Thailand is still the only country in Southeast Asia that hasn't been colonized by Europe: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Malaysia was taken by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British (by partitions) Singapore, Brunei, and Myanmar by the British Indonesia by the Dutch Then you got *French* Indochina (made up of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam) Philippines by the Spanish East Timor by the Portuguese _but they never got Thailand_

@umarmars47
@umarmars47 5 лет назад
To be accurate, they're only ESCAPED colonisation because they act as a buffer country, at that point of time melaka and temasek port is worth more than to colonise other country. Anyway if British makes any trouble, they can call France for help, vice versa for France.. So they always have protection. Colonisation isn't as easy or bloody as you might think, Malayan people at that time was prideful and didn't want to work for the British thus those British calling them as "Lazy". The reason for no all out war is because we only adhere to the King's instruction. We have been open to foreign trade and and influences just that the Portuguese want to take the port by force but it took years of efforts, ship amd supplies before we lost The Ming Empire is also too weak to help us although we're are his interest and good friends... Which is kinda waste really.

Those who protected the realm in ancient kingdom on mainland were not fought just for a city. It was their capital city of the kingdom which consisted of the people in every races, the royal families, the center of culture and trading, everything meant to be their heart of the kingdom. If the city falls, the kingdom falls, and the country in your perception also falls. There was not any border line of those ancient kingdoms on mainland SEA until the period Europian colonization reached the continent in 18th century.

@@thaibadboy7219 I'm just a translator, so I didn't think to add or elaborate on what Epimetheus said (it's not the point of translation), but my understanding of what he said was that he meant that Lavo was originally part of the Dvaravati, then broke itself off into its own kingdom. He doesn't mention the ethnicities of the people. I understand that aside from this video, there is still debate about who the Dvaravati people were. They used the Mon language, but whether they are Mon people or not isn't clear.

You can’t do a war when the normal people don’t support you! You don’t have the economic then.

Zaw Moe Tun Wars between neighboring kingdoms in old days were common and unavoidable. Nowadays though it s taught as history in school but Thai new gen changes better perception on Myanmar. Past is past, those were wars of leaders, not cilvilians. No country or border like present. What Ava did to Ayudhaya, Bangkok did to Viantianne too 100 years later, and modern Thai regrets too. Live with present. No one can go back to fix it.

Even in Previous wars Burmese never try to change or introduce their culture to Thai people.Instead Burmese brought Thai food and music and culture to Burma. For Example during British Rule , British tried indianized Burma. Put Indian Majority in Capital Yangon . Still u can see those Indian curry ( one of unhealthy foods) deep seated in Burmese cuisine and street tea shops like Bombay tea shop in whole country which waste a lot of precious time for young people.

I am an Australian living in Thailand. This is an excellent History of Thailand. I would like to see more of the pre 500 AD history. It is interesting to reflect on the military conquest and colonisation of the Philippines by the Spanish followed by the USA, of Indonesia by the Dutch, of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos by the French, of Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, China and Hong Kong by the British, and Honolulu and Japan by the United States of America. America itself was Conquered by Spain, Portugal, France, Britain and Europe in General. There is an obvious plan to conquer and control the world from Europe (including England). Europe didn’t discover these countries first, they were already discovered and occupied. Every time a country wants to restore an independent home rule government the people are described as terrorists, communists and anti democratic dictators. I was surprised to learn that Japan set out to liberate China and the countries of South East Asia, from European domination and control. When America stopped oil and steel supplies to Japan with trade sanctions Japan regarded this as a hostile act and responded by declaring war on America. Sanctions are an act of war, often preceding kinetic war, that is, military conflict. I was surprised to see a man in a WW2 Japanese soldier’s uniform posing for photographs as a bridge guard in Thailand. You see, it seems Thailand understood that Japan was trying to free Asia from the French, British and American (in the Philippines) conquerers. The Germans originally trained the Japanese army to fight Russia, to prevent Russia getting a year round sea port with access to the Pacific ocean. Similar to the Crimean War fought to prevent Russia gaining a sea port open to the Mediterranean Sea. Japan invaded Thailand as an ally to Thailand. The spread of communism in Asia is an alliance with China against Europe and America, not because Asians want communism, but they do not want foreign rule. The invasion of countries by Europeans has caused resentment which appears to be racism. To repress revolutions by the people, we were taught in Australia, “Beware the yellow peril,” and “The Russians are coming.” These days it’s Border Control to keep the CCP virus out. Sorry, got carried away. Thanks for a great thought provoking documentary.

