During a couple of hours spent in the City of Rochester, New York a couple of weeks back, I took advantage of the time and shot some video of a long forgotten cemetery in Irondequoit. The Hooker family cemetery was the town's first public burial ground, but was forgotten about and nearly lost to development.

I lived about a half a mile from the Hooker house in the early to mid -60's . We used to sneak into that old haunted house to explore. I still have a piece of the old Hooker house in my garage I took as a sovereign before it was tore down. Never knew that Merchants Rd. ran through the property, we used to ride our bikes on that dirt path from Portland to Goodman. I always thought it was wrong that all those old graves were bulldozed and left unattended back in the day. i need to take a trip back there again. Thanks for the history lesson!

This comes from thinking that people are merely a clump of cells.

Legend has it that when the intersection of Manitou and West Ridge roads was being built up, that crews came across bones from the Hoosick Hill Cemetery when excavating.

The Hooker home was razed to make room for the St. Annes Home expansion. The Hooker House location was situated just south of the Keeler Expressway.

Use to explore the old Hooker house as a kid. Thought it disappeared when they cleared for the expressway, but maybe it was before that. Thanks for the new information!

@@FlynBrian You did some extensive research, and made a quality narrated presentation! I grew up in East Irondequoit and attended nearby Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in the early to mid1960s. I did some exploring at the Hooker homestead back then... I remember the Keeler Street expressway opened or was finished being constructed in 1969. One memory from 1967 where I snuck a 3 am ride on Keeler just before it was opened. Apparently, The Hooker home was still standing until July 1967. I recall there was a preservation push to keep the home but it was razed in July 1967 due to lack of community backing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_State_Route_104 mcnygenealogy.com/cem/hooker.htm

There is a saying, that you can tell the advancement of a society by how it treats its dead.
