For KDE's history, we begin at the beginning, a little before it's true inception in 1996, and take you up to the RC1 of Plasma 6 in late January of 2024.

Oh man. I remember when KDE 4 came out. Boy was it bad! There were so many bugs. And the performance was horrendous. Just like Linus, I also switched to Gnome, then stayed with MATE up until very recently. I finally gave KDE another shot starting in 2020 and have been very happy with how it turned out.

3 was my jam, 4 scared me away and 5 brought me back. Knowing what I know now, I wish I would have stuck around until 4.2. That was the "it got good" point and I think I probably would have had an entirely different outlook on the whole thing. -Leo

As a daily Kubuntu user, this video was very interesting and informative

Great history of KDE, particularly interesting to hear the background behind the KDE 4.0 release. I was already a GNOME user at that time having started with Ubuntu Linux 2007, but I was but off trying KDE by the negative reporting of it in the Linux press, and those I was in contact with in the Linux community. Still to this day I've never really given KDE Plasma in it's current form a long go as my main Desktop, having been a Mate user since I changed over to Linux Mint when Ubuntu went all UNITY on us. Although I'm currently running LMDE on this laptop so am using Cinnamon when mobile, although the Static PC is still running Mint 21.3 with Mate. PS I enjoy these shorter video's as they fit better with my viewing schedule, the full 90-120+ minutes of the full show is a bit long in all one sitting.

Thank you! I've always compared KDE 4.0 to Windows Vista because I was under the same general impression as everyone else. "4.0 is a major stable release and is ready for general use." but it wasn't until 4.2 that was actually the case. Looking back, it's hard to blame folks for the perception. If you're ever in search of another desktop, Plasma really *is* worth a try. It's surprised me over and over again since 2018. And these days, especially on Wayland, it's giving GNOME a real run for its money. To your PS: I'm glad the singles are serving their purpose. Those are the bits made specifically for youtube/peertube. -Leo

I love KDE and I like XFCE for lesser hardware. KDE was always the sexiest DE, but was also the highest maintenance for a while - with lots of buggy behavior (not unlike a beautiful woman). But 5 has really gotten it's shyt together, and 6 just sounds wonderful - according to Nicco ;-)

Interesting and informative. Have been mostly, like 90% of the time KDE user, especially for past 5y+. OpenSUSE for over 20 years, and Tumbleweed from it's early months. KDE is heavier, a little, compared to GNOME, but much more versatile and options to configure.

I knew it existed, wish I had started using Linux before to experience KDE 4 and all the discussions.

You may not have seen 3.5 to 4.0, but at least we get to experience 5.27 to 6.0! Sure, It's not the same, but Plasma on Wayland crushes the 5 display setup with mixed DPI, and that's something I would've never imagined possible back in the 3.5 days.

I really can't blame you. Gnome's implementation leaves a little on the table for me since I've been needing fractional scaling. Plasma just does it better. And it keeps growing on me! -Leo
