Same.... But in the last ten years,I discovered more games than during the 90s. Just use mame..a arcade cabinet..and check best of mame video. A lot of great old games exist and it s a superbe real hype when you play them on arcade.
@@Sam-Lawry Yeah, there is always MAME, but I'm referring to the arcade experience. People crowding around the machine watching people perform the new moves, fatalities etc.
@@ragnakak Of course. But now..at home with some friends you can have the feeling. I bought a Blast city few years ago..and it's the best way to play on arcade games.
I watched the movie when I was 11 but it was rated PG 13 or A or something and I needed an adult lol. Remember being fondly not disappointed by the movie which is rare for a video game movie.
Best game in the whole franchise. The vibe and style of this is unbeatable. Music, design, characters. 10/10. Still gives me chills to this day. A masterpiece of a game.
I remember seeing this at the mall way back in the 90's and my mind was blown. I remember being in awe of how dark the tone was, and the mystery of the new characters and new levels. No internet so you just had to hang around and watch people play, and read up on your EGM/Gamepro, etc.
When MK 2 hit arcades we’re packed and everyone stood around it. I’d walk to the arcade with one dollar and stay for hours after spending it just to watch it in play. I’d go to the movies with my family and sneak out to go play it mid-movie. It’s my absolute favorite game of all time.
Nowadays that EA bullshit would be giving them half the game. Then you can't play it until the patch update. Then pay for the second half of the game because it's DLC.
Yeah that was super lame, an arcade machine would been fairly cheap compared what the law suit almost turned into of 10 million. Sure they lost, but if they hadn't that would been a major ass beating over what could been a much cheaper pay out. I assume he didn't have it in writing as why they lost.
@@roguerifter9724 right it's funny becouse mk1 machines where everywhere went roller skating and seen it for the first time next thing I knew it was right next to sf2 at my local hobby shop
I still remember walking into an Arcade at my Mall and seeing this smack dab in the front. Huge crowd around it. Quarters on the lower part of the monitor so you knew who was next. There were rules at Arcades that ALL gamers followed.
Reptile was great, but what really blew me away, was that you could be Shang Tsung, and you could literally morph in to everyone, use their moves, and preform their fatalities. To me, he was very much over powered, in a sense . That’s why I always used him..lol
@@Krooksbane one of the greatest fatality ability was to use Sub-Zero's deep freeze, then morph into someone else and do their finishing move on the frozen loser. This included using Reptile's head eater fatality... something I liked to call a "cold lunch."
MK2 was one of those cabinets that were an experience larger than life, up to the point it was released i had not been blown away like that by a cabinet since Space Harrier.
I remember asking for advancements on my allowance just so I could go to the local arcade and play this bad boy. What an absolutely phenomenal game in all respects. Kind of sad to hear that Daniel Pesina got shafted the way he did, though.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries it was big everywhere! I remember it was like the top game at the time, everyone was so excited about it, including me, my 9 year old self.😁
When I was in a computer trade school after high school, the local arcade was lucky enough to have one of the beta machines. It was missing a lot of stuff that would be in the later revisions, but we got to play MK II before a lot of others. And the bosses were BRUTALLY hard!
I fondly remember successfully lobbying my mom to take me to Venture (a now defunct department store chain like Target) first thing in the morning on launch day to pick up the Super Nintendo version. Sure enough, the guy in the game department opened up a shipping box and I laid hands on one of only two copies. Good times.
Ultimate 3. That's the game. 2 is great though, too. So glad i was able to pick up an arcade 1up cabinet with all 3 of the first mk games on it. A prized possession. Cherished.
Agreed...and I would also like to see Castlevania games reviewed in the future. I absolutely Love Castlevania. My personal favorite is CV3 Dracula's curse (Nes) 😁 but also love all Castlevania games.
I have been waiting for this Pat, and you delivered! MK II has to be one of my favourite arcade games of all time! I also have a MK II Arcade1Up and it’s awesome! ❤️
The Arcade 1 Up machines are JUNK. Those screens are shitty for starters. The games are also LAGGY. I know the difference as I spent tons of hours with the original arcade units. I was so good back in the day, I still remain undefeated by ANYONE. That is how good I was at MK II.
scooter McG I am having no issues with my cabinet! It’s arcade perfect in my opinion! That’s the first I have heard about lag in an A1U, tons of people like me are having no problems at all!
Darth Grumpy Totally entitled to your opinion for sure, however I am loving Arcade1Up! For starters I am having no issues with lag at all, speed wise is perfect in my opinion! And the graphical filters may differ only a lightly from the arcade but replicates it extremely well! Of course it isn’t going to feel like a properly built arcade cabinet as they are classed as a toy and are made for a wider demographic, I can sense that you may be an arcade purist meaning that you may not get on with it well and are used to having more solid controls, which is fair! But it’s great value for what it is and was fun to build and to play in the comfort of my own home!
I love this channel! Just got a couple of my friends to check it out and they're showing their kids some of these awesome games and the history behind them. Keep up the great work!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries You should do a video about GWAR being in that insanely hard BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD game :-D A game I never could beat 😂 Like that damn Simpson's alien invasion game...
