The crummy thing about Outrun was also losing 5-7 seconds anytime you crashed. Do it more than once and you might as well restart the map. Was happy when I first played Crusin’ USA and found that this was not an issue
0:03 @@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries , I wonder if you covered The Fast and the Furious arcade and console racing games in your video as well? I think that one of them was horribly redone as the Wii title of Cruis'N', which was a low point for the franchise.
I bet you _really_ hated Ferrari F355 Challenge. Sega was always more punishing in their racing games which are more fitting for home consoles where you can practice instead of the arcade where it's eating quarters quickly.
You missed the entire point of arcade games you dingus. They're meant to be punishing so you can pump more quarters in so the operator can keep their doors open
The Cruis'n series is definitely some of my favorite Arcade racing titles. Every time I go to the Arcade, movie theater, or pizza joint, and I see a Cruis'n game there, it was definitely my go-to Arcade game I would play. I remember back in 2017, I tried Cruis'n Blast at Dave & Buster's, and it was a lot of fun. Of course it got released on the Nintendo Switch and it is STILL a blast to play albeit no online multiplayer modes.
Honestly, what the game needs is to have the Wii title of Cruis'N' to totally be redone, as well as to make an equivalent to the Super Mario All-Stars/Super Mario Collection/Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario World bundle pack, but with the Cruis'N' games, and, hopefully, with the permission of the proper parties, to have the additional The Fast and the Furious, as well as The Fast and the Furious: Super Bikes, games ported to the Switch in this collection, as well as to also add bonus games, such as Excitebike 64, Excite Truck, and the entire Excitebike series, including the FDS/Japanese games, into the collection as well.
I was coming to type this. Before the documentary mentioned the full motion version I thought that it was just a prototype. Also now that I think about it I don't know if I ever seen a stand up cabinet either.
Eugene Jarvis is a true arcade gaming legend. He also worked with Housemarque on Nex Machina. His newest team did Crusin Blast too, which is really fun.
I played this racer in the arcade and I loved it. I was thankful that I was able to enjoy this experience on my Nintendo 64 and it was very exciting buying this on day 1
I'm really salty when I remember this game, because my father asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said this game, but a sellsman was like "if your son likes that, buy "San Francisco Rush 2049"!!" This is the second time I was let down by my father, because "San Francisco Rush 2049" and "Cruisin' USA" aren't AT ALL the same experience!! It sucked!! 🤬🤬
Outrun like bad dudes, double dragon was always a 7-11 game. That was the first time i played it. Cruzin was one of the few decent games on the N64. Switch version is not bad. Speaking of censorship Cararmageddon is even worse. I have the original pc version. Very violent. Running over handicap people and leaving blood tracks is so much fun. No offense. Its just a game
I didnt know he was behind Raw Thrills. Ive seen their games at the arcade, but didnt know much about them. They all have a very retro feel despite being relatively new games.
I just want to say you are one the few arcade video gaming documentary channels that I actually stop and take the time to watch. You actually go into deep detail about the development of these games. (Unlike so many other channels that just rush 10 minute video to get max RU-vid advertisement money. And barely go into details of the history of making the game).
loved this in the arcades and so many memories of the 64 port. i remember listening to the actual radio someone hooked up to the side. it was so weird but cool at the same time. taught me how to drive when i was a kid.
Hours of playing Outrun in the car-shaped cabinet at the local arcade is probably why I'm still drawn to the genre (e.g. Slipstream and 80's Overdrive on the Switch). It's a shame I never got to play Cruis'n USA back then.
Awesome video as always. I adore Cruisn' USA and its sequels. Its such a shame that most aren't playable in MAME still... as the N64 ports whilst ok (especially when upscaled) don't play the same. I was really hopeful Eugene would release a Cruisn' series compilation on the Switch... but at least we got Blast. One thing to note is Cruisn' also came out on the Wii which was basically Fast & Furious arcade game with a name swap. The Wii struggled to run it though. I am so desperate to play this again in the arcade... Arcade Club in the UK had a stand up once when I went years ago there... but it got replaced... Each time I go in the queue at Arcade Club they have a Cruisn Exotica not working which rubs it in to me as I never got to play it in the arcades only on the N64. I do adore Raw Thrill games and really wish they released their games in the home... So many from their Super Cars, Super Bikes, Dirty Drivin' etc are pure heaven and more people need to play it. I was really hoping this would happen after Cruisn' Blast got released... but I guess sales weren't great.
