even thought 99% of players never got past the 4th level and beating the game in 2p mode is simply immposible, is considered one of the best games ever made, is really THAT good...
@@adrianbrown3085 The first time I managed to make it past the Turbo Tunnel I was completely distraught to find that the game just kept GETTING HARDER! It wasn't until years later after discovering emulators and save states that I ever actually got around to beating it. I literally had to go frame-by-frame to beat clinger-winger the first time and I remember thinking 'How the HELL did anyone beat this on the cartridge!?' I thought the game was virtually impossible.
Beating this game on the NES without a game genie is one of the crowning achievements of my childhood. Also gotta mention the arcade version is playable on the Arcade1up Killer Instinct arcade machine, so if you want to play it on an arcade cabinet and you've got $700, there ya go.
The Arcade version is also available on Rare Replay. It was fun to play, and cool to check out after finally being able to play it since it was hard to find at arcades back in the day.
I think the Battletoads reboot in 2020 could’ve been so much better if they stuck with the original designs instead going for the safe “family friendly” style.
They also dissed the gamers who grew up on the franchise and the Queen looked more like a princess with that nerf. Just stop squatting all over the fans and make the game enjoyable without the modern audiences stuff.
The farthest I ever got in the original NES classic was the end of Rat Race, but I never had enough lives left to beat General Slaughter. The 50 page comprehensive guide in Nintendo Power was a lifesaver. Thankfully I had a Game Genie and reluctantly used it to see the end. I have fond memories of my sister and I always fighting each other in the second stage using the wrecking ball attack, then her invariably losing in the turbo tunnel. I got to play the arcade game recently and it's a lot of fun too.
another great video! so many memories of this one. i worked at a video store and always "tested" games when the store was quiet. helped pas the time and get people to rent the games.
I absolutely loved the arcade for Battletoads, it straight up blew my mind. The hard rocking music and bold sounds of carnage… just makes you want to play!
Theres a few games that do that and things like it. Doing it with characters is part of why Little Samson is so expensive lol. But others do it with backgrounds in a less-intensive way of how Mickey Mouse does it on the 16bit and Castlevania iirc. (On Genesis, not Mode 7 on SNES) Its def cool, i always love pixel art with 3D/2.5D epements like that, when done well at least.
There is so much of this game that I have never seen that you are showing me now because of the crazy difficulty. Thanks for filling in the blanks Pat!
I got this game back when it was released... I had so much fun playing it, even though it drove me crazy so many times! That's certainly one of those games that make you wonder how they achieved it with the NES hardware! Great video, Pat! Thanks for the info.
I remember playing this on my NES and got so frustrated I kicked the cabinet my Nintendo was on. I don't know how, but that kick jolted the Nintendo and suddenly I was on the snow level. I couldn't believe it and tried to savor the level because I had never seen it before. I died a few minutes later. Previously I could never get past the Turbo Tunnel.
Awesome video Patman! I never made it past level 3 myself, lol. I would love to watch any other Battletoads content you might have cooking in the pipeline. Please keep at it!
It took us forever, and it was a goal for years… but my friend and I beat Battletoads 2 player on NES without any cheats. We posted it about 6 months ago.
I'm a 90's kid in the east coast when I was 12. We had the Battle Toads arcade in the bowling alley in VA, and we had the Battle Toads cartoon that lasted for at least 2 months as I can remember.
This is an amazing game. I was able to get it through the Rare Replay collection on Xbox One. I can't get too far at all in this game but it is totally awesome. Great video!
Oh I can remember the screams vividly in my ear of failed attempts attempting to beat the first battletoads... Oh those were the days. Also wish you spoke more briefly on the battletoads double dragon for the NES that's the one I grew up with. It seemed to be the main favorite as opposed to the super Nintendo version from many fans. Also I was flabbergasted in mesmerized by the battletoads arcade cabinet if I ever came about it in arcades back in the 90s.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries thank you so much again. If you ever do a dedicated video on the Battletoads Arcade, I will donate even more. Perhaps, even consider adding information on the unreleased Battletoads novel/ screenplay. It is a riot to read.