Da Phetdala Thanks for you information. It is difficult for me to understand the truth of the history. I know when we went to Laos my Thai lady understood the Laotians and Visa Versa. Not so in Khmer Cambodia. We live in Sukhothai. I don’t speak or understand any of these languages. I personally am more interested in the origin of the religions and culture of South East Asian than a history of battles between city states. It seems to me that Thailand has a belief in spirits and the practice ancestor worship that started before the introduction of Hinduism, which was followed by Buddhism. That earlier belief and worship system is very similar to the Japanese Shinto religion. This suggests a more common ancestry that has divided over time into different ethnic groups with a history of battles, forced migration, more battles and conquests or enslavement. I do have some good books about SE Asia but my library is back in Australia. I will use your information to read up on Thai, Tai,Mon Chankri, Siamese, Laos, Taiyuan, Shan, Lue, Lanxang, Nan, Malay, Malay Mon and Khmer. That will keep me busy, as every lead opens whole new avenue of investigation.

Maybe when the new high speed train to China is running we will visit Guangzhou, Guangdong and GuangXi regions. Da Phetdala I have found, ‘The Book of the Pung Gourds.” On books.google.co.th published by ISEAS, the Unstitute of South East Asian Countries. Free reading on the internet. The Kha, original black inhabitants of these lands interest me. As an Australian I am aware that the original people of Australia arrived some 60,000 years ago by boat. DNA testing shows that their descendants were in New Zealand 9,000 years ago and in South America 9,000 years ago. I received a Green Notice from Thai Authorities to advise me that researching the DNA of Australian Aborigines is not permitted. I could not read the Thai writing, my Thai partner could not translate so she just said, No, Not do. So I went on to other things. In Australia it is permitted. I am interested in history. So much knowledge and wisdom is lost every time somebody dies. I find SE Asian people do not appear explain the meaning of Orb (Pearl of Wisdom) of Jao Mae Quanyin (Cėāmae kn xim). She is the Chinese Mother of Mercy, in Malaysian Mandarin Guan Yin Pusa, Guan Shi Yin Pusa, in Khmer Preah Mae Kun Ci Lem, in Sinhala Natha Deviyo and Hanyu Pin Yin: Guanyin. To buddhists Jao Mae Quanyin is a Bodhisattva, one who has reached enlightenment. Her name holds meaning. Jao means Prince or Princess, Ruler, Esteemed Person, Lord, Master, Holy Being. Mae or Maae means mother in Thai. Quanyin means Goddess in Chinese. Mumā and mā mean mother in Chinese. Cimu means loving mother and may be the word route for Cėāmae, spelled Caemae in Wikipaedia. Yin means female, Yan means male. Taiyin means moon so what does Quanyin mean? Quan means Fist in Chinese. The Pinyin dictionary says quán means all, whole, entire, every, complete, right, power, temporary, loop, circle, ring, and immortal. In Vietnamese it means a soldier or warrior, Taekwondo is a martial art in Korea. I could choose appropriate meanings but what was the original Chinese intended meaning?Did the Chinese chose to confuse to hide the true meaning of their symbolic story? Is the orb a star? Is the star Polaris, the North Star or Pole star? Referred to as the Pearl of Wisdom. Is Jao Mae Quanyin the guiding light of the night sky, protector of seamen and desert caravans, travelling without sign posts across land or sea without roads to follow. The dragon of Chinese culture may be the constellation Draco that seeks the Pearl of wisdom. Locating Draco helps to locate and identify Polaris. Graham Hancock had astronomical alignments taken for Anchor and revealed that Anchor Wat was aligned to Draco. He was ridiculed by people that were not astronomers and had not made studies of the alignment. Why does this matter? Because one of the great secret shafts, now revealed, of the Great Pyramid was aligned to the North star at the time the pyramid of Khafra was built. Due to the precession of the equinoxes the North star is not always in position. The North Star at that time was Thuban. How can the designers and builders of Angkor Wat in the 13th century AD be related to the builders of the Khafra’s Great Pyramid of Giza, that was built in 2560 BCE. In the same way that the Nagar is related to the Annunaki in Sumer of Ancient Mesopotamia. Angkor from Nokor from Nagar from Nakar from Nak. The Sanskrit word route of snake. The great snake in the sky is the Milky Way. Its thousand eyes (figuratively speaking) see all good and see all evil. It is the guardian of the heavens. The snakes body forms the defensive and protective wall of the city. Its seven heads represent the seven planets. The Nagar or Nakar’s heads guard the gates and entrances to city. Ancient walled cities were called Nagars. The great Nagar guards the gates to the heavens above. To my mind Quanyin’s meaning is found in the ancient writings of Gilgamesh in Mesopotamia from 2100BC. Shamat, a priestess from the temple of Ishtar, also known as a temple prostitute, is sent by the God King Gilgamesh to seduce Enkidu, a wild man that runs with the deer. This was when agriculture with irrigation was introduced onto the grazing lands of the herdsmen. The king had to re allocate the use of land and resources. They have sex for seven days and seven nights which drains the wild man Enkidu’s energy. Gilgamesh the God King is well pleased. Gilgamesh