I’m just gonna say Hershey Pennsylvania is one of the best places I’ve ever been to. The fact that the chocolate company has shaped an entire town and made it in to a bustling hotspot with great people is awesome. I love going to the giant center for the Hershey Bears, HersheyPark, Hershey’s chocolate world and the Hershey lodge. Such a great place!
My parents won the program number raffle at a Broome Dusters game. The prize was me and my sister getting our pictures taken with the Team goalie (Kenny Holland) immediately after the game. The only thing I remember is how bad he smelled.
The Pittsburgh Hornets and Buffalo Bisons both left the AHL as Calder Cup champions. In 1952, the Cleveland Barons issued a challenge for the Stanley Cup, but were denied. The Hershey Bears have won the most Calder Cups, 11; the Cleveland Barons are second with 9 despite being out of the league since 1973.
I just found your channel... This is GREAT hockey content! I subscribed, rang the bell and can't wait for the next video! You asked for a suggestion? How about the brief and silly adoption of "Cooperalls"...
Fun fact: The Cleveland Barons had the most Calder Cups from 1948 to 2009, with 9 Calder Cups before the Hershey Bears caught up, the Cleveland Barons had a cool fight song too!
Technically the Hartford Wolf Pack are the oldest continuously operated franchise in the AHL as the franchise can be traced back to the Providence Reds. The Utica Comets would be second and can be traced back to the Springfield Indians but they went dormant for a short time during WWII and temporarily relocated. The Hershey Bears are the oldest franchise to continually operate in one city in the AHL.
My dad used to always tell me stories about the many Pittsburgh Hornets games he attended in the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. They had quite a strong following in The Burgh and that’s obviously why the NHL chose Pittsburgh to be one of the expansion cities in 1967.
Super interesting video, the firebirds are our team here in the valley and they just beat the hershey bears 5-0 in the first game of the Calder cup. We'll see how the rest of the series pans out. GO FIREBIRDS!
I once commented on a forum about the Stanley Cup, comparing it to other trophies; the Lombardi Trophy is beautiful but it doesn't have the panache of the Cup; MLB's Commissioner's Trophy is why they talk about winning pennants; the NBA's O'Brien Trophy looks like a melon balanced on a wastebasket; the America's Cup doesn't count when one country held it for over a century; the World Cup isn't even a cup. No other trophy has the look or lore of the auld mug.
The Worcester IceCats... Good times. I miss Worcester being in the AHL but at least we have the ECHL now. Really wish you talked about the creation of the Pacfic Division.
Well I miss the Norfolk Admirals and I also miss living there but now there an ECHL team and are fun games to watch I highly recommended watching a game live in Norfolk
PolarBearProductions What the Jersey Devils did leaving Binghamton was to me bs. I wish Binghamton would return to the AHL. City needs a new or enlarged arena however.
remember them?! the Springfield Indians were my local team, founded and coached by the legendary Eddie Shore. he had a corner box on the first level and you could see him at games. Don Cherry even played for him here.
Eddie was before my time but I remember when they won the Calder Cup in back-to-back years with different parent clubs, which was amazing. I think the only player on both those teams was Marc Bergevin!
Keep it up these videos are actually pretty high quality and entertaining despite how small your channel is. These videos clearly have a lot of time, effort, and research put into them so keep up the good work
probably some time in the future a deeper explanation video would be helpful because a lot of teams (like my OKC Barons) were formed and moved due to leagues closing and relocating and other things, though i think that would take up too much time and would make people lose interest so this comment can be seen as redundant. but itd still be a fun vid and a great way for people who are still learning history of teams for any franchise or league.
Hershey is the oldest to stay in the same city. Oldest franchise is actually Hartford. Hartford was the providence Reds, some other thing, Binghamton Whalers, the Hartford Wolf Pack, then then CT Whale, now the Wolf Pack again.
In the Slot understandable man I work 40 hours + school 16 hours a week... but i just want you to know that I hope u keep up cause i’m sure you’ll make it
Omg thank you for hearting this you are so great. My dad is very good friends with a hockey player who played for the red wings in the 1987-88 and 2 more seasons his name is Jeff Sharples
@@IntheSlot agreed with the comment. Do you know the song that's kind of in the background the whole time? It's some wall-e type stuff and I for the life of me can't think of what it is
the fact that you were able to give an entire leagues history in 4:26 (i'm excluding the outro) is not a good sign that your league is very interesting
You forgot to mention the sudden growth of franchises in 2002 was the result of the IHL folding and several of their remaining franchises joining the AHL.
Hershey is not the oldest franchise. It’s the oldest in its original city. Hartford Wolfpack is the oldest franchise as it traces its roots back to the Providence Reds.
I've always heard the ahl cup pronounced like callder (spelled it that way on purpose so you can say it out yourself if you say it like the guy in the video ... other than that great vid)
Pittsburgh Hornets came back in 1961 and stayed until NHL expansion in 1967, they then moved to Rochester NY to become the Present Day Rochester Americans.
@Greg Snyder That is incorrect. The Americans have nothing whatsoever to do with the Hornets. Rochester was simply awarded an AHL franchise during the 5 seasons that the Hornets went into hibernation when Pittsburgh was building the Civic Arena (“The Igloo”) to make the league team numbers even out. In fact, the Hornets defeated the Americans to win the Calder Cup in their last ever game in 1967 (in overtime in The Igloo). So there’s no way the Hornets moved to Rochester when they were playing Rochester in the Finals.
You are a bit wrong the hershey bears had a team in 36 called the hershey bars I have pictures and there is jerseys of that team in there current arena and old one