The first two games are playable in Mame emulator but exotica still has issues. He does want to release a trilogy on the switch so we'll see. Thanks for the info on the Nintendo Wii version I should've mentioned that.
I remember my cousin from Canada came to visit me in the UK and we were playing this at the arcade in the bowling alley and he showed me how to unlock the school bus and cop car. I didn't even know there were cheats for arcade machinces. It was epic.
Well done! I love this series. It was fun arcade racing games like this that made me a retro gamer and track down a N64. I have all the Cruis'n games on the N64 and I can tell you the N64 Race Wheel really imposes the twitchy game controls. I also have Cruis'n for the Wii as well as Crus'n Blast on the Switch. In a sea of hyper realistic racers, these Cruis'n games are a breath of fresh air with their focus on fun arcade style racing.
Not sure if Cruisin USA was cutting edge Arcade tech. The board was superior to consoles, sure, but still not nearly as advanced as something like the Model 2 or the equivalent Namco system for Ridge Racer.
Crazy looking back because I remember it looking amazing but like many games it looks far worse than I remember. The modern games are OK but don't hold up as well unless you're really forgiving due to nostalgia. I think they just got a little TOO ridiculous for my taste and aren't as entertaining in my 40s as they were to teenage me in the 90s.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I mean, if I want to go super ridiculous I far preferred Crazy Taxi where you had the depth of actual goals outside of just "go fast". There's a ton of games now that do ridiculous better like Mario Kart. While the mobile iterations of CT we've seen since were woefully disappointing I'm far more interested in the upcoming Crazy Taxi than if I heard they were rebooting Cruis'n.
Love the Cruis'n Series! Did not play the Blast in the Arcades, but do own it on my Switch Lite! Got to race as a UFO!!! Watching this video makes me want to play it right now! Yep, going to do it. Gettin that Patman Fever to playin Cruis'n Blast!! I'm out!!
I got your golden shower joke there, good one. When it comes to the cruisin games i hated them with a passion and i love driving/racing games. Well Patman you did it again my freind, another awesome documentory.Thankyou again.
Wow! Jamming with the President of the USA in a hot tub circa 1994 must've been a real party. Especially when remembering who was president there at the time! Cigars anybody?
There's a place near by me we would have birthday parties at...its kind of like Chuck E Cheese... I played this and Killer Instinct there whenever I had a chance. Hillary was horrible then and horrible now...happy Nintendo got her out of the game.Great video!
yeah, I didn't believe it till I tried it and once I confirmed that you crashed less from hits, that became my favorite vehicle. Also, If you look closely you may see someone scared in the emergency exit.
Huh there is a fourth hidden car at least on the link cabinets. Had to hold the top and bottom view buttons(or all three it’s been decades...) swing the wheel left, swing the wheel right then double tap the gas and select the italia P69 and as it exits the garage it is the same car but green with white stripe.
We had a lot of fun in the arcade back in the day, along with the N64 version despot the changes! Wasn’t there a rip off version put out by another company?
Magical Golden Shower? Lol. This must have been the adult version I wanna play because mine has Magical Sound Shower. I can't wait to see the stages on the adult version.
Whenever me and my buddy play this game at a local retro arcade whenever we finish the race I always point to the guy without his shirt on and accuse him of ogling him instead of the girls 😅
Cruis'n USA was a cool game I remember my cousins owning a restaurant in the neighborhood back in 95' and they had 7 arcade cabinets in the store. They said they had room for one more and I vouched for this one, so they bought it and it was a hit with customers especially with me because they only let me play free during closing time on Thursday and Saturday nights. Those were the days! 😁
How sweet is that. Never knew anybody to give me free credits (aside from begging my parents for quarters that is) on a machine so that would have been quite the treat
I love a good racing game. I never did like any of the current 3D type up until I got a PS2 and a Gamecube. Absolutely loved the 'Need For Speed' series ( Carbon was my fave ) and many more, some better than others. HOWEVER, my mind was completely blown when I got 'Wreckfest' on Steam; You have to play it to understand just how great this game actually is. Easily my favourite racing game of all time, it features many different tracks and racing parameters that you choose. There's 'Banger' racing where, as the name suggests, a little deliberate crashing does occur Some of the tracks resemble the Hot Wheels racing tracks like loops, sharp turns, and even lanes of traffic aimed right at each other, such as the 'Figure 8'. And there are different, up - grade - able cars and some special vehicles such as the 'Couch Car' ( as I call it , it's literally a couch on wheels with an engine ), a School Bus, Recreational Vehicles, and I think one or two others. Wreckfest, check it out, it's worth it!