says they may eat of the tree of life but not the tree of knowledge. Shamat says if we eat of the tree of knowledge we will will have the great ability of heroes. They eat the fruits of the tree of knowledge, but lose eternal life. Gilgamesh is angry because he has been disobeyed. Note: The original sin is disobedience of God, not having sex. Sex is a sin in the Judeo-christian version written thousands of years later. The knowledge was to ancient jews sexual knowledge of carnal pleasure, sex. In Buddhism one must let go of the physical and material world and seek oneness with the spiritual universal state of eternal being. Enlightenment leads to transcendence. Gligamesh is angry because they have the power and ability that comes with knowledge, and with these powers, if they eat of the tree of life they will have eternal life. They shall become Gods. This story defines a God as one with incredible powers and one that is an eternal being. In a variation the elixir of life is in a vessel on they ground. A snake comes out of the water and steals the elixir of life. He drinks it and immediately sloths his skin. The ability to renew his body is the origin of the purpose for reincarnation. This led to the worship of snake headed human bodied figurines. The Annunaki. ‘An’ meaning man as in Malay - Malayan. Nak meaning snake and ki meaning earth. Annu in Hindi means Lord Shiva. Anu from An meaning descended from An the chief God of the Sumerian Pantheon. In Iraq and Iran natural gas escapes from the earth. When it ignites it may burn indefinitely as an eternal flame from the underworld. As snakes appear to go to ground and die in Autumn/winter and are reborn or resurrected in Spring and Summer they are seen as fire breathing serpents. For the great serpent in the sky, the Milky Way, to rise into the sky, (as it does rise above the horizon), it must have wings to fly. We have the Fire breathing dragon, emerging from the cave, and rising to seek the secret of eternal life from the Jao Mae Quanyin, The great protector and one with the power to sooth the savage beast. To my mind we are looking at different interpretations of similar and related ideas. Natural science encoded in religious myths. Religious concepts developed from man’s attempts to explain the meaning of our existence. The Egyptians traded with Mesopotamia. The Mesopotamian word for an Egyptian as also the same as their word for an Egyptian ship. ( I forget it) The Kings married each others daughters as peace agreements. To keep it all in the family. Princesses brought their retinue of assistants, priests, advisers, medical staff, maidens and body guards. There was definitely an exchange of ideas, knowledge and beliefs. The Mesopotamians traded with India (Since partition India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) India’s trade and exploration expanded Eastward to South East Asia Indonesia and I believe across the Pacific to America. Traders preferred to learn the local language rather than teach their own language. This way if their competitors did discover their foreign suppliers, It would take them some years to be able to negotiate competitively and successfully. But teaching the locals the principles of stone work and some of the beliefs and natural sciences, especially farming, agriculture and astronomy may have caused local communities to grow and develop. It may have been India that influenced the Aztecs and Incas. Add to that the Chinese North East Asian influence in North and Central America and we can see the likelihood of the Diffusion of Ideas. Most Indian Scholars believe India is the cradle of civilisation. I believe ideas travelled both ways, but each civilisation developed their own language, interpretation and expression of those ideas. The natural world, the cosmos, the universe, the sun and the moon, the earth, sea and rivers, plants and animals are our natural world. They exist and are significant to all people around the world. They influence all cultures and societies. The North Star and Draco are still significant pointers today. We have just advance in our technology and use different systems to fulfil our same needs. It did not take thousands of years for Astronomy and Astrology, Religion, Trade and methods of war to reach India. The arrival of Indians in SE Asia is equated to Hindu Buildings and the growth of trade and civilisation under the leadership (or was it conquest and rule?) of Indian Princes. They brought advanced irrigation and agriculture to SE Asia. Officially 2,500 years ago. So who were the Kha? The original black inhabitants. There are ancient monoliths in Thailand. Some Thai historians propose that Thailand and SE Asia must be older than China. During the Ice ages China was uninhabitable. The Chinese must have moved South during the ice ages, or only moved north after the Younger Dryas. Much of Ice Age China is now under water in the South China Sea. The habit of building houses on stilts in SE Asia may be a technique practiced over the last 10,000 years to deal with rising water levels bobjuniel@icloud.com Too difficult using RU-vid this way. balls bag 👍Yes I agree. The history of the world is very much a history of population division, migration and conquest.Asia was no exception. But the Europeans in the 15th century set out to conquer the world, imposing Catholicism, the word means Universal, the Religion for the New World. Not just city states and kings fighting but a deliberate plan to conquer the world.

