incredible…

This story is disingenuous (not the channel, just this general story). If the F117 really was as vulnerable as the Serbians and this video makes it sound, then there would be no real reason to continue making stealth aircraft when all you need is a 60 year old vacuum tube radar to find them. This incident was a stroke of luck: the perfect storm of circumstances aided by complacency. If it was as simple as this tale makes it sound, then a lot more stealth bombers and fighters would have been lost to hostile fire over the years.
@EdwardFin
@EdwardFin Месяц назад
Because of this incident, Russians make a sellling point of their S-400 radars FM frequencies. And you just might detect an stealth plane with that. But you also might find birds and clouds. They could propably do better with just another high frequency radar and intelligent signal processing using multiple radar stations. But the intelligent part might be more difficult for russians. Good luck with the sales after ukrainian war 😁
@Gillymonster18
@Gillymonster18 Месяц назад
@@EdwardFin yeah. Stealth coating is optimized to negate high frequency targeting radar (like the kind in a radar guided missile). That doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect low frequency radar, which will still be dispersed according to the physical geometry of the aircraft…so much so that to actually detect something it’s sensitivity would have to be so high as to literally see dust, thin clouds, pollen in the air etc. The only thing that might give away a stealth aircraft is the fact it’s moving several hundred miles an hour. Basically the radar going there is something “over there” and then they literally waste resources chasing clouds or a bird or something. And even if they got within Missile range, their high frequency targeting won’t work.

Every time Zoltan Dani activated the radar, it worked for 20 seconds before relocating to another spot-an incredibly difficult task. Our military was highly skilled and well-trained. The U.S. is a joke for a military superpower with inflated strength-a trailer trash continent with a big military budget.

I assume you are a Serb, so maybe you could tell me a thing that I heard... Is it true that during the bombing campaign, your mobile network was operating normally? There was talks about the fusion of data between the mobile network system/towers (allegedly, Serbs used the mobile network system/towers as early warning systems) Serbian observer core and the Serbian Air Defense... Dunno if that was possible at that time or is true but it would be nice to know if this is what happened, cause even the Yanks wouldn't be that stupid to use same ingress routes night by night so that they could say that nothing can touch them...
