Hello lovelies, I have been buying lots of vintage lipstick on eBay and thought it would be fun to talk about the history of lipstick. Most of my collection is from the 1950s and 1960s. I may have one lipstick from the 1930s, but I am not 100% sure. I would love to collect some older lipstick from the 1920s. Let me know what your favorite decade is for lipstick.

1884 AD
A French perfume company named Guerlain became the first company to produce lipstick commercially. Their lipstick was made with deer tallow, beeswax, and castor oil wrapped in a silk paper.
1915
Lipsticks in cylindrical containers were invented by Maurice Levy.
1920s
By 1920, lipstick had made a permanent place in the daily lives of women. In 1923, James Bruce Mason Jr. invented the swivel up lipstick tube and gave us modern lipstick as we know it today. The fashion icons of the day were the silent era movie stars, and people re-created their dark lips. Plums, aubergines, cherries, dark reds, and browns were the most sought after colors in the 1920s.
Helena Rubenstein invented the cupid’s bow lipstick that promised to give the coveted shape to the lips. Women also used stencils to achieve the desired cupid’s bow shape of the lips.
It was also in the 1920s that the first wave of feminism came about and women demanded more rights including the right to vote. Lipsticks at that time were considered a symbol of feminism.
It was also during this era that French Chemist Paul Baudercroux invented lipstick Rouge Baiser which was supposed to be ‘kiss-proof’ but was quickly taken off the shelf as women found it difficult to get rid off. Companies like Chanel, Guerlain, Elizabeth Arden, and Estée Lauder, started selling lipsticks.
1930s
Lipstick was still popular during the depression in the 1930s.
After the jazz baby era of the 1920s, 1930s was all about elegant and matte finishes. Max Factor started selling lip glosses and became a huge hit among the masses as earlier it was only reserved for Hollywood actresses. Hit by the depression, lipstick was an affordable luxury for the women in this era. Deep plum and burgundy were some of the preferred shades of this era.
1940s
Going through the perils of the Second World War, women in the 1940s took to laborious jobs with men at war frontiers. The supplies of all materials were scarce, and as for lipsticks, the metal tubes were temporarily replaced with plastic and paper. Women were encouraged to wear reddest of the lips to boost morale during the grim time of the war. Besame’s American Beauty was one of the most popular shades of red.
1950s
This was the era when Hollywood glam icons such as Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor were setting the trends all over the world. Women wanted to look like their favorite Hollywood actresses, and lipstick was popular than ever. Bold red lips were especially popularized by Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor and women in 1950s embraced the trend. Estee Lauder’s Envious was one of the popular shades.
It was also during this era; Hazel Bishop successfully came up with a ‘kiss-proof’ lipstick. Soon enough, ‘Revlon’ came up with their range of smudge-proof lipsticks and then began the war of brands started.
1960s-1970s
Lipstick drew inspiration from arts, and popular culture and a variety of shades came and went from the fashion scene. There was something to suit everybody’s preference. In 1973 Bonnie Bell introduced, ‘Lip Smackers,’ that is lipstick with flavors. These became an instant hit with the younger crowd.

Laura, the first vintage "lipstick" container you show is actually a perfume vial bullet from the company Evyan. My grandmother passed along the exact same bullet to me but I do have the little glass and metal perfume vial still inside! The fragrance is very old and definitely not my style, but it is a really interesting vintage perfume anyways. Happy to send along a pic if interested.

The brand Coty was found in every drugstore around me. The brand is very dear to me. My first memories of the brand were at a local, Drugstore/Soda Fountain. The shop served Soda Fountain classics, until the late 1980's. My Mother would take me there for a Malted and I would absorb the sight of the lovely cosmetics. Pan makeup (foundation), cake mascara, pretty compacts and Coty Lipsticks could be found there. In my teen years, my favorite, everday red, was Tomato Red by Coty. It remained my go to lipstick, until the 1990's. Coty Lipstick was removed from stores and I miss that formula dearly :(.

I too loved Coty range of lipsticks and eye shadows in the 1970s early 80s , when I started my nursing career in Oct 1970 , the Nurse Tutor in my School of Nursing , said to me on noticing my eye makeup , Nurse Craig have you got bruised eyes , my skillfully applied Mary Quant eye shadow pallet of 3 Autumnal colours of kharki , lichen and dull yellow , were obviously not to her taste , whilst I felt a million dollars Lol , wonderful memories of a happy 17year old me , starting out in my chosen career , and here I am as a 67year old , still enjoying my makeup , and loving all these wonderful videos on RU-vid about vintage makeup and lipsticks !!!