I've put a lot of time into the original game on the NES but I seriously doubt that I'll ever legitimately ever beat it. Great vid, Pat. I never even knew about the Arcade game.
i paused the video after the mentioning of the rare collection i found it close by at gamestop for $5 thank you so much for this upload highly appreciated
Ha, that introduction with the knock-off imitation brands was funny! :) But also a good intro into these Ninja Turtles-like Battletoads. A difficult series overall, which I never got around to completing. Cool video history, Patman, thanks! Much like the arcade Jackal, I'm thinking I can tap in a 2nd player before losing all lives to extend the continues and chance of survival compared to only playing 1 player the whole game. I'd have to test it out next time.
You know I am not really sure. I try to think what other games would let you do that. I've got one right on the tip of my tongue. Pit fighter for the Genesis possibly? Thanks a lot glad you enjoyed it
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Pit Fighter, cool, thanks. It's a trick where also in Golden Axe on Genesis, you can start a second player game on the very last life/continue of player 1 to keep going most times if needed. Nice work getting through the levels of each game here for this video. I need to try to find the arcade version now. Great video, Thanks Patman!
As a kid my friend had Battletoads, but I didn’t.. so making progress was slow and difficult. In late high school to college I picked it up for $5 used and gave it another shot. It took a lot of practice but eventually I could beat it, and with some more practice i could pass it without too much difficulty. The key early on was loading up with extra lives on the second level. I almost always skipped the fire / jet level though. It’s funny seeing that one pop up as I half forgot it existed as I warp past it so much. Good memories.
I never play a lot of the nes version but I had the gameboy one in 1991 and beat it. The music for the GB version of battletoads is so dope stage 3 music when t you fight the darkling is classic.
I remember being a very little kid and watching two other kids play the arcade version in the concession stand of the local drive-in movie theater. Completely remember the excitement and me seeing the animation of the toad morphing the big football helmet as the combo finisher. It was just insane to me at the time. I’m 38 years old now, and I still very clearly remember watching actual greatness.
We did have game stops around here until the mid-90s. Before that it was EB games and before that it was electronics boutique. That's where we got the majority of our titles
I think Mr. F3z07 is referring to a popular prank around 2007, 2008, where the prankster would call a Gamestop and ask if they have Battletoads for the Wii in stock. Then they would have jolly hearty laugh at the clerk's confusion.@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries
Great review. One of only a handful of NES games that I never completed back in the day. My somewhat silly theory is that the designers were seeking revenge for the feedback they received that Wizards and Warriors was too easy. So with IronSword and BattleToads they decided to torture us and made sure no one would ever say such a thing ever again. I think if NES Battletoads was given unlimited continues or a password less of us would have rage quit in defeat.
Their response was always that they wanted gamers to get their money's worth which is why they made it so difficult. They even said something along the lines of "there's nothing worse than an easy game"
I never got into those types of games but I'd be interested to see Dance Dance Revolution as well. That game always had a huge crowd surrounding it in my local arcade.
The sad thing about the arcade game is that it was originally meant to have so much more content, it originally had nine levels and nine bosses and even dialogue in cutscenes
I absolutely loved this game growing up and it was one of the few that I was able to beat after years of practice and persistence. Now Battletoads and Double Dragon, that one was impossible lol.
Only reason I was ever able to beat Battletoads was the repelling Wookie Hole level. I got stupid good at getting extra lives from the crows in that level. It would give you throwaway lives so you could spend more time getting used to and memorizing the different aspects of the game. Add to that the warps in the speeder bike level and the snake pit - and even with that I only beat the game once or twice. The only level I could never beat was Volkmire's Inferno.
Excellent video about a good franchise, which unfortunately has been forgotten. The last release could have been better worked on. I played on SNES and Megra Drive a long time ago
Nice to see some love for the Xbox reboot. I agree that the super crispy and fluid 4K animation style was way cool. The genre variety in the game almost reminded me of Three Dirty Dwarves for Sega Saturn.
