I think he came at her and she defended herself, but who knows? I like the way you tell these stories!

I think “dad” was mad, came after her and she defended herself. I think she did hit him and he fell, hit his head and died. Self defense. Is her little sister still alive? If so, Maybe she can tell the truth.

I believe there is a movie, "Fire Down Under," that had a similar story. The movie was filmed in Jenkins, KY. In the movie, the young girl was accused of killing her father, but it was her brother who did the job. It seems that her father learned that her brother was molesting her. Her Dad went to whip his son and he killed his father. Who knows what happened to Mr. Maxwell? Perhaps he did come after Edith. IN the movie clip you shared, I immediately recognized the star, who as an older woman, appeared in several episodes of "Perry Mason,:" "Rawhide," "The Rifleman," and many others. Thank you for this really interesting story.

Thanks guys for another interesting story. Your right, the only ones that can tell the actual story are not here. So, all anyone can do is speculate and guess. If the story you told was anywhere near the truth, she was justified. But, different times and mindsets. As for your statement about trying to change people's thinking about "hillbillies ". I don't think you ever will. I've been called hick, hillbilly, most of my life. I just smike at the ignorant fools and say thank you. Some of the "smartest" people I've known in my life have been country folks, hillbillies, and backwoods people. Maybe not book smart, or higher schooled educated. But they were the actual smartest people I've ever known, so if those that are called hillbillies will allow it, I'll be happy to stand on their side of the line. I really enjoy ya'lls channel and the stories ya'll do. God bless ya'll and stay safe out there gettin these stories. 😊

Absolutely love this type of vlog! I think Edith wasn't taking anything off her abusive father bc she watch him treat his wife badly especially when drinking! He was mistreated as a young person and so the cycle continue in his life as an adult I think Edith was taking up for herself in a defensive way as well as protecting her mom! Another well done vlog to the dynamic duo!!

Sounds like dad was an angry, abusive drunk. I think one or both mom and Edith did what they had to do to protect themselves. I was shocked that she got 25 years. There's a reason that Eleanor Roosevelt is such a boloved First Lady.

I think she was defending herself! I lived in Wise up the mnt from Pound I lived there from 1985 and left in 2013 when oil and gas rigs move to Ohio and have never heard of this story! This is so interesting and show just how little rights and independence women had back!

Know how to live off the land and to make due with little. City slickers go nuts without power for the microwave!! The rest of us hillbillies don't freak out when power is out..we know different ways to cook over fires. Know which wild plants are safe to eat or use for medicine. So really who are the stupid ones..I would rather my country living!

Interesting story. Sad, but interesting. It was probably self-defense. As to who actually struck the fatal blow, we will probably never know. He was drunk, had to have been, to have torn off half of her clothes. He was probably way too strict with his wife and children. Just unfortunate. Thank you very much Leo and Heather, for another interesting video. 😊

Men could be very abusive of their family in those days, and I have heard many stories from the past that confirms this. Why? Because they could get by with abuse of spouse and children. I am immediately inclined to be on her side. The young lady was already working at a time when there were few trades for women. If truth be known he was probably a man who ruled his household with an iron fist, and at 21 she was having none of that. I hate that her life was further ruined by this man she had to call her father.

Heard my grandfather tell a story about him and his friends "kidnapping " a fellow who like to beat his wife and children and drink up his money on payday leaving his family with nothing. They tied him to a tree and beat him with a leather strap. Left him there and went and told his wife where to find him. Told him if he did it again no one would find him. Dont know if this really happened or if maybe he embellished it a little or not but he was on old country boy from Alabama.

Most likely he was a mean old drunk who kept the women in the house terrified of him. A story that is way too common, unfortunately. The injuries indicate he was hit in the face, fell over and hit the back of his head. Probably because he was drunk enough that she could knock him over.