My first lipstick was in 1971 from Yardley. I was only a preteen and I loved it so much. It was a frosted warm pink called Strawberry. Lipsticks sold in drugstores back then were traditional metal tubes and they were so lovely and fun. It was a challenge to find a shade that worked for light olive skin like mine so you had to experiment a little. But it was so much fun to shop for.

Lis ! Right now I’m loving Defy & Inspire’s shade Fearless. You can find it at Target. It’s a cool toned, blue based red. I’m not sure if you’re partial to cool tones, but for me it goes well with my coloring year round. I’m light to medium olive depending on the season.

But my favorites lipsticks where Yardley lipsticks, and also the whole line of makeup 💄, I remember Jean Shrimpton was the image for that line of makeup 💄 then.

Loved your video , very educational and interesting information , I remember my mother always wore a very red pillar box colour made Elizabeth Arden , sold in Robinson and Cleavers a large department store in Belfast NI . she only ever bought the refills , they fitted into a beautiful solid silver , heavily engraved with naked ladies all around the case , it was absolutely delightful , I remember it well and with it she kept a cotton hankerchief printed all over with red lipsticks , this she also kept in her handbag and used it to dab her lips when required , I still have both these items , thank you for invoking treasured memories , I also bought an unused lipstick case from a vintage fair some years ago , it has a chocolate brown engine turned exterior and the top is one large pearl surrounded by tiny turquoise beads , so pretty , I use it to keep my precious pieces of gold and Arizona Sleeping Beauty Turquoise jewellery !! Thank you so much for sharing .

Hi Laura, I remember the brown Coty compact with the lipstick when I was a little girl. The white with blue stripes Sharon Tate I remember too. They also made an orange/white tube similar to the blue/white one. I went to the neighbor's garage sale when I was in 2nd grade and I got the white lipstick that was in style in the late 60s kind of a mod color at the time, and I wore it. My mother about died laughing at me because I liked it which it probably was old too. :) I remember the Avon lady lippy samples that were white tiny tubes One thing I remember in the early 1990s when you could buy Max Factor in the US still and they made metal lipstick cases even then. When I was in about 4th grade, about 1977 all of us girls had Bonnie Bell lipglosses. They were in huge sticks in Bubblegum, Watermelon, and Butterscotch. I do not know of the lipstick from the 1930s. I could not make out the name. Maybe on Pinterest if you look up the name you could possibly find an advertisement that matches it to date it. I kind of went down memory late here! I love your collection it is wonderful!! :) Becki

You can fix any tube of lip stick that won't go up. The outer metal case slides off the tube exposing the inner works of the tube, you can then re set the tube so that the lip stick will move up and down again. Once you have it working, slide the outer tube back in place till it clicks and you will have a working lip stick. I fix mine that way all the time. If you wish to use the tubes over with fresh modern lip stick put in in the freezer till its hard then pull the bullet of lip stick out and replace with a new favorite.

Another informative video! ❤️ Btw, “vintage” is something that was made 20+ years ago; it’s a combination of the words “vingt,” for 20, and “age”. “Retro” is the reproduction of a vintage item; think of “retrograde” - moving backwards.

Hi Laura. Wonderful video. I adore the 1950's for lipsticks. I think Revlon and Avon made so many gorgeous shades. They remain my favorite brands. Laura, I saw the word “Evyan “ on the bottle and also the shape of whatever it was that went into the base of it and thought it looked like a tiny bottle of “Most Precious” perfume would fit right in there! So I googled Evyan “Most Precious “ and saw it for sale! I had this in high school in the late sixties as well as their other perfume called White Shoulders! This must have been a little travel size and I remember seeing it in department stores in the sixties!

My discontinued lipstick was from the 1980's by Max Factor called Metal Light. I was so frantic that I had Three Custom Colors make a dupe from what remained in the tube but it wasn't the same colour or texture. I have bought so many trying to replicate it. :( City had great textured lipsticks. A vintage cheapie brand from the 1980's in Canada called Caroline. They had some good shades. Haven't seen them since.

Yes Mary Quant was a very big seller back in 60’s she came in during the British Invasion along with Twiggy and sold these lipsticks in Potts and were very popular she called them her potted jams and they came in all Color’s her most popular color was a deep blackish purple that was her best seller back in the sixties l was in Jr high at the time and Yardley came out with lipsticks and they called them Slicker’s because if you wanted to you could lay them over your lipstick for a gloss effect slickers Color’s were all very light and shimmery were you could wear them plain or as a gloss brings back fond memories of my youth and the British bands ❤️
