• Once Saved Always Save...
This video examines the historical development of the once saved, always saved doctrine, tracing its origins from the early church to the present day. The early church fathers, including Clement of Rome, Ignatius, Polycarp, Origen, Irenaeus, Cyprian, and Justin Martyr, unanimously rejected the idea of unconditional eternal security, instead teaching that believers could turn away from Christ and forfeit their salvation. They warned against the Gnostic heresy, which taught that the elect were saved by nature and could not be lost, regardless of their conduct.
It wasn't until the 5th century that Augustine, influenced by his Manichean Gnostic background, laid the foundation for the modern once saved, always saved doctrine. He taught that salvation was entirely a work of God and that the elect would inevitably persevere. However, Augustine's views were not adopted by the Greek-speaking Eastern church.
During the Reformation, Martin Luther rejected once saved, always saved, teaching that believers could commit apostasy, though he believed in a special gift of perseverance for the elect. It was John Calvin who fully developed the doctrine, teaching that all true believers have the gift of perseverance and will be inevitably saved. Calvin's views diverged from the tradition before him and even from other Reformation leaders.
