Two years ago I got fed up with listening to the Greatest Hits and decided to dive headfirst into their discography. I had no idea what was in store for me. I discovered songs that tell stories of love, anger, life and death. Today I play their music when I am sad and when I am happy. Probably one of the greatest decisions of my life.
The same thing happened to me a couple year ago. I discovered some incredible stuff from their early years and even some of their '80s stuff that I hadn't heard. They truely are princes of the universe :)
I really like "Death on two legs" off "Night at the Opera" album. Everything, from the classical piano to the very clever yet hate filled lyrics, is just pure genius.
+TheOfficialCMAN For me there is one that could fight for the title: Wacken OpenAir 2013 Nightwish gig. Those 2 are the best shows I've seen. Wish I had seen them live :(
Technically..their "decline" as they put it, only happened in the United States and that was because MTV boycotted the "I Want To Break Free" video, because it was too "shocking" for America to see a rock band in drag. All around the rest of the world they continue to grow big and "I Want To Break Free" remains one of their greatest hit songs. "The Works" is a great album.
That and the bible belt ruined Queen for the rest of Americans who loved the band, or would have loved them, if they had gotten to see and hear them play. I don't like that Freddie isn't alive to front the band, however I hope that Queen and Whoever get the reception in America they deserve. When Freddie was alive, the band strived to achieve world domination. They conquered most of the world, I hope they continue to do so🎹
Paul Prenter also pissed of the enirety of America by declining radio appearances, and other things that wouldve helped them maintain popularity in the US, without even telling the band about the offers
+vlad_the_dracula I personaly prefer "Somebody to Love" or "Show Must Go On", given that the prior was considered superior from a song-writing perspective by Freddie himself and that the second was beyond anything anyone could expect from someone who couldn't even stand without leaning on something....
+Anonymous It's been said that Freddie considered it his masterpiece, but in an interview, I heard him say that he could write better than that. He said Somebody to Love was a better song than Bohemian Rhapsody. But Freddie didn't say he considered any of his songs a masterpiece, he called them "disposable"🎹
The first band I've come to love, not only like. My favorite with Pink Floyd coming close second. Queen was such an amazing band. Never will be forgotten.
I was 8 year old when Freddie Mercury died. I just started to get into music. My first album was queens greatest hits 2. I'm now 33 with an 8 year old kid who loves queen just as much as I did. She knows all the words to the songs. Someday I hope she'll past on the music to another generation.
Gareth L My father played me some BoRhap when I was 5 years old and I instantly loved it - I begged him to play more, whether he just put the the song on repeat or play me more from the band. (I know, and for many years have known the words to over 30 Queen songs). Anyways, that is the earliest life memory I have, which really shows how much Queen impacted me. Although it wasnt necessarily my dads, Queen immediately became my favorite band, and was probably what drove me to love 70's and 80's music as a child growing up in the early 00's. What i'm trying to say, is Freddie - and in extension Queen - will live forever through people like you and my dad (and hopefully, some day, me). Just look at how many young people commented on how mad they are they were unable to see the original Queen in concert!
Freddie is just amazing. And queen just rocked the world from the 70s until now. So many people commenting that what is Freddie doing with guitar. When he in fact could play the guitar quite well. As well as drums and his favourite the piano he played like no other.
Adam lambert is amazing. He is not replacing freddie. No one can replace him. He is simply a new frontman with a completely different style to continue the legend of Queen.
So, I was listening to Sheer Heart Attack today (The first actual Queen album I ever listened to--before this I only listened to the songs on their own, or on the greatest hits compilations), and I swear to god, it was like an experience. All the songs flowed together amazingly, Tenement Funster and Flick of the Wrist was the best example of this (It was already about fifteen or sixteen seconds into Flick of the Wrist that I realized that this wasn't still Tenement Funster, and that was only because I could tell it wasn't Roger singing anymore), but it was great! Now I'm just going to scour RU-vid for the full albums to see if this theme continues--because I love it!
the cross dressing in I Want To Break Free was mainly the reason their popularity declined in America. British humour doesn't amuse everyone i guess. the video was actually banned from MTV. also freddie wore drag onstage when they performed, which wasn't very well recieved. i love them though, their style is divine and i love that they were actually pretty down to earth and just liked to joke around and have fun with their fans
What do you blokes at watchmojo mean by writing "QUEEN AND FREDDIE MERCURY"? Are you trying to exclude Fred or are you saying that he's more important than the other members of the band? Freddie would crawl out of his grave and choke you by doing this. And John Deacon retired in '97. Get your shit right.
Sadly, yes. Freddie, Lennon, Whitney, Michael Jackson.... I've always had crazy love for Freddie. Vocally, phenomenal. I have seen some really good new current male vocalists. Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars.... So there is "good ones" out there. But Freddie's death to me anyway, was tragic.
+Maxwell Smallwood Brian May wrote it originally for his solo album, which he was doing as he was trying to get out of depression caused by the death of Freddie, the death of his father, and family problems. Then he sent the track to Taylor, who didn't listen to it for a while and then heard it and realised it was brilliant. It is amazing that something so terrible could cause something so beautiful, though I am certain that if Freddie had lived a few more years he would come up with and record multiple songs that would be way cooler.
You got pretty much everything right apart from one little thing. They formed in 1970 but it was only Mercury, May and Taylor who were the founding members. Deacon joined the band in 1971 and so while they didn't form in 1971, it was the first time they were together as the iconic lineup
Michael had a great voice (and he is one of my favorite singers :D), but Freddie's voice was much stronger and when they created a song together you can clearly hear that Michael's voice was very smooth and gentle and Freddie's voice was edgy and strong :) But they are both great singers :)
An acceptable look at Queen. One of Watchmojos better efforts. Its great to see how enduring this pre Queen + and pre Brian May and Roger Taylor + music is especially in the U.S. (in the states it was phenominally uncool to be a Queen fan until the mid 1990s due to homophobia which was common and a lack of understanding of AIDs also common at the time, so many of us such as myself hid the fact we loved Queen from the mid 80s into the 90s). One glaring thing though: Queen technically formed in august 1970 not 1971. That month Freddie Bulsara changed Smiles name to Queen, designed the logo and changed his name to Freddie Mercury.
Brian May and Roger Taylor made the band and had kept it alive until the very end even with or without John of Freddy( R.I.P Freddy Mercury, there can be no one that can compare against you)
I am the only 12 year that LOVES QUEEN I KNOW EVERY SONG AND MY UNCLE LOOKS LIKE FREDDIE MERCURY LOL R.I.P FREDDIE MERCURY #BOHEMIANRHAPSODYTHEMOVIE #QUEEN #FREDDIEMERCURY