Wait a minute...Cruis'n USA came out in 1994? Are you sure about that? I distinctly remember that it didn't hit arcades until late 1995. It was around the time Nintendo pushed their Ultra 64 back as it wasn't ready yet. I also remember all the false advertising going on back then as well. I remember Nintendo telling everyone that Killer Instinct and Cruis'n USA were both running on real N64 hardware in the arcades. That was a huge lie as both arcade cabs had so much expensive cutting edge tech that they cost upwards of $5,000 a piece. I'm pretty sure both games had hard drives in their cabs to help offload all the crazy amounts of data needed for those games. Addendum- I loved Cruis'n USA and Killer Instinct in the arcades. They actually made me want an "Ultra 64" despite already having a Saturn and Playstation. That is until I found out the N64 was a cart based console...then I noped out. I did wind up getting one roughly 6 months after it released.
Nostalgia. I grew up in the middle of nowhere by a lake. A few miles around the lake there was a resort that had a small game room that had this. In the winter we would go swim in their indoor pool and play in the arcade. 🥰
I can recall going to campgrounds as wellAnd they would always have a few arcade games. I used to play Mat mania And some old light gun game which I don't recall the title of
We must not forget that before Cruis'n Blast, there was a version of Cruis'n for the Nintendo Wii, simply called Cruis'n, XD, however, this game was a port of the official game of the fast and furious for arcade by raw thrills, which was quite a Cruis'n game but without the name, and on the Wii, without the license of The fast and furious.
The Crusin’ games were fun but nowhere near the awesomeness of Sega and Namco racers. I dunnno about this running smooth… It definitely runs at 30fps. Music isn’t memorable either. It was just simple and dumb racing fun I was excited for Crusin Blast on Nintendo Switch as I saw how awesome it looked in the arcade but sadly it felt short in the graphics department. The arcade version ran on an GTX 750 Ti Nvidia graphics while the Switch doesn’t. Might n day difference
Can't believe I've fallen so far behind. Well, just more Patman videos for me to watch on such a fun channel. The setup kinda reminded me of the classic Chase HQ game. Was never too good at this one though, but was definitely fun. Narc I was able to finally beat though in more recent years. I remember Raw Thrills. They did Target: Terror, which was fun. They promised a sequel which never came out.
The arcade is one of the most classic games of the 90:s. Just fantastic. The version on Nintendo is not as good. I wish arcade1up would by the license and give us the crusin usa and crusin world. As cargame only crazytaxi can compete.
i throughly enjoyed this video. i loved Crus'n USA on my N64 so much. I think that and Star Fox were my go to games i could just pick up and beat in a session every time. Great balanced games. the music in USA is SO GOOD! even though the arcade version is higher fidelity audio i am partial to the N64 versions of the songs just out of nostalgia. N64 hooked up to my VCR which had a BASS BOOST button was *chef kiss*
I grew up in a rural area. The only arcade we had was at the county fair one week of the year. I vividly remember standing in the crowd of people surrounding the Cruisin USA machine, quarters in my hand waiting for my turn. What an epic game!
It was fun on the country road maps if you used A you could go first person and the windshield would be hit with bugs etc. or you could ride some of the cliffs in the grand canyon and smash the death valley train.
Ha, those selectable songs for Outrun were something else. ;) Outrun, I wish had continues but a classic arcade game. Hard Drivin' was cool, but very tough at first. Crusin' USA was a fun game and a little easier for me than Outrun. Thanks for the great reviews and console versions, Patman!