Great work again Patman, these episodes keep getting better and better, I really enjoy them. And I'm not alone, seeing how the channel grows, congrats !!!
If only you knew how many times I open my youtube hoping to see something new from you...everyday without is such a pain...I really enjoy what you do @PatmanQC
Great video. I got to meet Mr. Daniel Master Pesina along with other cast members, and he is indeed the nicest super down to earth person with a tremendous humble personality. He is so approachable and easy to talk to.
The specialized magazines, that at that time the only source of information about videogames, released guides with the moves that made the hype even bigger, with many kids taking them to the arcades. The MS-DOS version was a turning point for PC gaming, previously the great majority of PC version of arcade games used to very inferior to console ones or other computers, things changed after MK II.
A few years before the MK Arcade Kollection was released on PSN, there was a standalone MKII PSN release from 2008. It also had online play, and for some reason the sound volume was freakin' loud! …This was another awesome video, congratulations!
so many hours spent playing this in the mall arcade. a youth pastor, that was a great gamer, would have a line of challengers waiting to take him on at that arcade. great memories. great video as always. thanks Patman!!!
Genesis version was the one i grew up on and will be my favorite. I liked how that version didnt have those cheesy voices when you were to say uppercut someone. It was just a standard sound albeit used for all males but it wasnt a big deal. And as far as missing frames, the only thing that i can recall back was how for example Baraka's winning pose had him bowing and not coming back up showing his face. I very much preferred him remaining bowed.
LOL, I only ever saw fight break out one time and that was back around the time Pac-Man came out. One guy actually gave the other guy a piledriver on the floor but luckily his head didn't hit the ground
Im happy your vids have been popping up. I have a cheap arcade deck with most of these games you talk about, its making me play through every single one! Great channel!
Thank you for this!!! Love your videos so much and I love MK! I have all the original fully restored arcade machines in my living room lol! Wanted to mention that Daniel Pesina is a really awesome dude. Had the pleasure of meeting him at a show and taking pictures with him. He was cool about it the whole time and had no problem getting in character for the sake of his fans! I would happily contribute and support him in anything he does in the future.
It absolutely is the best one especially if it's installed on hard drive with the proper soundcard. Number three just seemed to really water down as far as the violence and fatalities
I spent all my graduation money playing this in the arcade. Great memories. I have the Arcade 1Up version now and love it but you have to add some 3 inch furniture lifts to the corners since it's a pretty short machine.
Good I remember playing strangers on the MK cabinet when I was a teen. You’d get to know people and the excitement of crowd surrounding you on the day finally honed your skills enough to win a round against the local champion. After getting MK11, then watching the recent film I ended up picking up the Midway Legacy cabinet with this MK and MK3 ultimate. Can’t wait to get all nostalgic and I try to remember scorpions “get over here.”
I still remember the first time I saw the Kintaro fatality in the arcade. I thought it was a hacked cabinet or something, until I found out it was an update to the game that added it. We'd go down to the grocery store and write down the moves from the magazines, so we'd have more money to play the game. Lol.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I think it was the final kit, the 3.0. You have to play as Shang Tsung. Hold the LP button the ENTIRE match, then release it when you win, and he'll morph into Kintaro and punch you in half. I thought I was legit seeing things the first time I saw it happen.
@@Dorelaxen Okay, yes that was Shang Tsung's second fatality. I was confused and thought you could play as Kintaro and then do a fatality. Thanks for clarifying :-)
Did you ever find any info on if the game was originally meant to be named "Immortal Kombat" during development? Not sure if that was another urban legend or not... Also, aas Ermac, the red ninja in Mortal Kombat 2?
The rumor of Ermac started in MK1, It was teased in MK2 by Jade with a message that reads "Ermac Who" and when you beat the game you can get a message that reads "Ceamr Odse Nto Exists" or "Ermac Does Not exists. Red Robin was also another all red ninja that was rumored to be in MK2 as an April Fools joke by EGM.
You're actually wrong about MK being the idea of Ed Boon. John Tobias pitched the idea & Ed initially turned him down. Ed's role of "co-creator" was due to him making Tobias & Pesina's ideas a playable product.
One of the greatest fighting games of all time. Its still incredibly fun but god that ai was ruthless. Sub Zero and Johnny Cage were my favourites to use. Pretty much love everything about the game. Love the attention to detail with the research too.
I like playing with pretty much every character in the game but scorpion and subzero were my favorites along with Shang Tsung so I could morph and do different fatalities. Thanks for the nice words, glad you enjoy my research :-)
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries No problem. I think the fatalities in this game are the best in the series along with the music, stage design and secrets. Its really a big step up from the original.