These videos make stuff I've never even thought or cared about suddenly fascinating. Can you do a video on the Late Bronze Age Collapse? It might be hard to establish a clear chronology and a lot of it is very open to interpretation, but it's one of the most interesting events in human history in my opinion. I also think that the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom would make for a good video, one of the deadliest conflicts in history but rarely covered in western media.
@myohmy9000
@myohmy9000 5 лет назад
TheAntiParadox The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom would be a great topic. Who wouldn’t to know about the time a Chinese dude who thought he was Jesus’s brother caused an event that took 20 million lives
@Smartacus98
@Smartacus98 5 лет назад
That one guy who sacked Constantinople 20 million is a pretty conservative estimate too; 30-70 million is very possible, considering the staggering decline in China's population beginning in 1851 (it would not fully recover until we'll into the 20th Century). The Taiping Rebellion is probably the single largest population catastrophe in the modern history of China. Hong Xiuquan's astronomical kill count and absurd personality cult would make Stalin blush.
@myohmy9000
@myohmy9000 5 лет назад
TheAntiParadox Yeah. And the fact that the Qing dynasty survived it, even when they failed at political and economic reform, as well as going through the first opium war. And when you consider the fact that anti Manchu groups and Muslims in Dali revolted, as well as Nepal invading Tibet and Britain kicking off the second opium war, you have to think to yourself “how the hell did the Qing survive?”. For the most part, the early success of the Taiping rebellion looks like the Mandate of Heaven has ended for the Qing and was taken by this upstart cultish group, but they managed to somehow avoid that. Maybe if internal strife didn’t occur between Hong’s subordinates, as well as not taking Shanghai and pissing off the Colonial Empires of the West, they could have overtaken China.
@Smartacus98
@Smartacus98 5 лет назад
That one guy who sacked Constantinople How the Qing survived the century of humiliation is beyond me, any one of the catastrophes that befell them would have been enough to destroy the mandate of any other ruling dynasty. China is a country whose history is full of surprises and inexplicable black swans.

Vietnamese history? Do you want the false nationalist version or the real version? Because I can tell you Vietnamese nationalists distorted a lot information about the Vietnamese history. I don’t trust any of these Vietnamese nationalists, so when I did my research for nearly 20 years...I can tell you a different story based on scientific evidences such as archeological, anthropological, genetic and historical evidences.
@Frenzybug
@Frenzybug 5 лет назад
Звезда Смерти Nationalist version excludes everything that is pertaining to Chinese. In fact, nowadays, they are trying to remove anything that is related to China. Sad but true!
@Frenzybug
@Frenzybug 5 лет назад
Звезда Смерти The nationalists claimed that the Vietnamese people come from the Dong Son people... In fact, the Dong Son people were a “Proto-Malay” race, meaning they are Australo-Melanesian with a small feature of Mongoloid. Based on new DNA study, the modern Vietnamese’s main DNA component is composed of Southern Han Chinese with a few Southeast Asian DNA (Negrito, Proto-Malay and Deutero-Malay). Therefore, modern Vietnamese only carry a very small amount of genes from the Dong Son people, but the Dong Son gets celebrated as the ancestor whereas the main gene contributors, the Chinese, were never mentioned... I hope you get the idea. And based on history, many Vietnamese Dynasties can trace their ancestors to China, even Ngo Quyen who rebelled against the Southern Han kingdom (The name “Dai Viet” originated from the Southern Han kingdon, not by the late Ly dynasty) was a Han Chinese. That is just a few that I had listed!

