I am Dr. Sheen Gurrib and I want to play my part in supporting the next generation of empowered women. So, I have a podcast ‘Dream, Girl’, where I host women from all spheres of life with varied experiences and life journeys and we look beyond the social lens to discuss everything from racism, sexism, representation and mental health. Join me every week as I chat to one of these wonderful women and let's learn how to be/support a kick-ass woman in general! I also make shorter videos where I share snippets of my life, and my life experiences, such as doing a PhD and attending OxBridge universities, and have mindful conversations about important topics.

I really hoped that Ali would say something about that stupidity going on in France. He has a bigger audience and he could’ve spread awareness about how absurd that idea is. It’s clearly islamophobia and against human rights. They always talk about freedom, why MUSLIMS can’t have freedom of choosing what to wear and what not.

@@sebastienfr7445 it is, man. Whose religious practices does it affect? Muslims. It's targeted at Muslims. Covering heads with hijab is to show modesty. It is what has been instructed by our scriptures. Who is it harming when Muslims wear hijabs? The government doing all this is actually making other people think that Islam is a bad practice and that causes islamophobia to spread. I really don't get it. Ours is a religion of peace and people should try to understand that.

@@farhaaan I understand you think like that, but in France we don't wear religious clothes, it's all about the discretion of religion. YOu are free to practice your religion but not in public. For instance i have never worn in France religious clothes in my entire life, or anything politics. You can look at French history and wars of religion if you want to know the origins of these rules. All religions are equal in France and Islam is not above the law. We make targeted laws for them because many don't respect this, and it's normal because Islam is a recent religion in France and needs time to acclimate, so I don't blame muslims.

But what if those people were from France from generations, those people came to France because of France, why you May ask, go do your history lessons you'll know why, secondly no where in the middle east are you not allowed to wear what you want, do you know where dubai is?, only in the mosque and holy sites you're expected to cover up, and all religions expect you to do that, if you enter a church there's a certain way you're expected to behave and dress, similarly in a temple as well as a synagogue

Wow. I think making the consent for sex 15 and consent for wearing smth 18 makes the mentality behind that super clear. ✔️ One day I was in Paris🗼(I am Turkish but I was on a trip). My dad and a shop worker started to chat a little. Then my dad asked to that person where he was from (he was darker, pretty similar skin tone to my dads), smiling and trying to make conversation. He hesitated, couldn’ t answer. Then a French woman who worked there too, jumped in saying: “Oh he’ s French.” The man looked into her eyes so thankful. She gave him a pat on his shoulders smiling, they both acted like she did a favor to him. What shocked me was (It is perfectly ok to be from anywhere ofc) that they viewed to be from a 3rd world country as a bad thing. Something they could hardly pronounce- not even able to say it, in this case. Be ashamed from it. See it as something other than good. He was not even able to address his feelings himself, I felt truly sorry for this person. I am Turkish and there is nothing wrong with that. Even if the Western Media portrays being brown/Middle Eastern/South Asian/Muslim as something negative. I will keep being kind and keep loving to people. But also I will try to make my voice heard, just like commenting these stuff, supporting people like you who try to make a difference and so. ⚖️ Thanks for reading if you read this far!

The experience you had was a tourist experience. It’s a real experience but it doesn’t represent the entire country. I lived in France for 7, I am a black man from an African country and I’ve never had or encountered this kind of behaviour. What I encountered several time was the fact that people with foreign origins are “sent back” to they origins, not all of them, not alway but it happens. For example with my family name some people were always trying to make it sound more African and some people were just going with the right pronounciation. People in France like to say “Paris n’est pas la France” which means Paris is not France. What you see in Paris, is far away from being the overall french experience especially when you are a tourist.
@sinemcelcius
@sinemcelcius 3 года назад
@@RevanDarkStar Of course it doesn' t represent the entire country, there are millions of people in France. I can totally understand him feeling French at that point, still he could say so. Instead of doing that, he couldn' t mention it comfortably and seek some sort of approval from a "real" French person. Also, it is still fine to mention your origins, feeling shame/being uncomfortable about it was shocking to me. Best wishes.

