I love this game so much. I grew up with MK1,2 and 3 and of course, Killer Instinct but this game was just so much fun to play. I'm happy to have the arcade at home now. There was just no better way to play it! Great video Patman!
On my birthday in 1998, i got the original ps1 (the bulky one) along w/this game. Later on Xmas night, my family & i went to an Xmas party one of my uncles was having. I brought the game to play against my cousins. I was mesmerized seeing Scorpion's fire breath fatality in 3d for the first time 😮
How ironic that you would mention The Oregon Trail. Norman Caruso, known as The Gaming Historian here on YT, just published a 90-minute documentary on that very game.
@@Rjensen2 Obviously you don't know basic grammar when it comes to placing adverbs in a sentence? I am 100% positive based upon your reply, you are the type that uses the contraction don't incorrectly in a sentence Along with using "your" when you are supposed to "you're." Learn elementary grammar, which includes sentence structure, and the proper use of adverbs and contractions.
Congratulations on your success, Pat! I am really proud of you for how your channel has grown and how informative (and comedic!) you make your videos, and hope to meet you someday in one of those conventions if you ever do another one again and hope next time they are around the Northeast, or in the Boston/Cape Cod area!
It’s a good thing that Deadly Alliance got made after the arcade quadrilogy!!!! After 4, Ed and the gang moved onto consoles and they’re going strong!!!
4 plays better than stiff ass deadly alliance. Content wise the 3d games were great but gameplay wise I was definitely not a fan, give me an mk4 that has solid smooth gameplay and movement despite its goofy graphics, weird sound effects and hilarious character endings over that tin man movement deadly alliance, deception and Armageddon had any day
Ouch. Why? It's so crappy compared to the originals or the later ones (Deadly Alliance, Deception). There's a reason why MK pretty much vanished for half a decade after this shitty failure. Just like Street Fighters and others they jumped on 3D without any clue or understanding how it works just because Crapshinden did and it shows.
@@ChickenMcThiccken skill issue? ignorwnce? deception was was better than mk4, i don't even talk about anything past that anyway, 10 was the beginning of the woke crap. 4 still sucked and killed the franchise alongside the idiotic mythologies and other spin offs
Another amazing documentary on a less than beloved entry in the MK franchise. Interesting info about the historical moment and specially about the MK Gold, which is the definitive MK4 version, IMO. Keep up the good work, Pat! 👍👍
I was fresh out of high school when at community college. At the time I would go to the local mall when malls had arcades and it was Tilt(And before that it was Aladdin's Castle) My high school friend worked there and he said hey we're getting in mortal Kombat 4. I said oh my God that's awesome. He said you can be one of the first ones to play it. One of the best moments of my life lol
I'm tripping out right now... Like... I would've been a little kid to you probably but I remember the layout of where some of the games were in there dude. And I remember there was one dude that could pretty much speed run killer instinct when it first came out... He had a long ass pony tail and a big tribal tattoo on his calf.... It was the first big black work tribal tattoo I had ever seen.... That mall is where I grew up.
@@Mohawk_Productions I'm in MI these days but my best friend from literal elementary school still lives there and that area specifically isn't terrible. I think the thing there really has been more the usual problems of urban sprawl like crime etc but cost of living in KY can vary wildly too cuz last time I was in KY I was in Corbin which is on the tn border and it's an entirely different economy than Florence up near Cincinnati... Corbin was dirt cheap but there is crushingly little work as far as good career type jobs. Hell Corbin was a dry county until about ten years ago if that tells you anything. So yeah my best advice is to be specific if you're looking into going to KY cuz it really does vary so much within a kind of small state.
One thing highly worth mentioning on MK Gold for Dreamcast is there actually 2 versions. The launch version had the print on disk in gold and was HEAVY with bugs. The game was later rereleased with the "Hot New" sticker on the cover, and the print on the disk was red, not gold. This had a LOT (but not all) of the bugs fixed, and is way better to play than the lanch version.
I saw you twice at the MGC but you were busy and I didn't want to bug you while you were enjoying your moment with the creators on artist alley. I was going to tell you that we were Wrestling Classic buddies. Maybe next year!
MK4 character Quan Chi: Beats opponent to death using the victim's own leg. Dave Lister of Red Dwarf: 'Shut up or I'll beat you to death with the wet end!' Connection? Coincidence? Could this be an instance where someone got 'inspired' by some random line in a BBC TV Sci - fi / Comedy show? For those of you not aware, I'm quoting Dave Lister from a scene where he needed fingerprint ID to open a door. He grabbed an arm of some deceased person to use on a fingerprint scanner. Who comes up with this stuff, eh? I love your videos, Patman. Thanks.