I did not like the updated art style at all Xbox could’ve delivered way better and the game would’ve been way more popular as a result. I will say the gameplay was incredibly fun and challenging.
I like the art style. It was super clean, cartoony, expressive and lended itself well to the seamless transitions between gameplay styles and cartoon episode style sequences. I've always been OK with the innumerable variations of TMNT cartoons and comics, so it wasn't a big deal for me. I think it could have functioned as an interactive TV Pilot episode for an ongoing animation series as well. I suspect the development probably got some of it's internal support cut after the extreme overreaction to the initial reveal trailer. In terms of popularity, it probably would have been able to find a niche if older fans hadn't gatekept it so hard. There's a few meta jokes in the game that kind of touch on the circumstances, I think.
@@SotNist I agree the game was definitely fun. But the game was founded on hardcore heavy metal rock appeal with its hard edge art stylings. And to go from that to what we got wasn’t an easy transition, it was just very watered down. Most gen z kids don’t connect with cool designs like the stuff we grew up with. But rather happy go lucky fluffy or goofy stuff from what I see in the games they love like. Besides most Battle toads fans were the older gamers from that generation of kids like myself and we waited years for this and wanted to see a fully loaded modernized version with the cool classic look.
Of all the fighting games like Double Dragon out there Battletoads is my favorite just because u are not just fighting on each level & i was still in High School & used my own money 2 buy the game 4 my best friends birthday. You bet I was at his house 2 play this game too! Also because like Castlevania this was not a port from the Arcades it was made specifically for the Home Console! To this day I still have not beaten the Classic NES or Game Boy game! The higher you climb Zit, the further you fall & then you'll pop like a Zit! This game is brutal...!!!!
I don't feel bad. The game play is excellent & I go back 2 this game constantly! It's hard in a good way! Always ready 2 return for more!@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries
I still love the Battletoads, but do to my seizures I can never play it again. But I do remember when Battletoads and Double Dragon came out, my brother and I looked at each other and said this game would have been better if the Battletoads had been teamed up with the Turtles instead.
The Nes game is something I've beaten without any cheats from start to finish, but I had to use Game Genie and infinite lives as training wheels to get to that point. My middle brother and I would warp staight to a stage, and get killed repeatedly till both of were good enough complete the stage together. We'd usually turn the game off after getting through the level. We go through level by level till we could put all together and do the entire thing. This of course ran into a wall at lvl 11, as you can't beat the Clinger Winger with two people as the second player controls are bugged.(Some other poster claims it's doable.) They will simply die over and over helplessly. No one ever made it far enough into beta testing with two characters to catch the bug in time. The Arcade game I think is probably the best overall experience as it's tough, but not as ball breaking as the NES title. Beating a 3 player beat em up affair, I think it grabs a much larger audience as it's not weighted down by the stupidly hard vehicle parts. I fiorst played the Arcade beat em in my early teens and just laughed my ass off when I saw the over the top animations. A younger kid happen to join in as I played, and we were both laughing so hard. I actually remember tearing up from laughing so much. Young boys definitely were the target audience for this game, as it was SUPER EFFECTIVE. I didn't see in too many places, or I would played it all way through. I didn't get to beat from start to finish till a year or two ago at the Galloping Ghost with a friend of mine who never played it before. He said was his favorite game he played that day when we went there for a couple hours with his wife and daughter. Battle Toads and Double Dragon was definitely more Battle Toads than a Double Dragon game. It felt like a mod of the NES game with the double dragon cast inserted. It's fun enough, and much easier than the original game, but I wonder how many people were like I want to play as the Toad not the Lee brothers, but were forced to as player 2.
In my opinion as the series progressed the difficulty Getting lower and lower. With that being said the fun factor went up for me especially with the arcade game. I loved the over-the-top animations as well.
