I got a Stetson from my great uncle who was an auctioneer and worked on a ranch. It reminds me of his annual pig roasts we would go to as kids. He was a great man.

I have one! I didn't know about Stetson until I got mine when I was still in the Army. Cavalry Stetson is a cavalry tradition in the US Army. Since it's unapproved and unauthorized per the Army's dress code, its wear is regulated by the unit commander (copying Wikipedia here).

I really like the Open Road Straw Stetson. I do not own one, as I'd be all hat and no cattle. Great video though. One on Wrangler's would be cool. They have an interesting history and the fact that they still use American denim even on there cheap jeans in fascinating.

Actually the OR is exempt from that judgement. It’s a hat for bankers, lawmen, car salesmen and pretty much anyone who avoids horses and other livestock.

Miguel Vargas - Stetson actually makes two different Open Road straw hats. The more expensive (20X?) one is flimsy and gets dirty faster, and is only made every few years. The less expensive one is better in every way, unless you’re a snob about Xs. Go for it - they’re pretty good hats.

Bought a Henry big boy all Weather repeating rifle chambered in.357mag/.38spl, then I bought some chippewa ranch boots, then I bought 3 Stetsons. Open road 6x in caribou grey, the Yancy outdoor gamblers hat in phantom grey, and last I bought a los alamos in straw for the hot summer days. We live now in western state Colorado where the great west/ranchers live still. Love our American products... hell I'm even Native American of the Navajo nation. That's about as American you can get...

I'm a new subscriber, and catching up on your videos. As a female, the majority of content applies to me, despite the exclusivity in your presentations. No objection, just noted. My first hat was given to me (at age 9 in 1975) by my maternal grandfather. It was his beloved forest green wool flat cap, a slightly love bitten by moths 504 Kangol. I wore it all the time, until his passing in 1984. By then, I had acquired a second gifted hat from my father for my 16th birthday, a straw Stetson cowboy hat. I can't recall the model, but it was perfect for summer farm chore days and many late evening trail rides. I purchased my own felted Stetson in 2010. Unfortunately lost it in white water crossing. Damn fine hat!

Stetsons are amazing. Im more of a straw western hat in the summer guy than I am a felt hat guy but I’m coming around. I have three stepson hats and two resistol.

I just bought my first Stetson, the mink "Temple." It is by far the best quality hat I have ever owned or worn, very impressed. Also, in case anyone was thinking that it looks familiar... rumor has it that a certain archaeologist donned that same hat in at least one scene in a certain 80's movie...

I am not proud of it but I have a few Stetsons now. I have the Buffalo Drifter which is amazing for most any outdoor activity. I also have a crushable Sturgis which I take canoeing since it's getting old and I'm not as afraid of it getting soaked. Finally I have the Open Road which is a great all around hat. It doesn't seem too out of place in town and the same in the country. They're amazing hats. High quality and for those who love the idea: American made. (I know that's not always the greatest but I'm proud of it and it is quality made with Stetson.)

Just watched Death Valley Days about the beginnings of the Stetson. I think they made the story a bit more colorful for tv

Around here (SD, WY, MT) the “Cattleman” bash is seen most on actual cattlemen and cowboys (and cowgirls), with the “Montana Peak” gaining ground as one goes farther west. I occasionally wear a felt Stetson “Open Road,” as famously worn by all the Texas lawmen that caught Lee Harvey Oswald and then Jack Ruby, and was sported as well by four U.S. presidents. There is a saying of derision out here - “All hat and no cattle.” The narrow-brimmed “Open Road” does not pretend to cowboying. In addition I have two Stetson “OR” straws (which really should be discarded) and a genuine Stetson bowler (or derby) which, with a red plaid Filson “Double-Mac,” does Christmas dress-up duty. Nice to see you looking at Western style lately.

I enjoyed learning about the history of Stetson. I’ve recently seen one other RU-vid video on the history of another hat manufacturer. I can’t remember the last time I’ve worn a hat with the exception of my Canada Goose Cap and a baseball cap. Having said that I have taken an interest in a Stetson style hat so if you have any recommendations on who makes a decent Stetson, I’d be interested in getting your thoughts on this topic...Thanks, Carl....as usual, this is a very well made video!

Great video. I love Stetson hats but my favorite brand for hats is Carlos Santana. I love hats and have more than I’m willing to admit but I keep going back to my Santana hats

I don't know if it's the same in the US but here people will often say a Stetson when they mean a cowboy hat. Like people often say Hoover when they mean vacuum cleaner.

I lived in Colorado in the '80s and wore both felt and straw Stetsons - loved 'em then, love 'em now, although I don't have much cause to wear them in Massachusetts...

Interesting fact on the wiki page for Boss of the Plains Hat which is probably why they have always been pricey: "For years, Stetson worried about the waterproofing, and finally decided to make his hat of beaver felt. It took about 42 beaver belly pelts to produce a high quality hat"

The x denote the quality of the material of the hat. But keep in mind there is no industry standard a Stetson 4x might be equal to another companies 6 x.

Hey man, sort of a weird question, please don't take this personally! I think you definitely rock the hat look, but do you think you'd reach for it if you had a full head of hair? I have rather long hair and I can't really decide if wearing a hat like this with long hair would look goofy - definitely looks good with a tightly cropped or clean shaven scalp.

It’s hard to tell, I wear them for protection from the sun and weather. If I had hair I probably wouldn’t be as quick to rock one unless it really suited the occasion.

I have good thick hair or so says my GF lol and I’m always wearing my straw cowboy hat in the summer, the tall crown with ventilation allows for good air flow, keeps dirt and hay and other debris out of my hair, the wide brim protects my head and shoulders from the sun and if we get a sudden rain shower it makes an okay umbrella keeping the water off my face and glasses.
