Great vid, really enjoyed the history as well. Am in the process of restoring no 3 so this and other vids is of invaluable help. Interesting that you used a roller for the painting. I dont want the paint on mine to look too thick if that makes sense. I also have one of the last no 3 made in England and the paint on that is quite thin in comparison. Thank you again.
I wanted a Record for so long. And just a few weeks ago, I got one. I have a Number 6 Record in excellent working shape. But I plan on restoring it to look brand new. I even just this week bought a sand blaster to help me with the project. Getting this vise has motivated me to totally revamp my workshop. I am building some new cabinetry, reorganizing/rethinking my shop to help me be more productive. I want it all nice to spend what time I have left working with this Vise. Thanks for the history lesson involving the development and success of the Record Company. All I got to say is, "Bloody China."
I recall seeing a photo in the 1960s of a Land Rover on a steel frame with a lug underneath and the whole kit and caboodle was held up in the jaws of a record vice. I've searched for ages trying to find a copy of this but no luck so far ..... anyone out there know ?? The turntables are very handy and I've found them useful for so many jobs. I bought a heavyweight workshop made 1 off jobby, for 4 quid at car boot and that worked great for renovating a 4 hundredweight anvil. The turntable is 2 feet wide using 6 car wheel bearings running on a circular track. The guy I bought it from used it for planting up huge flower pots. Great informative video mate - thanks ps. you might also like the quality of the old Parkinson 'perfect' vices, they are certainly on a par with, or even better than Record vices
Great video and lots of useful imfo, many thanks, the bolt that was added onto the flat bar on the quick release rocker bar has been fitted at some time to stop the vive coming apart when fully open but its not needed if a washer is fitted at the back of the main screw. Really love made in england record vices and have a collection a 4,5,6,22 and a 34 steel always on the look out for a heavy duty and a 116, thanks again for the video.
Great video mate. I restored my dad's record number 25 last year. Fantastic build quality. His one was from the 50's so had flathead screws on the jaws which needed the manual impact treatment! Hope you get lots of use from yours as I do mine. 😁
You simply can’t beat a record vice. They never look quite the same once repainted, but I can see why you did it, just a little too far gone in the patina stakes. I’ve got a lovely 25 that still retains the ‘oil collar’ and ‘genuine record’ transfers on it. The quality of the steel, the castings, rite through to the finish will never be replicated again.
Tottally agree, I have a lovely No3 thats almost out of the factory with the transfer on! I tried my best to find a suitable colour but for me its back in operation. I will be doing a Record No 74 Vice video soon im looking forward to it. Thanks for your comment.
Like any old tools, imagine what you'd be paying in raw materials, labour and wages for all the workers involved in making one today. Hence they're £500+ new for a Chinese one, and theyre only paying Chinese wages and making them out of god knows what cheap crap

It just goes to show that you can find info on virtually any subject on YT. I've got my Dads old No.25 in the back of my car as I type. I remember it from my childhood so he must have had it for 40 years plus. Still in really good working condition but does need a refurb' which is how I ended up here. Great video, has inspired me to get on with mine, just one thing that I find strange is when you film with your phone could you hold in landscape rather than portrait ,it was difficult to see on my phone.

