Most equate anaesthesia with general anaesthesia. www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-an...
This is likely because the introduction of general anaesthesia (1847) pre-dated that of local anaesthesia (1884). The drugs used for these first demonstrations, ether and cocaine, had been in existence for centuries before pioneers made the mental leap between the knowledge that they could cause respectively sedation and numbness, and the potential for these effects to be used for the benefit of humanity. Dr Harrop-Griffiths will put a humorous spin on a fascinating story.
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-an...

I can't believe the speaker doesn't even mention the Japanese Edo Period physician Hanaoka Seishū (1760-1835). He performed the first recorded operation under general anaesthesia in 1804 when he operated on a patient with breast cancer.

I'm not sure where I got the idea but I was under the impression that the Horrace Wells attempt at a GA with N2O might not have been totally a failure in that the patient gave a groan but later reported no pain at that time. Maybe he had provided the first gas analgesia ?

B. Cobo "lived over 60 years in the Americas". Between 1492 and 1541 are just 48. He may have also discovered the continent.
