Super utility players are often overlooked, but they hold a great deal of value in the modern MLB landscape.

You have to start this with Honus Wagner. The book on Wagner was that he was the best fielder in the league at every position except catcher. He played over 200 games apiece at shortstop, third base, first base, and the outfield. He only played 57 games at second base, but he played the position in 11 separate seasons.

Growing up going to valleycats games, and still to this day, Ben Zobrist is a hero. He is the super utility man of my generation, and I rooted so hard for Zobrist. I remember when the valley cats were founded, and I would go to most of their home games. It was amazing as a teen! Ben Zobrist was so much better than literally everyone else on the field. He was playing ss mostly, and to reiterate, he was SO MUCH better than anyone else. It was really cool to have that 15 minutes down the road. Watching him win a World Series was great, but watching him go to another team and immediately win another one was so fucking amazing.

Ben came and visited my little league team in 2008 to talk about the gospel and god to everyone and how it helped him in his baseball journey. He gave us all signed balls and card, what a lad.

Nice video....Jose Oquendo and Keith Moreland were somewhat super utility men I remember from the 80s. Moreland even played catcher early in his career.

My favorite super utility player was Jose Oquendo. He played almost his whole career with St. Louis (2 years with the Mets before going to St. Louis). His career WAR was only 13.6, but in 1989 he had a 5.4 WAR while leading the league in games played. The year before, with a 2.4 WAR, he managed to play all 9 positions.

The Cardinals had a secret weapon name Jose Oquendo. He has played all the positions and even pitch a couple games and as a catcher as at least 1 game in 1988.

Biased as a Cards fan, but i feel like the Cardinals have been really good at this for years- getting defensive value out of average bats by playing them wherever they're needed.

your videos seems to be consistently higher quality than some of the larger baseball channels on youtube. you've def earned my subscription and i wish you all the best in the future in growing you audience. my only critiques would be not mentioning honus wagner like someone else mentioned as well as pete rose considering he split his time about 60/40 inf/of

Utility skills also help a little with work circulation. I can handle machinery and electricity well, also handle accounting, management, taxation, and financial management. Cost management is basic.

I play tennis with my left hand and pick guitar with my right hand. The right hand seems to have high accuracy. My right shoulder feels lighter and that's it. I think I can hold the glove with my left hand and throw it with my right hand. If I practice at bat a little, I think I can play like a right-handed hitter. It almost seems like a push rather than a pull.

Good video. Although I'm sure Kim could play 1B or OF in a pinch. Hoping the Giants break the bank to sign Kim next year, and pari him up with Lee. The super Korean connection! Also: Mauricio Dubon sums up Zaidi's tenure with the Giants as GM. Dude was smart enough to get him in the first place, but too short sighted / impatient to hold onto what he had.

You said H S Kim would need one more infield or outfield position to be considered a super utility player. But your definition of super utility requires 4 total positions including at least 2 infield and 1 outfield position. So if Kim added another infield position he would have 4 total positions but none of them in the outfield so therefore he could not be a super utility in that way. He would have to add an outfield position.

@1:20 I agree that belly doesn't make the cut which I agree with, but you say belly who plays center doesn't count, to this I object as he can play corners, just he's good enough to be a starting center fielder, so he does in my mind at least play 4 positions, with just 1 being infield as such falling short of your definition.

I do have to disagree with the statement that playing more positions impacted their offense. A lot of players need to be the super utility because they can’t hit well enough. There is no correlation

This was the only reason I got as far as I did in baseball (Minors Single-A), I grew up playing all positions because there was a new challenge with each one! I thank my father for encouraging me to do that. We even messed around batting left handed from a young age and I ended up being a switch hitter. I didn't start catching until I was 12 years old and that was because I was the only kid on the team who could catch our kid who threw 80mph and wouldn't have an issue with it 😅 Another coaches son who was a catcher in high school at the time started to teach me more and more about how to block, frame, call pitches based on different batters, reading batters body language, how to pop throw and next thing I knew, I was the go to catcher for the next 3 years during season and All Stars when I went on to 12u All Stars and then Pony League 13u and 14u All Stars and Travel ball etc. I didn't stick with catching, but we needed a catcher. I stepped up because I knew I could and be smart about it. It showed me so much more to learn about the game from that position and how to command the field and have overall better baseball IQ and athleticism for game and other positions. No matter what team I was on, I always had some where I could fill in. I was primarily 2nd base & SS. But, I can and would play anywhere and become an absolute fanatic at whatever position I played. I made sure I was going to play that position good and not just "fill in". Made a new team and Coach needs a lead off batter? I'll do it. I had no issue playing any position or batting any spot. I had learned so much and wanted to use it! Never understood people who put their kid at one place and then just think that will be fine. A great utility player I think has the athletic ability to play it and good IQ for the position as well. Not just, fill it.