I have always wondered one thing about the entire MK franchise. "How do they come up with the ideas for the Fatalities?" Do the programmers sit around a table eating pizza and think of the most disgusting, vile, and gruesome way somebody can be killed?
You pretty much nailed it haha. Now days, they pretty much have a “Fatality team” that comes up with several fatality ideas for each character, presents them to Ed Boon, and he chooses which 2 he likes the most for each character.
Very much worth the wait my friend! That’s the most fatalities I’ve watched consecutively ever lol! I’ve always thumbed up your vids but I’ll make sure to comment more also, and now you know me!!! ❤️🎮😎
Shinnok was very underwhelming as a final boss and it didn't help that he was playable from the get go. The best thing about MK4 were the unintentionally hilarious endings. Edit: as a paranormal investigator, I have to say I appreciated your reference to a spirit box which most people will probably not know what that is.
Funny Shinok was a underwhelming boss in MKX too..And his Severed Head is flat out embarrassing In Mk 11..Looks like Geoffrey Rush in silent agony in a cave for every scene..He is a Bum!
Another great video, Patman! I remember seeing this at my local drive-in back in the day and had a go of it. This was also the same night I saw the trailer for Jason Vs. Freddy...
I never played War Gods, thanks for the helpful History of MK4, Patman! The Polygons show their age, but gameplay can still be fun for the older, box-edged character games. MK1 used to be my long-time favorite, but MK11 is great too. Thanks!
Great Retrospective on Mortal Kombat 4. The PC version was one of the few games I tested out on my first 3D Gfx Card. The PS1 version had a major disadvantage compared to the N64 and PC versions, Shang Tsung was the PS1 Achilles heel as the game would freeze every time he morphed and it totally killed the vibe. Thanks to the N64 ROM Cartridge and PC HDD Install it was seamless experience.
Honestly never cared for Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, etc but you make things very interesting giving the history behind them. I do love watching the Arcade version and then seeing the transition to home consoles or handhelds. Great video!
Awesomeness good for you QC. Wish I made it this year. PAX east made me overspend two shows. It's all good though. Much love from the Boston finish line as I type this
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I told you and the offer still stands. Just bought a brand new 2023 45 Foot RV as my "they finally are leaving for college gift"....if you ever need to attend/visit anything east coast im ten minutes south of Boston and your more than likely to stay in the RV while you visit. Don't worry it's got a custom edit suite/area so you can edit/surf while you vacation. Please be our guest anytime. Just make sure if you take it down the road to grab a squishee you take wide right turns lol.....I did the math she will allow one PATMANQC and up to 66 lady friends all at once with stripper pole support. 31 only if the COSPLAY. If anyone asks tell em it's a lighting rod.....I'll never tell
@@NEStalgia1985 LOL if I ever make it out that way my friend I may just have to take you up on that offer. I've only been to Boston once but I did get to go duck pin and candle pin bowling.
Despite how much of a bad rep MK4 has received over the years, I still love it, and my son and I actually play it quite often on my N64! I remember my uncle taking my brother and I to our local arcade the day MK4 came out. We got there early, like 20 minutes before the arcade opened. The gate was still pulled down, but we could still see into the arcade, and spotted the 2 brand spanking new MK4 arcade cabinets set up in the middle of the floor. The manager who was inside at the time, I guess overheard mine and my brother’s excitement, and actually came over, unlocked the gate, and let us in early so we could be the first to play it!! Good times.
1997 was just an odd year with me and fighting games where I just wasn't satisfied with any of them between this, King Of Fighters 97 or Street Fighter 3: New Generation even though the graphics looked good. This was also when I went on a long hiatus with the MK series and had no desire to play any other 3D versions until they went back to the traditional gameplay with MK9. I had this for a few months on N64 until I traded the system and all my games in for a Playstation 1 to play Symphony Of The Night and Metal Gear Solid. This isn't a bad game but it just never felt like Mortal Kombat to me and now that you explained the connection with War Gods then that's why this game never gelled with me because it's based on that. That was amazing you got a shout out by NBA Jam Tim Kitzrow! 😊
The best of the saga, in my opinion, is the 2nd installment! But I absolutely wanted to leave a like anyway because when it's Patman Time YOU KNOW it's gonna be a great time for sure!!! How about a Metal Slug documentary? Is it on your personal list? Thank you very much Pat! Have a nice saturday evening and a peaceful sunday!! P.S. that Tim Kitzrow cameo really is.......... BOOMSHAKALAKAAAAA!!!! 🤣🤣
Eurocom also attempted to add an extra boss character named Belokk to MK Gold for the Dreamcast. There were even in-game pictures of him in Game Informer magazine. Alas Midway made Eurocom remove him entirely ...
