Coach Sandi Nypaver and Coach Sage Canaday of Higher Running talk about ways to access the validity of scientific studies and what it means in terms of bias, the strength of results, methods, and how misleading even peer-reviewed science can be! In the second part of the talk they discuss "Double Threshold" Training and its implications in terms of running performance, lifestyle and injury risk.

Glad I was doing stuff on my laptop today and happened to catch this episode. Really good! I have bachelors and masters degrees in the sciences but haven't worked with research data in a long time and really need a refresher. One thing I've always known is that there's bad research methods out there in the 'published' communities. A great point was brought up about who/what funds research and published papers. Data can be manipulated to make it appear very believable. Sandi is right, most people don't have the background (and I'll say, the interest) to recognize data results that may not make sense or to suspect deceipt in papers. Lack of critical thinking skills (my skills have lapsed a bit!) is a huge problem right now. Thank you!

I am a physician and I am frankly embarrassed with my profession. Not only have we made almost no progress in the PREVENTION of chronic diseases but we continue to allow highly biased studies to be published in the first. place.

Would you all do a segment on overcoming running injuries such as IT band syndrome? Would be an awesome episode for those of us who are trying to get back to running and this time overcoming long time injurys we are having to figure out how to overcome to keep running and training, and eventually achieve our race goals. Thanks! WOuld love an episode about this!

P hacking is a huge problem, particularly with medical and psycological studies. I think the largest way to improve this would be to give equal weight to replicate studies. As a researcher there is essentially no incentive professionally to check others work or confirm their study because it will never get published.

Even though Canovas special block somewhat resembles the Norwegian double threshold model the purpose is very different. Canovas model is all about a big stressor and running with fatigue while the Norwegian model is all about control and not accumulate to much fatigue.

For anyone who doesnt know sci-hub is a great way to get access to scientific studies without the pay wall. It is not technically legal but it also is essential to nearly all researchers
