Introduction snippet:
By the early 1990’s, British game developer Rare, had already established an impressive catalogue of software for Nintendo’s massively successful NES console with hits like Wizards & Warriors and R.C. Pro-Am. Around this same time, a popular series titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had reached peak popularity spawning movies, comics, video games, and a hit TV show. Turtlemania was sweeping the nation in full swing by this point, bringing in boatloads of money to its owners. Many companies tried to cash in on the success of the popular franchise with their own versions of the turtles and Rare was no exception. In 1991, they began work on their own series featuring anthropomorphic animals, though there would be no turtles found here, but instead three muscular amphibians that would eventually come to be known as the Battletoads.

The turbo tunnel really is the biggest shot in the foot for the first game, mostly for being just so early in it. It's brutal difficulty kept a lot of people from seeing all the other gameplay varieties it had after it. I mean tons of games we played back then were intentionally difficult but that one particular level in little ol' Battletoads just kicked it up that extra notch into controller-snapping frustration territory.
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade Год назад
Yeah, it is probably the most infamous example of a difficulty spike in a video game. I agree that it's early placement is quite strange. A huge crowd of people missed out on seeing just how interesting and unique some of the later levels were, but that sort of thing was pretty common in the 80s/90s. I also think it's a big reason why the series became so associated with the beat'em up genre since most people only got to play the first few levels.

Despite the lack of "new-ness" the SNES version is my favorite regardless. I just enjoy the upgraded sounds and visuals over the original. The changed style just had more impact than the NES, no matter how iconic it may be to the majority of players. I'm standing by that.

Also the arcade game was originally developed in 1992 and the Toads we’re originally going to cuss and the Brian chase level was originally going to be in the arcade game 12:11

As a kid I wasn't gamer, so I didn't know that people really love battletoads,I thought game is more remembered because of brutal difficulty. I was surprised how many people didn't like last game because it "wasn't brawler", but older games was mix of different genres too, not just brawler. But yeah,Interesting video as always!

Thanks a lot, appreciate you watching! Yeah, it’s such a strange series because the first game was classified as a beat’em up but it was WAY more than that. I feel like people just don’t know what to make of Battletoads these days, hence why I thought it’d make an interesting topic.

This game was extremely hard, and what made it stand out in its difficulty was its gameplay. Some games are just hard but gameplay is not appealing, so to me this really makes up for the grinding we had to go through. I remember me and my brother, hands sweating at the final stage, I died and he had to finish it lol. The ending was disappointing but meh, who cares? The game was simply amazing. Me and a friend also developed this versus, where we started the game and beat each other haha, the monsters were added difficulty to the landscape and weapons (stick and mini dragon thing) made it more fun. Man great times.

Thanks so much for watching Bow! I definitely love the games even when I'm destroying controllers and screaming expletives that would make George Carlin blush. I definitely hope that they continue the series in and like you said, stick a little closer to the original formula. That said, I still enjoyed Battletoads 2020 for the things it got right, but man, the enemies in the beat'em up sections are just WAY too damage sponge-y and that really hurt the experience for me.

Battletoads is weird in that it feels like a big franchise but in reality it's only about 3 games. I guess its combination of cult status and overall potential that creates this impression.
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade 2 года назад
Battletoads was pretty big deal back in the early 90s because it had a pretty big marketing campaign and became infamous for its absurd difficulty which definitely gained it a cult status like you said. I think the stupid GameStop meme also helped keep it relevant throughout the years also, haha.

I didn't know about the planned Battlemaniacs ports! I'd be very interested to see what the GameBoy version of that game looked like. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the Battletoads, but I appreciate and ALMOST LIKE the games in the series that I've played. I think the soundtrack to the GameBoy version (the original game, not the port) has some of David Wise's most under-appreciated music. Seems like a lot of his back catalog got forgotten as soon as he started the DKC soundtracks, lol
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade Год назад
I'm far from a mega fan of the series, but I enjoy the games and covered it because it was such an interesting story. The OG Game Boy game has an amazing OST and, like you said, I agree that David Wise's earlier back catalog of music is often sadly ignored these days. Thanks for watching man!

Contemporary reviewers were unfair to Battletoads & Double Dragon, how could they praise the first game's difficulty when it was so frustrating but bash BT&DD for being difficult when it's the easiest Battletoads game with the best balance between fun and challenge? For one, the turbo tunnel section in it is actually enjoyable thanks to the absence of death pits, and there's more focus on beat em up gameplay which I personally preferred to the pace breaking gimmick sections of the original. I don't know, maybe the 16-bit ports were somehow harder but the original NES release sure was fine. Really underrated game, I'd even go as far as to say it's the best BT title. As amazing as Arcade BT is, it gets points deducted for being unfinished and too hard.