I think that pre '64 vices have a recessed 'record' casting whereas post '64 the casting is proud of the surface.Have a very old no.22, quick release, which has a broken body casting after years and years of very heavy use-looking to try and get a replacement-will try and refurb one when I can search one out.
Thanks for the info. Just took apart a no.5 I just got from a car boot for £25 in pretty good nick so well chuffed. Nicest & biggest vise I've ever had. I just wondered when you put it back together you said you oiled it. I've seen people grease the thread and sliding parts when they put them back together. Just curious if you'd use grease or just oil? Cheers
Great video, thanks for sharing. I'm just starting to strip down my no.25. It's quite an old one I think. The half nut keeper plate is quite short and is only held on with a single bolt. To remove the half nut, you need to slide the entire outer jaw casting out of the main body and let the half nut drop (of the vice is upside down) down. Have you seen this type before and would you know what age it is? I'm struggling to find spares.......
Hi, great vid on the History there, some say there's better makes out there than a Record vice, l don't know as I've only ever had Record, my first being a Record 112 regrettably l sold that he did offer £250 so l took it, still later l regretted it, I've just bought a Record Steel heavy duty that's very similar to the 112, but l believe these are much stronger being made from cast steel, refurbished it yesterday using Bosch 880w grinder n wire wheels, got every bit of paint off, then used Holts brake cleaner degreaser l always use, and repaint using Roundel blue, l used a good quality 1" brush, the Finnished vice now looks great. Have you any idea when the 110 steel vice would have been made? Thanks.
Great video! I've just bought a no.23 to restore, so lots of tips here. One question; mine has has thre quick release mechanism removed. Sites anyone know if it's possible to pick them up separately, or am I looking at trying to find one with a cracked casting that I can strip for the parts?
I found a Record vice no 25 on ebay for £75, ebay lied about how far I had to travel to collect it so it was nearly 500 miles there n back but the bloke was tops even wrapping it and taking it to the car. So I feel still scored, have you seen what price those vices go for on Ebay?
.... and, as pointed out in the video, think of the fella who will be restoring this again 60 years down the line - use Copaslip or similar anti-seize paste on all the bolt threads
gordy galbraith it’s oxford blue international paint from memory! It’s great stuff but takes ages to dry! Around £22 for a litre though! Needs a good coach primer

A really interesting video young man, well done. I also like how you used a close to original dark blue (no idea what shade you used?) unlike some restoration videos using purple, red, gree and gold. I have done a couple of vice restoration videos and used Hammerite Smooth Blue which is totally wrong. I am now persuaded to repaint mine after seeing your video! All the best Jon.

8/10! :-D You'd give mine 25/10 then :-) It's like new except one small angle grinder cut about 1/8" deep in the back of the front jaw, otherwise all original paint and mild patina on the steel/iron.
I think you'll find those screws are an odd old size: 5/16-26 - this info stolen form a reddit thread and a guy with an old 36. I have a fairly old 6 that I replaced the screws on and those were a standard imperial size. I guess they used fine pitch stuff way back then for greater clamping force and anti-back-off properties. I'll soon see what is in my 36p jaws :-)
I've, at home, not in a heavy use environment, killed a brand new makita 4" grinder inside a year. I have some 25+ year old Hitachi 4" grinders that are STILL going strong and several newer ones. I've had dewalt ones like yours apart and was unimpressed, hitachi are way better built, though the dewalt flexvolt grinder is excellent, I have several :-)

Hi Patrick, Sorry i dont seem to be getting notification at the moment. Difficult to date them especial on the 2 series as they didn't really change a great deal. The 2 series vices were made from ductile iron i cant find an exact PSI rating so id guess 40,000 to 60,000 strength? Seems to be the common number?
Brill video, just about to restore my grandads No 25 vice. just bought some of that international oxford blue paint aswell. Did you use enamel primer or coach primer not really sure, and do you use whey oil or weight oil? lol for the sliders thanks again.
Hi George, Great to see another Record being saved. I use ISO VG 68 Oil. (its a nice sticky oil) (not too heavy) and just coach primer. Its great stuff. 320 grit between coats and use panel wipe in between to de-dust and degrease. Happy making thanks for the comment sir.
The quality of Record tools certainly went downhill in later years. I have an old Record 23 probably from the 60's and I consider it to be perhaps the best machinists vice ever made. Too often these gems are over looked and junked because they are just old and rusty. That is a real shame !
thankfully is still huge amount good older quality record woden rededa toga and paramo vices passing through used market as most the new options don't take proper hard use . Irwin ruined the record brand with the minimal spec chinese models. For ductile iron vices they could of sourced in india or kept a high quality range made in UK but they simply not interested in high quality product that lasts as no constant repeat business and less per item profit potential . I'm sure the UK could produce some good vices for Irwin Group if needed and even China could do better if Irwin group truly wanted it . Highlights modern era of profit at any cost, brands ruined, environment ruined churning out junk that scrap almost as soon as out the retail packaging ...
dude i hate to say this but im doing exactly the same vice yet its been apart for two years and hence not fresh in my mind about the quick release so why dont you fucking explain anything or just show the fucking mechanism?? sorry its been a long day and now im dicking around with pause shots!! so what is the deal and point of the vijao?