Reiko's ending caused a stir back then, some people thought he was Shao Kahn unmasked. The creators behind Mortal Kombat Deception had some fun w/this in the game's Konquest mode. There is a side mission where Shao Kahn finds out Reiko tries on his helmet when no one is around.
I had no idea MK Gold on Dreamcast was a port of MK4, for some reason. Also love that you shared video of you playing the arcade game recently. Any time I watch your videos...I'm glad I did.
thanks for the cool videos, i enjoy watching the retro games. i had a question for you, i noticed on the video you didnt have use of your arms. i had a stroke and lost the use of my right arm, i was curious how you played games, what u used, that sort of thing. i got the ps1 one handed controller, and the xbox 1 adaptive controller, but im just looking for something that works for me better. keep up the good work with your videos, thanx
I love mk4! Thank you for this video! Mk4 impressed because most 3d fighters at the time was slow and bulky feeling. They made it fast, fluid and scary to me lol.
Loved this game back in the day on my PS1, especially the endings, some lead into others so the story made more sense, but most of all, I always thought Goro looked like her was a Plushie, like made out of felt.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries yeah sounds like fun. I still miss Arcades...even with them taking me to the cleaners as far as pocket change goes lol.
I've always felt this one got a bit of a bad rap. Yeah, it's nowhere near as good as the first three overall, but it's got a goofy charm to it. Good video, Patman, as always!
To play as Meat, you have to choose Group Mode and win a match as each character. This must be done consecutively (i.e., you can't lose a single time). I don't remember if single player matches count or if you need to do it in two player mode. Also, Kitana's model and code is leftover in the arcade, PC, and Nintendo 64 versions (the PlayStation port only has her code). You can even play as her in the PC and Nintendo 64 games through cheat software (e.g., using a GameShark). The Dreamcast port/upgrade *would* have been the best version if it wasn't for all the bugs it has. Supposedly, the "Hot! New!" re-release fixed many of the bugs while still being (at least a bit) glitchy.
Interesting revisit, sir. However, I wish you brushed upon the topic that Belokk was a cut character during development that was meant to be the Sub-Boss for Mortal Kombat 4, similar to Goro, Kintaro, and Motaro. If properly brought back under the right circumstances, I think Belokk would be a breath of fresh air in the lore of Mortal Kombat.
Great retrospective as always pat. I wish I had tmnt opportunity to play the dreamcast version. It looks really good but the ps one was great as well. ☝️🙌✨️
im bit confuse here when u mentioned john tobias's cam coder was used to capture motions for MK1 but i have read that it was ed boon's father's cam coder, or maybe my memory is fuzzy
Big fan of Mortal Kombat made me move over to SEGA back in the day. Not Sonic, but Mortal Kombat! i owned the Game Gear original Mortal Kombat in 1993 & that looked better than the Game Boy Color Mortal Kombat 4 which came out 1998!! i don't think i ever played this in the arcades crazy enough, but i did play Mortal Kombat 4 on the N64. It wasn't until Mortal Kombat 10 when i would re-visit the game due to Jason Voorhees being in it. However, i do still go back to play 1-4 quite a bit & i love all the cartoons & live action movies on it.
I liked the last live action movie. People give me all kinds of crap for it but I could care less. I enjoyed it for what was. Mortal Kombat 10 was another fantastic entry
NewTeks Lightwave and VideoToaster were the go to tech for the Babylon 5 tv series as well. Most likely, the models for this game were created on a commodore Amiga then as well.
The first 2 games are still in my top 10 favorite games ever. They lost me with 3, the automatic combos ruined the game for me. This one was ok though, the endings were hilarious.
Interesting the first version they released to acrades didn't have any bosses or endings! Seems more like something a game company would try to pull today. :-P
That intro was amazing!!! I love NBA Jams! Say, have you ever covered the dirty version of NBA Jams for the Snes before Patman? If you haven't had the chance to check it out, I strongly urge you to do post haste. Just picture the NBA Jams guy cursing like a drunken sailor while he's announcing a game, and you will get the idea. Fun Fact- Apparently, during the recording of NBA Jams Tournament Edition for the Snes, the announcer started saying, "Get that sh*t outta here!" when a player packs the ball (bats it away). The developers thought it was hilarious and tried to keep it in. Unfortunately, Nintendo wasn't having any of it, so they killed the idea. Thankfully, not before the developers made a "dirty version" of the game. Copies of the dirty version have been found and dumped for all to enjoy/use.
Yes, check out my history of NBA jam. I even asked Tim about it when I met him. There was only two lines that he recorded that made it into the XXX version of the game. Thanks