Growing up, I only knew one person who had the original NES game. I had a subscription to Nintendo Power, but it kinda put me off buying the game because I didn't really dig the idea of "Difficult" as a genre, but I never knew about all the attempts to continue/revive the series after the Double Dragon cross-over. It honestly wasn't until MAGFest that I found out how many people really loved the game.

great video! I love Battletoads - I think they did best on the NES, we got it when it first came out and we played the heck out of it, took us forever to beat it. We had a subscription to Nintendo Power at the time and I still have that issue. I thought it was hard but didnt realize what a reputation it had until I was an adult, glad I can play through it and enjoy it (I use warps lol). I havent tried the new one, but I dont really like what they did with the art style, may give it a chance at some point.
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade 3 года назад
Thanks so much! Yeah, it’s such a strange, interesting series. I certainly agree about the new game’s art style, but there’s still a at the very least decent game underneath it all. I’d love to see something more gritty in the future like the style they used in their Killer Instinct cameo.

I can't feel the new title because of the art/presentation. The 'toads are 90's anthropomorphic superhero buddy satire. Keep it that way! Edit: & with bitchin' synth Metal! Edit 2: Oh & Coin-Op was the best one! I prefer more of the brawler stages, brutal edge & 3P. Simply Battletoads @ their peak. Too bad it was unfinished with Karnath being the boss of a Christmas stage..
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade 3 года назад
Yeah, the arcade game definitely was awesome, but had a bumpy development, then again it was EA involved with it, haha. The Karnath boss at the end of the snow stage is definitely incredibly odd and shows that a stage either got cut or was never finished. I'd love to ask someone at Rare about that.

Nice review of the series. I do disagree about giving the reboot a chance. It's a dumpster fire. They didn't respect the source material and took their own liberties and odd creative design choices to bastardize the series, in a very similar fashion as what recently happened with ThunderCats.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, the 2020 series is definitely rough around the edges without a doubt, but I think they got some things right. I can 100% understand fans’ frustration with it though. Would’ve loved to see them use the style they used in Killer Instinct instead.

@@RewindArcade I got hung up on the combat, it just didn't feel like Battletoads at all. To much of a reliance on the dashing mechanic and all the weird enemy gimmicks, instead of just being a fun brawler like you'd expect. Which hurts even more now that we're seeing a resurgence of retro style beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage and TMNT coming back that not only are fun to play but respect the formula of their predecessors. Not to mention the tone of the game, honestly I was hoping for some more crass humor and violence like the arcade game.
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade 2 года назад
I certainly don't disagree with you at all. The retro beat'em up resurgence happening right now gives me hope that MS/Rare will give the toads another shot in the future. I really liked the style they used for Rash in the new Killer Instinct, but I'd LOVE to see a new one that used high quality sprite art. I guess time will tell....
@afropowa1598
@afropowa1598 Год назад
I was such a big TMNT groupie fan as a kid that I refuse to play any Battletoads game! However when I was teenager I did play & enjoy Battletoads & Double Dragon....mainly for the Double Dragon side, since I like that series. Years later I play the original on the NES........yeah that game is really hard & unfair. You have a health bar yet alot of enemies can just combo you to death, it is hard to hit enemies sometime like those stupid space invader enemies and limited continues made me give up on beating that game. Battletoads & Double Dragon was easier & fairer but it had his own share of BS as well. The Gameboy confusing titles was just so stupid, it like they wasn't trying to sell games. Prank calling is dumb as hell to begin with but over Battletoads too?! Life is needed for those dumbasses. The 2020 one was actually fun but the beat em up levels were too long, the cult levels were boring and fixing the spaceship minigame was just so damn confusing since the game didn't give a clearer tutorial on it. The graphic was good and storyline was actually funny. Gamers also complain about the latest Black Queen not being sexy anymore. Also all the game osts are really good!
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade Год назад
The series has definitely had a bumpy history in terms of game quality. I thought Battletoads 2020 was pretty fun, but I really didn’t like how damage sponge-y the enemies were. That killed a lot of my enjoyment of the game. I do agree that all of the soundtracks for the series are amazing though. Thanks for watching!
