President and Founder of Grizzly Industrial, Shiraz Balolia, tells the story of transforming his childhood ambitions into the American Dream.
Shiraz founded Grizzly Industrial Inc., a massive one-stop-shop for all things metal and woodworking machinery and accessories, in the early-1980's with the idea of cutting out the system of middleman markup found with other brands of machinery.
He started his vision from the ground-up with a 'showroom' in the corner of a laundry service entryway, and quickly grew into a massive distributor of high-quality machinery nationwide.
Here, Shiraz walks you step-by-step through the trials and tribulations of the experience of creating his dream from scratch, and how that dream continues to drive Grizzly's mission of providing high-quality machinery at great prices, direct to customers.
Shiraz also has an incredible autobiography out now titled, A Bad Case of Capitalism, which covers his entire life story and the growth of this iconic brand. A must-read for any aspiring business owner! A Bad Case of Capitalism is available on Grizzly.com (link below) or on Amazon.

I see a pattern here. A guy shows up poor, knowing nothing, with fierce determination and hard work, he becomes one of the bests! American Dream, right there. Besides starting his own tooling business which, he didn’t know anything about at first, he also shared the story about his first pistol and how he could not even place a shot on the paper. But since then he has been on the Canadian and USA national rifle teams many times and won many gold medals at ridiculous distance of 1,000 yard! Thanks for showing us that with determination, hard work, and a little bit of luck, one can accomplish anything!

Shiraz, you are not only a good businessman, but you are also a good neighbor... I think I was President of the Bellingham Gun Club when a property owner was trying to close us down due to the noise... Your Letter to the Editor, standing with the gun club describing the length of time we were in business, and our rights and rights of gun owners in general, was inspiring... You helped save the gun club during that time... On several occasions I entered Grizzly's show room looking for you to thank you... Those attempts failed... So, for today, thank you deeply for what you did way back then... Sincerely, Dave Mendelsohn

How many CEOs of modern, multiple million companies can say they used to clean toilets at the business? I would almost guess every single one of the think it's beneath them and their "value" for the company. My hat goes off to this man. Building a company and a brand name from nothing puts him so much more in touch with the business and also with the customers because he is able to relate.

Wow. I just bought my first grizzly product (planer) and this video popped up on the RU-vid feed. I totally thought at the start this guy sitting at his desk was going to read a lame scripted CEO message. Ended up watching the whole thing, blown away, what an awesome guy. Grizzly will be my go to brand knowing he’s still involved in the company.

Your story sounds alot like mine (although on a bigger scale). I chuckled to myself when you said “what is a lathe” and “what is a planner”. Sounds just like me when I started! I started building furniture in 2011 and by 2012 I needed a faster way to make stools tops (at that time I was using a jig saw haha!). That's when I purchased a G1035 shaper off craigslist for $150. Using a guide bearing and template I was able to pump out perfect stool tops. That changed everything for me. Now in 2019, we are running 5 industrial robots in our operation but you know what? I still kept that old shaper! Over the past 7 years, Ive also owed the G1033 and G1140 purchased used as well as the G0613 and G0602 purchased new from grizzly. Ive recommend the G0613 so highly that 4 shops in my industrial complex alone have purchased that saw!

Mr.Shiraz Balolia you should be very proud of what you accomplished. I remember the little ads you had in Fine Home Building and Fine woodworking back in about 85. My boss purchased a 13" or 15" wood planer back then, I ran it for years without any problems. One thing I always liked was that you stood behind what you sold.

I am a Master Craftsman and I have owned your tools for over 30 years. I have recently moved and did not want to take apart all of my shop tools down so I sold it all. I told one person that I was selling my tools and by the end of the day my tools was sold. I took very good care of them and I owned them from the very start of my carrier. The gentleman that bought them wanted to know when did I purchased them and when I told him he was floored cause some loose brand new. Your tools made money for me so it fitting that I should take care of them. The gentleman that bought them was just starting out in woodworking and he felt like he won the lottery. I did buy all new tools and I wanted to say, Thank You for keeping the price down and the quality up. Keep up the good work.

"I probably won't be buying any more large Grizzly tools. (Though I did buy a nice 8" 4-jaw chuck a couple months ago for a great price!) Starting in around '94 I made my first order. By now I have pretty much one of everything and I am certain they will outlast me. Rock solid quality and will never need to be replaced. Virtually no problems except for a couple bearings. I didn't know the story of how Grizzly started, always knew it had to be something like that. It was apparent they were an ethical company at the core. Mr. Balolia, THANK YOU for being you and doing what you did. There is no way I would have ever started in woodworking if your tools hadn't been available. I suppose I could take up metal working...