Hi I'm french and I get why you were confused. I might have another interpretation of your interaction knowing a lil bit more about our context. The cliché racist remark in France would be something like "you're not french, you're [insert country of origin]". Thus, I think it's possible that the hidden meaning behind the "he's french" could be something like "he's french, he's one of us despite what some racist people might think about his skin color or his country of origin" and not something about french nationality being better than others. It could also explains why he acted like he was happy that the woman said that, maybe some people told him that he wasn't french because of the color of his skin and it hurted him because he was trying hard to assimilate himself and the remark of the women was just a way to confort him that he was indeed french despite what some people could think or say 🤷‍♂️ I have to idea if it was the case but as a french guy, that's more the interpretation I would give to what the woman said but I might be wrong haha. Anyway, thank for reading this long paragrah and have a nice day !

@Code_with_Me I am from a muslim country too, my idea is why people consider hijab as a burden, it's only a way of clothing with a certain religious signification. And why should we tell girls from any age what to or not wear. Refusing the wear of hijab before 18 is forcing them to wear a specific clothing. And I've always been wondering why 18???
@mariamwhb1042

First of all families dont push their girls to wear hijab. And I dont think that a girl will approve to cover her hair under pressure especially in a country like france. Besides, most girls start wearing hijab when they are 15+. "They can wear large pants but their hair shoud not be covered" ! And you call that not telling them what to wear ?! So if a girl likes to wear hats, you will stop her too? Nonsense! The problem is not about the scarf, the problem is what the scarf represents to the society.

in belgium, you cannot wear a hijab to school, every girl goes to school, goes to the bathroom removes their hijab, goes on with their day, and at the end of the day, they put it on again to go outside of school lol. we are not allowed to show religion in anyway, so wearing a cross is also not allowed and also the dresscode is also strict in other ways (not just hijab), no shorts for boys, but girls can wear skirts they are longer than knee-level (?? also sexist), no tanktop, no holes in jeans, no shoulder showing, etc. but i think that is also the case in england probably (not sure tho) i don't know how i feel about this, i think they should let everybody express themselves the way they want with their clothing, but i also do not think it is islamophobic since nobody can show religion not only muslim girls, it's ... religion-phobic don't know let me know what you think

I'm a Brit living in France and not religious at all. I don't agree with banning the hijab just like I don't agree with banning a nun wearing a habit. The hypocritical (racist? xenophobic? Islamophobic?) take having no issue with nuns wearing a habit is awful. However I should say I do agree with banning full/majority face coverings, not specifically the Niqab and Burka, although they are the examples used, but _all_ such coverings of the face unless there is a sensible reason for it such as wearing a balaclava if you are working outdoors in a snow storm but not walking down the street in the middle of summer. That, to me at least, isn't a religious thing though just because I personally feel seeing someones face is a very important social construct, I know not everyone agrees with that but it is my personal view of the world. It is a difficult discussion that gets highly emotive very quickly causing the discussion to turn into a mess full of logical fallacies and personal attacks with little progress made on either side. Obviously with the terror attacks in France over the last few years emotions already run high and rather than work together to tackle the causes we end up with these pointless ideas that just hammer a bigger wedge between different communities and the cycle continues.

I’ve lived in France for 7 years, I come from an African Country and I am not religious at all. I am not in France anymore but this situation is very complex, the way the french society is built is very unique in Europe and even in the world and when you’re coming from another country it can be weird for you. The easy way would be to say that it’s racist or xenophobic but if you take the long path and dive into how the society was built you will understand why a lot of people think this way and you will understand their definition of Secularism. Should they change they society regarding secularism? Maybe. Are they willing to? I don’t know.

