Ralph Bakshi is one of those artists who will stop at nothing to bring his art into reality. His films are very underrated and very deep being that they are adult movies. His legacy went to inspire many other filmmakers like spike lee or Quentin Tarantino, which explains some trademarks about their own movies. I hope he makes a comeback with another animated movie or show.
has there ever been a biopic made of bakshi? i think it'd be really interesting to have a bakshi-style animated biopic about him, the guy is so interesting and he really was and is a pioneer in his field. anyways, great series!!! bakshi's works have been a major interest of mine for years now and i love seeing people recognize his art and talent.
I was inspired by him as a teen starting to discover my artistic talent, and was so excited as a kid seeing "American Pop" which I can't recall how many times I've watched. I dreamed of getting into animation someday at that age because Bakshi, and that movie as well as "Fire and Ice". I never did, and got into making trippy surreal blacklight painting instead. I hope more people discover those films as they stand out as innovative in the field of animation, plus they have great story, music, and imagery. "American Pop" especially just has so much feeling. I still watch it from time to time especially when feeling stressed, and it always brings me back to those days being a carefree teenager again. Salute to Ralph, and thank you for the inspiration to pursue being an artist.
Ralph Bakshi was an epiphany to me - i only knew happy disney-like animations in my country, and then studies came and i stumbled upon Cool World and American Pop. I fell in love-hate relationship with Bakshis movies, because they were so unique, brave, controvercial and most of the time heart breaking. When he was gathering money for Last Days of Coney Island, i was bonkers! Then when it came i finally subscribed to netflix (lol thx Bakshi) and the animation left me stunned and heartbroken and wow man... this was something. My fav book in my collection is Bakshis Unfiltered. LOVE IT! THANKS for making this long-ass tribute to one of my fav film creators

It speaks about so much like the character's passion for music and how it can cross boarders, oceans and language barriers and, sadly, how war can cut down young lives and end someone's life and gift to the rest of the world before it can be shared. I saw that movie when I was younger, but as a lover of music, I can still appreciate its message and stories
For your next animation lookback, i have the perfect subject: Osamu Tezuka A.K.A. the god of manga. He was basically the Walt Disney of Japan creating such classic manga and anime stories such as Mighty Atom (Astro boy in America), Jungle emperor Leo ( Kimba the white lion in America), Black Jack, Phoenix, Princess knight, etc. He worked on more manga then anime, but what anime he did work on was very influential, as the original 60s Astro boy cartoon was the first Japanese cartoon to be shown and broadcast in America, so basically, he kinda created anime. Please consider him for your next animation lookback.
No, the original Astro boy 60s cartoon came out in america in 1963, 4 years before Speed racer came out. There was also Kimba the white lion in 1965, which was the first anime in color.
My dad sat me down when i was 7 years old to watch American pop, and still to this day 20 years later i have the VHS and still think its a masterpiece and i credit that movie and my grandfather with my musical interests which i live by something my grandfather said, and he said "if music speaks to you, love it, if you cant hear it, listen, if music is silence, you have gone deaf" and i listen to everything from The Ink Spots, to Brenda lee, Elvis presley, to creedance clearwater revival, mushroomhead to Suffokate
American Pop is probably my favorite film, period. Great music, animation, and history. For any who haven't seen it, you should give it a watch. It's a great film.
Aw man, American Pop is one of my favorite movies ever. It has beautiful animation, a great story, great characters and a great soundtrack. It's easily one of Ralph Bakshi's best works.
Man I wish adult animated films like Ralph Bakshi's could be a thing today, looking at Wikipedia's article on adult animated films it's mostly just adapations of anime, comic books and such. Nothing like these movies.
American Pop’s my favorite movie of Bakshi’s lineup. The way he uses rotoscope to tell a story is genius. The settin of a separate generations inna family tree tryna be successful doin what they love and the obstacles and struggles they have to face in order to pursue that passion feel real cause the story is incredibly relatable when it comes to many modern day artists that deal wit the randomness of music industry and life on the regular, doesn’t matter what genre they do. C00nsk1n’s *(I have to spell it this way cause the PC asshats that run RU-vid have their bots deletin it)* a close second to me cause it shows the issues of racism and violence through the usage of satire and offensive dark humor while also sendin a message to the audience to think of, but American Pop to me is his magnum opus. All in all, Ralph Bakshi’s a bonafide legend and we should never take any of his work for granted
I love this series. I am a total film and animation history nerd! I’m trying to think up of something I can create and maybe start making RU-vid videos that are video essays or reviews, since I really admire the community here
My only problem is that animat hasn’t had an English class in a while. My brain will hear a sentence like 3 times in a video and go “AH WHY DOESNT THAT SOUND RIGHT?” And id figure out he fudged the English :P

