During a short visit to the City of Rochester, New York, I went in search of an abandoned 14-mile section of the original Erie Canal. Found hiding behind the Pittsford Plaza, the decaying remnants of a canal lock has be languishing, forgotten about for over 100-years. An interesting relic of New York and City of Rochester history!

Nice quiet walk or single track bike ride. And this canal meets up with the current active Erie Canal and Path which is paved. It’s about 2 miles by path from canal town Pittsford and Schoen Place where you can take a ride on the Sam Patch canal boat.

Thanks for this video! My friends and I used to explore this lock on our back way to Pittsford Plaza in the 60s and early 70s.

Very nice that there is no graffiti on the lock too! The incomplete Newmarket canal than never opened has graffiti all over it. Would be nice to seem them also better attended and thanks for the video.

Maybe they could make it into a picnic area with tables in the canal.

That is a good idea! However, it has been 44-yrs since I have lived in Rochester. It will be up to the good citizens of Pittsford to weigh in on the idea and make it happen if they desire. I hope they do something with it as it is a great piece of town history.

I suspect they may not want to bring attention to it. It raises too many questions about how that could be built in pre industrial revolution America. It's clearly not possible in the 1820s by that day's technology.

@@Hopeless_and_Forlorn Another goober who won't look at the facts. They can barely complete any major project today in under 8 years---only basic roads and buildings with today's tech. in 1820, with pig poop and horse & buggy they came in early and under budget in a time frame that likely could not happen even today. You people need to wake up. There was an infrastructure already in the US that scoundrels took credit for.

People too used to a cushy life run on machinery trend to severely underestimate what a few hundred strong men with shovels can do given enough time. I've dug trenches for drainage pipes and dug out foundation footings for shed by hand. Not fun but 2 guys can do it in a day. Bigger hole just takes more men and more time. Get some mule teams hauling away dirt and it makes it easier.

@@Hopeless_and_Forlorn yea some folks seem to forget we've had shovels for thousands of years, and that Locks ain't nothing but big water tight shots.

Those metal strips that secured the blocks together can be found in ancient construction, as in the Egyptian pyramids. These locks were not built by drunken Irishmen, nope..way earlier than the 1800s

Why do people believe it was built in 8 years before the industrial revolution by basically primitive people? That's not possible. Those ruins show an incredible accomplishment that just got abandoned for no reason? I don't buy these quaint versions of history. The canal was clearly already there, probably built well before the 19th century.
@KKP-

Absolutely agree. Hidden for a reason. Covering up for a reason. The ancient civilizations had electricity .. free electricity. Mud floods prove this to be true. Autodidactic channel or Jon Levi explain and show the proof of the Tartarians

@@matsumoku1 y'all are seriously over thinking this and under thinking it at the same time First of all most of what you're looking at wasn't from the 1820s. This canal was in active use for a long time and improved and renovated all along. Your arguments like going into Windsor castle and thinking the lights prove electricity existed back then