In the past, Thais specialized in combat, punch boxing and Muay Thai were told in French and Japanese. They are very good at the geography of the country. There are still firearms and cannons that are produced by themselves and weapons from East Asia, China, Japan and Europe because Siam has long trade with Europeans and East Asia, China, Taiwan, Japan and Russia before World War I, about 500 years old, is the big brother. of the original ASEAN region without a doubt If there was no World War Laos and Cambodia wouldn't have happened, and I've known this since living in Hua Hin before the epidemic 3 years ago. Thai people are so friendly that you don't even want to cause them problems. Thai people have many face shapes. You will be the whole world there. All races are there. everything is very good Cheaper and better than Thai baht compared to other currencies. I may have thought of it myself or I don't know. But I think you should know that there are nice countries in the world. This is Thailand, my 1st home. From living in Thailand and vacationing in Thailand for 3 years, I'm sure why Japanese people don't want to fight Thai people in World War 2. They are friendly but When it comes to fighting, they fight and are very scary. From former homeless people in the Pacific ✌✌😍😍🍻🍻👍👍

However, there are so many Thai nationalists out there agree with this video or even say something ridiculous about the unjust boundary delimitations in the past. I have to apologise my fellow Thais for saying this, because I learnt that my history classes promoted hatred between neighbouring countries. I know that those countries also do the same thing. So I just hope one day we will overcome this nonsense.

We as human all take, and we as human all give at some points of time. From what I can understand, some of our roots (cultures, language, art) are from Khamer. You got friends, right? This video is very good but I must contest that they had a 'change of heart' in world war 2. There is a lot of nuance to Thailand's part in world war 2, they were essentially occupied and they acted as puppet government hostages - interestingly the monarchy opposed Japanese actions at every point they could as well. But the video is for 5 minutes so I'll have to let it pass. Some really great content, the interesting thing about King Taksin is that he was half Chinese and his actions solidified the distant familial Thai-Chinese connection present all over Thailand.
@EpimetheusHistory
@EpimetheusHistory 5 лет назад
Thanks for the great comment! 'change of heart' was meant in a facetious manner (perhaps inappropriate)...in that they had just been invaded by a Yuge battle-hardened army...most would have a "change of heart" "distant familial Thai-Chinese connection"...interesting what is the current Thai view of China....as opposed to their immediate neighbors? (in your opinion) Thanks :)
@TalesFromThailand
@TalesFromThailand 5 лет назад
That's alright, you have done well. I just wished to add to things where I can, I think I will stream on the topic of King Taksin later today - your video served as a reminder to check my video to-do. If you go around Thailand you will see a lot of Chinese families, Tourists, Temples, Building, Letters and Characters, Shrines etc. The Thai people distinguish themselves as their own very solid identity and in-group but they seem to make an exception towards the Chinese as many Thais have Chinese relatives. This is a result of Chinese traders, mercenaries and boats coming into contact with the elites and common people of Thailand/Sukothai/Siam/Ayuthaya (all words for the Thai/nation people at different times/places in history) It's also interesting to see that Thailand's current ruling elite are almost all part modern Han-Chinese in their ancestry. You will find that many Chinese people and communities are all over South East Asia but the choice to invest in, move to or travel to is usually Thailand or Singapore outside of the Chinese sphere of influence. Thailand has a non-aggressive stance to most of its neighbours and the only real country they seem to dislike in a very mild way is Burma or 'Myanmar'. Thailand uses it's position of stability to use migrant workers from these neighbouring countries to fuel cheap labour in the economy. Thailand is actually a very stable country in terms of business and day-to-day life. Politics and coups are something that only really takes place in Bangkok. It's often surprising to people that Thailand is actually a country with a lot of real-life freedom for people living there. Thais generally consider themselves to generally be more civilized and cultured than the modern Chinese but recognise their power and seem to be okay with them visiting/living in Thailand. Thailand is generally a very accepting place and Asian minorities like the Chinese can easily assimilate into the country as they look quite similar to Central Thai people. Most families would be more open to have their children marry the Chinese than other minorities in the country as they share history and are considered to be connected to wealth - which is perfectly reasonable in my books.