Bakshi's story is more inspiring and interesting than his movies themselves. His imagination was ever exceeding the budgets and resources he's been given and he has always been way ahead of his time. But boy, oh boy, ain't rotoscope one hell of an ugly thing. I have the same problem with it as with Zemeckis' mocap use.
If you're looking for an amazing example of rotoscoping, watch Loving Vincent. It's a movie that was filmed and then HAND PAINTED to look like artwork of Vincent Van Gogh. It's a loving tribute to Van Gogh and it's a beautiful work.
Thank you for this series. I love Bakshi's works and have been curious what else he has done compared to what I have seen. So you opened my eyes to at least 3 new ones for me.

American pop was one of my favorite bakshi films, and one of my favorite animated films. I always loved the animation and the historical theme of the movie.

American Pop is one of my favorite films. When its animation is unsettling, it's so in the right places in the right ways, and DAMN if I don't consider its version of "Somebody To Love" isn't one of the greatest animated film songs of all time.
I remember as a kid being blown away by the trailer for Fire and Ice in a cinema, but then being bummed that I couldn't get to one of the few regional screenings to see the movie.
If memory serves me well, Fire and Ice was also an early project to involve the comic artist and character designer Steven E. Gordon, who is remembered or appreciated for character designs at Nest Animation- features about historical figures, Bible stories and religious admiration to adapt animations based on the book of Mormon... But most will likely think of The Swan Princess, which Steve did the designs for. I personally believe and find people appreciating his character designs in X-Men Evolution and the Ultimate Avengers animated features (straight to DVD)
I had the same problem with filming. I wanted the actor to just act natural and for some reason he just refused. However, I did eventually get the shot when the actor started interacting with the people around him instead of on me and the camera.
Hey, once you're done doing these great videos on Ralph Bakshi career. Can we also have a separate video documentary done on the animated 80's film; "Starchaser The Legend Of Orin". Given it too is a rotoscoped animated gem of a sci-fi fantasy film?! Love all the behind the scenes B&W look at the filming process of the rotoscope process but wish it had more of the camera work seen behind it per se y'know!
American Pop was my first introduction to Ralph Bakshi (even before Fritz the Cat), and remains one of my favorite movies ever. It's so frustrating how few people know what I'm referring to when I mention it
I remember watching The Hobbit when I was a child. Didn't know who made it, but loves it a lot. Might try to find more of his movies on DVD or digital.
OK OK NOW THAT MAKES A LOT OF SENSE!!! I was with a buddy of mine at his house about a week ago and we got absolutely fucked after hitting a few dabs of this rosin ball of weed and we watched Fire and Ice. Now, I was left with a lot of questions about the movie after watching it and I never understood it up until now. Finding out it was a Bakshi film now makes sense of the movie even if I was high as hell.
The one problem with AMERICAN POP--it's too abridged. They have to get through four generations too quickly, so it's very Cliff-Noted. A movie like this deserved to be a serial film.
I think I just found my new inspiration. I really need to get some free time and watch his animated movies there so fascinating and he's just a very unique and interesting person!
Most likely an honorable mention like how Mary Poppins and Who Framed Roger Rabbit were for Walt Disney Animation Studios or Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back in Action were for Looney Tunes.