Apart from class mums not being allowed to wear hijab when accompanying students on field trips, the law actually makes perfect sense. As a secular country (“laïcité” is a concept that foreigners struggle to grasp), we believe that children, through school, should be raised according to the laws and values of the republic, which are inherently secular themselves. As minors, their “consent” to the hijab doesn’t truly exist, therefore they shouldn’t wear it. As adults, they have the right to wear whatever makes them happy and is a direct result of their choice (which is not gonna be the case for an 11 year old girl trying to imitate her mother). As to your caractérisation of this law being islamophobic, because it targets the Muslim community more than others, ask yourself the following question : in the last 10 years, extremists claiming to be from which community have been the greatest threat to our “laïcité” and our freedom of speech? Past events such as those you have mentioned (Samuel Paty, Charlie Hebdo) clearly make my points.

Hello Sheen, as a French law student, it is super interesting to get to hear your point of view on this topic. Even though I 100% agree with you on the fact that such law is problematic, it seems to me that you don't really understand where it comes from. The concepts of secularism in France and in the UK are really different. In France, we call it "laïcité" and it includes freedom of religion of course but also a strong separation between state and church. The idea is that the state, the government and the administration should be completely neutral towards religions. That is why public workers such as teachers, anyone working in a public hospital, members of Parliament etc.. can not wear any signs expressing their beliefs. So, the question of banning the hijab (and every other religious signs) for the mothers accompanying their children during school trips is linked to that. Should the parent helping teachers during those trips be considered as public workers? If yes, then the same rules should be applied. It's this same idea that led to the ban of religious visible signs (mostly hijab) for the students in French public schools in the early 2000s. These rules are well accepted in France and are part of our culture. To me, on the opposite way, it is shocking to see that the head of state in the UK is also the head of church, or to see the US president swearing on the bible during the inauguration for exemple. So the problem of "laïcité" in France is to find the right balance between citizens freedom and neutrality of the state. To me, those amendments are going way too far in the protection of the state neutrality, as it is discriminating towards muslim women cause they are certainly the most concerned ones. I just wanted to let you know that this is the result of the French view on secularism, that could be resumed as the aim to make everything that is linked to the state religion-free. I could go for hours about this topic that I find super interesting, but I'll have to stop here haha. Tell me if you'd like some ressources about it!
@samiraansari5686
@samiraansari5686 3 года назад
I can see your point, but I think the problem is that first of all parents on school trips are not public workers, and also this is effectively just going to deter Muslim mothers from getting involved in school trips or other school events at all. Which is sad, because education should become more inclusive, not exclude people. And she is right in that the attitudes prevalent against Muslim people are not quite present when it comes to Christians, or other religions. And honestly, the Burkini thing is just ridiculous. Forcing women to expose themselves more than they are comfortable with when they are bathing sucks, and effectively banning Muslim women from public baths by not letting them bath in a way that makes them comfortable is plain islamophobia.

Interesting topic! I liked that you framed the context of this law too - laïcité is a huge part of French public life and a principle upon which the French gouvernement is constantly working. But it’s not a very simple principle to apply and its exact definition is not agreed upon by everyone. I personally find the amendement ridiculous. You do not fight extremism by forbidding young girls to wear a scarf on their heads, nor by forbidding mothers to go on school trips. And this idea of trying to erase what makes individuals or communities different to make them “equals” is beyond flawed.

You cannot compare catholic nuns with Muslim teenagers- 1. there is only a handful of nuns wearing robes compared to Muslim girls wearing hijabs, so it’s basically not a social issue, 2. it virtually never happens today that parents tell their daughters to become a nun. Women become nuns usually at a later age and of heir own volition 3. there is no social pressure to become a nun and wear a gown in European countries, while there is social pressure (from some Muslim communities/parents) to wear a hijab, 3. women have a lot more rights in European countries than they have in many Muslim countries/cultures/communities (I know that‘s a generalization but it’s a clear tendency), and a hijab can be seen as a symbol of that, 4. nuns live in monasteries for the most part and have chosen a life that is explicitly separated from public life, while a hijab is an everyday piece of religious clothing