As a Gunsmith I've always wondered why Grizzly has such a soft spot for us and carries so much Gunsmithing specific equipment when hardly no one else does. Now I know why. Guns and a fellow Gunsmith are pretty much what inspired him to get started on the trail that would one day become Grizzy, which I think is a pretty cool story. I've always liked, been an advocate for, and respected Grizzly ever since I first learned about them at the SHOT Show back in 2009 - 2010 when I was in Gunsmithing school, and was of course blown away by their awesome prices! After watching this great and inspiring story however, I now have so much more respect for them and they will always have a lifetime customer in me! Thank you Grizzly and Shiraz for looking after us Gunsmiths all these years and for your work toward supporting the 2nd amendment, our rights, and way of life.

Great video. I love your story. In 1993 I decided to open a cabinet shop. I shopped and shopped for equipment. I found this new company "Grizzly" that I had never heard of but kept coming back to them because they were 50% cheaper than everybody else. I took a chance and spent my last $5000 on a tablesaw, planer, bandsaw, shaper, belt sander and dust collectors. I am happy to say, 26 years later I have done over 100 custom kitchen and all of the original Grizzly tools are still going strong today. Thank you Grizzly!

I've been woodworking seriously since 1998 but we recently sold our home and I had to dismantle my wonderful shop that I had for 20+ years. I also lost the use of my right hand and arm a few years ago from extensive radiation when I had cancer. I still build things, and it takes a little longer to get things done with one good arm, but my love for woodworking has never diminished. I'm in the process of designing & building a new 36' x 14' woodworking shop inside our barn (building inside a building) and was on the fence about which table saw, planer, and jointer to buy. My son recently purchased a Grizzly table saw and I'm impressed with the quality and price, but was still not sure which company to support. After watching this video, there is no longer any question where my money is going to go. It's refreshing, and, unfortunately, rare, to see such passion and dedication from a company and its owner. Thank you, Shiraz Balolia, for the wonderful video and I can't wait to purchase my new Grizzly power tools! Now, to build that shop!

I love grizzly. I’m now in my 30’s but was given my first grizzly machine when I was 14! Now, a majority of my equipment is Grizzly, (only excluding the vintage stuff I restore.) Everything from inexpensive small table top drill press, to the massive carbide head planers, jointers, etc....I love all of my grizzly equipment… And I always turn to them when buying new (non-vintage) equipment! Great story.! What incredible work ethic! I’ve always greatly enjoyed their hardcopy catalogs, showing off some of their customers work. That’s what first interested me in building guitars. when I was younger and got a hold of one of their mid 90s catalogs!

I have a Grizzly lathe and milling machine. Rock solid equipment that delivers precision parts for an initial cost that made it possible to achieve my goals. Because they buy from manufacturers that once made equipment for Sears I was able to rebuild a Craftsmen sander through their extensive parts department. Instead of the bushings the Craftsman sander had the Grizzly model used bearings in the tracking roller. This sander has new life and is better than before. This speaks to the quality and affordable quality that Grizzly offers across the range of products they sell. Well done!

What a great story. I have heard of Grizzly tools since the 80's adds in the back of woodworking magazines but bought my first Grizzly tool, a phenomenal cabinet saw, in 2017 for my garage hobby shop. Everything from learning about the tool online to ordering to customer service, on down to delivery and setup help has been as great an experience as using my saw. I had ordered a band saw from another company that provided horrible customer service before the tool was even delivered. This was nothing like the Grizzly experience. I cancelled that order and was in the process of researching Grizzly bandsaws when I became engrossed in this video. With a back story like this...how could I purchase from someone else???

I have been a Grizzly purchaser for over 10 years now. There are cheaper machines out there, but I believe that Grizzly has one of the best QC reputations in the import business. It is said that all of the Asian import machines are DIY kits and there is some truth in that. But Grizzly seems to do the best job of maintaining quality of all the importers that I have seen. Oh, a nice touch: I have been to your Springfield store several times. It is a great experience. But I found that having a lounge area where my wife was comfortable while I looked around was extremely nice. Great idea!

It's nice to see such a positive comment section!! I lived n Bellingham for 9 years, just a mile away from the showroom. Grizzly was an integral part of helping me get started in my business machining & fabricating. I first bought a G9729(?) Combo 3 in 1 lathe/mill/drill & taught myself to run a lathe & mill on it. Since upgraded to a 12x36 lathe, square column mill & small benchtop mill, but I still use the G9729 almost every day. It's served me extremely well over the years after heavy modifications & improvements (bought a surplus Wade Turret on eBay & fit it to the dovetail ways). Love the dent & scratch tent sale every year! I know a lot of folks who have relied on grizzly to start their businesses.Thank you!

It's crazy to hear a metal lathe is where you started all of this, since that is specifically how I found your company. Just assumed you started in the wood working industry due to the amount of machinery you have available on that side of things. Hearing your support of the end user definitely buying a lathe this year. Thanks for what you've built for all of us out here Shiraz, and congrats on your success.