@@evanhanley6437 Yes, I agree. I don't know what they were trying to go for with Mortal Kombat three But it just didn't work. The fatalities especially were weak. For example you could do a fatality and that person would explode and nine rib cages and arms and legs that looked like they were from a dummy would pop off. Not sure if they felt the pressure to sanitize the game from up above or what? I've never been able to find an answer for it. I also didn't like the inclusion of the run button. Number two is still the best in my opinion
I feel like it must be either trying to sanitize, or they simply tried to add too much stuff with limited memory and it all suffered because of it. There did seem like a trend where they sanitized the series, but the most recent console versions (like 10 and the latest 11) have some serious gore in them. The combat engine is also greatly improved. They're a treat for oldschool MK fans.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries - Yo Patman, you forgot to mention Shang Tsung's 3rd fatality where he morphed into Kintaro for the kill. Great video, just the same. I also played all of the arcade ROM revisions, growing up. Mortal Kombat 9 on PS3 is really good, too. Those 2 are my favorite entries in the series. Too bad the series got woke & went guest character crazy. I wanted more returning MK characters like Nitara. They even ruined Kano & Sonya..... so sad. Kabal seems pretty cool in MK11, so that's something.
Great video..I was absolutely obsessed with Mk2 and Ultimate Mk3.. I was the perfect age for a boy when these gems hit the arcades. I was born in 85 so by the early and mid 90's I was in my prime age for arcade fighting games. 😀
It could've been a classic if they didn't make the enemy AI impossible to beat without cheesing it, what an input-reading pile of crap. I shudder to think about all the time I wasted trying to beat Kintaro and Shao Khan on the SNES.
Growing up in the 90s meant that when I went to the mall as a kid I actually got to spend a ton of time in arcades. Mortal Kombat cabs were ALWAYS surrounded by people being hype af! Good times. Sometimes I wish I could go back.
PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries Maybe those dislikes were from guys who couldn’t input the fatality codes right...come and think of it, I’d better check to see if I hit the right key! 😸
you forgot about the stand alone mk2 release on the playstation 3 that was on the psn a few years ago and it has arcade perfect gameplay and online play.
I didn't think I needed to add that one considering I covered the arcade collection which had all three with perfect online play. Please let me know if I forgot anything else in your opinion
Great video! I remember that in the arcades this game was always surrounded by a lot of people. Being able to play it was a big challenge, because it was mostly ruled by the more skilled players. Anyway, i think it's the best in the series too.
Your description of the kind of player who wanted the Game Boy port was apt. Coming from personal experience, that game specifically was bought by permissive parents of real jerk kids so they can take it to school and lord it over all their classmates at recess. Oh yeah, they were TOTALLY going to let you play it if you did them a favor.
Sorry to say but it was the brainchild of John Tobias. Also John pitched his idea to Daniel Pesina and friends. Then they had a talk with Ed Boon about it.
I remember the circulating rumors of the “cuss code”, “nudity code”, being able to throw your opponent into the Portal as a secret stage fatality, being able to unlock Kano and Sonya.....and just how gullible we were back then and actually believed them 🤣
Excellent video Pat! Love me some classic old school Mortal Kombat. I have three ports of Mortal Kombat II in my collection, for the Mega Drive, SNES and Sega Saturn. The game is just an all time classic.
When this cab came out, it took ALL the attention in a sea of other cabs! The artwork was sick and the sound, the BASS from this cab was unreal! ALL you heard was the MKII cab despite ALL those other cabs attracts modes. Even the Arcade 1UP cab with 1 speaker rocks the crap out of you!
I imagine this being the voice of a slightly younger version of this dude named Kerry who used to own this local store, but he is no longer the owner. Best way to keep the memory alive while talking about a cool subject. Thank you my friend. Good video. Love the humor.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries hey no problem my friend. As much as I love the original arcade version of Mortal Kombat 2 the best, the AI opponents are terrible. I'm not a big fan of having to spam the same set of moves to out cheat the cheating. The Sega Genesis is my second best option when it comes to decent AI in single player imo. Other than that, love that game the best. That's why I have both versions ha.
I miss being so excited for a new game like i was when this came out. I absolutely had to get my hands on this as soon as it hit super nintendo. Good times. Great video sir
This video brings back so many good memories!! The game consumed a plenty of my quarters!! Arcade gaming is IMO the best gaming experience you can experience. Wish that would make a comeback!!
I remember the ads in magazines and posters for the symbol codes for the SNES and Genesis ports of ths game. Maybe im thinking of MK 3. This game still holds up well today. Great video!
I was just hanging out in the Superstition Mountains in Arizona, where I live. There is an old ghost town tourist attraction called Goldfield that has an old west saloon/restaurant. I took my kids there last weekend and what did we see at the front entrance? An original MKII arcade cabinet! It brought back a lot of memories!
Oh my, the nostalgia flowing within my 37 yr old body. 10 years old I got this for my birthday, I knew everything about this game and this was before RU-vid's time.
Still the greatest game in history. I’d NEVER seen - before or since - arcades THAT packed with players than it was for MKII. Just crowds of people watching and waiting for their turn. It had such an impact on me that I bought an original dedicated MKII machine.
PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries Actually, send me an email address. I edited an ultimate version of the MKII live action commercial. I’ll send it to you. It’s epic!