Mid '80's I was "downsized" from my job, decided to hang out my own shingle and turn my hobby into a real business, A big deal for me back then was the purchase of their flagship contractor's saw: the 1022. It was one of the best buying decisions I ever did; solid, reliable, never had any downtime, and I made money and a solid reputation with it. ☺

Yes the best tools to keep a saw running well is a air compressor and duster gun to blow the motor clean and use sharp blades.

Love this story. This is why America is great; it makes it possible (though not necessarily easy) for anyone to go from nothing to something. This is not a slogan. This is real live lived by people who came here seeking refuge and a better life for their family.

A great legacy and heart warming story that exemplifies just how important every person is in this world. Grizzly Industries alone has changed lives and launched multiple careers; some developing into substantial businesses; which affects thousands to billions of people world-wide. Quiet an accomplishment and not accidental.

Very good story. I appreciate you putting that together. When I was a kid, I remember my dad buying Grizzly woodworking tools for his cabinet shop. The very first cabinet saw I ever remember seeing was a Grizzly. To me Grizzly meant the best, because that's what dad had. It's quite interesting that I saw this video as I have been looking at metal lathes and milling machines. Grizzly is top on my list. I just wish there a Grizzly store closer to where I live.

I’m still pretty new to woodworking and have been thinking about getting some grizzly tools. After watching this video I am 100% getting those machines now. Not to mention your headquarters is only a couple hour drive from me. What an incredible story of perseverance. You sir are the the American dream.

As a hobbyist woodworker I've had the opportunity to use several great Grizzly tools and have always found them to be very capable machines. As a professional aircraft mechanic, I wish you sold your own brand of mechanics tools, especially some of the more expensive hard to get tools. Service wrenches, thin wrenches, safety wire pliers ect... I am sure with your eye for quality and desire for affordability you could find a market.

After watching this video you can’t say the American dream is dead! You are an inspiration sir I’ve met several people who found a need and built it into a full fledged company. They all came from humble beginnings and will leave a legacy for their family. I’ve purchased a Grizzly lathe and table saw. Both arrived within a few days and have worked great right out of the box. For the price and quality, they can’t be beat. My son now asks me “Dad, when are we going to Springfield for the outdoor tent sale?” Best wishes for continued success!

Great guy. I make pool cues and I remember in the middle 90s at a trade show he browsed all of the cue makers booths and bought a cue from one of my competitors. What I remember most is how nice he was and how many questions he had about our craft. It was difficult for him to decide who to buy from because most of the cuemakers had something in their shop from his company. Great American Success Story!!

I'm building a gasifier for my off grid factory farm in Tennessee. I'm looking for a metal roller machine that will do 11-12Ga Sheet to roll the various sections of the reactor chamber. I was told to look into Grizzly. I had no idea I would come across such an amazing story of the truth of free market capitalism. In this sea of disinformation being put out about our history, it's refreshing and inspiring to see the truth of what freedom and liberty do for the marketplace. I want/will be a builder in the parallel economy and help rebuild our nation with ideals such as free market capitalism, freedom, hard work, and merit based metrics. I look forward to doing business with Grizzly. I'm going to subscribe here and to learn from this great man's success. I believe I can have a similar story! Jesus said, all things are possible for those who believe. Thanks Mr. Balolia for this inspiring video! Role model.

When I was in Portugal, my USA college educated Uber driver said, "If you aren't 'rich' in the USA, you're either stupid or lazy". This man's story is proof positive that with the drive to succeed, the American dream is available to anyone. Also, love my G1023RLW and my G0513X2. Brilliant machines.

I’ve purchased and used Grizzly equipment in a milling shop here in PA. The equipment was all first rate and for the most part free of issues. We used Grizzly saws, planers and jointers along side Weinig equipment and the Grizzly machines were able to keep pace with the German equipment nicely. The operations were different, but the Grizzly equipment was used to feed the Weinig mounding machines and did it quite well. Recently I’ve been involved in setting up a cabinet shop and all of the equipment has come from Grizzly. Some pieces arrived with shipping damage and Grizzly was right there to determine the replacement parts we needed and shipped them quickly. Support techs were also most helpful in helping us understand how to replace some of the more complicated parts. Grizzly is a great company to work with and I expect to continue recommending and purchasing this equipment for a long time. The story explains the experiences that I have personally had with Grizzly and I am happy to finally know the background of the company. Congratulations on your success sir. It is truly inspirational.

I recently retired and I am in the process of starting a small woodshop business as I have always wanted to since working with my dad and building a couple of houses and a few pieces of furniture. I have been researching a lot of the top tool manufacturers and really wanted to buy Made in USA tools. I kept coming back to Grizzly especially for your Price, Quality and Workmanship. After seeing this video, I am sold and will definitely be making my purchases from Grizzly. What an outstanding video and thank you Mr. Shiraz Balolia for creating Grizzly. A dream come true and what an inspiration.
