I know that it's now commonplace to use a corporate sponsor name on sports facilities but in Detroit's case this might prove to be a bad corporate strategy. Fans tend to give arenas their own nicknames...in Toronto the Air Canada Centre is nicknamed "The Hanger"-as in the place where planes are kept when not in use. Little Caesar's could see their name backfire when fans call the place "The Pizza Hut". The Wings should have maintained the tradition established with their previous home and called the new building "The Gordie Howe Olympia" after Mr. Hockey and the place where he made Red Wing history.

Another person gets the Octopus and reason for it, WRONG. LOL!!!
@Post2Post
@Post2Post 5 лет назад
What's the reason then?
@DetroitWrecker666
@DetroitWrecker666 5 лет назад
The Legend of the Octopus is a sports tradition during Detroit Red Wings home playoff games involving dead octopuses thrown onto the ice rink. The origins of the activity go back to the 1952 playoffs, when a National Hockey League team played two best-of-seven series to capture the Stanley Cup. Having eight arms, the octopus symbolized the number of playoff wins necessary for the Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup. The practice started April 15, 1952, when Pete and Jerry Cusimano, brothers and storeowners in Detroit's Eastern Market, hurled an octopus into the rink of The Old Red Barn. The team swept the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens en route to winning the championship.[1]

I'm sure you know that the "Original Six" is a myth. It only existed for a twenty-five year period from 1942 when the Brooklyn Americans folded to 1967 when the Great Expansion took place and doubled the size of the league. The league's true original teams were the Montreal Wanderers, the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Arenas, with only three last three competing the season. Don't perpetuate the NHL's created mythology.
@13DatsyukDangle13
@13DatsyukDangle13 7 лет назад
They're the original 6 because they're the only teams left from 1926.
@ImaCOTV
@ImaCOTV 7 лет назад
13DatsyukDangle13 Actually they're called the Original Six because they were the six existing teams at the time of the Great Expansion of 1967. Before that time the term didn't exist. But it had become so ingrained in people that some wrongly think that these six teams were there at the very beginning of the league. And most books about the NHL ignore or gloss over the early history of the league. They cover that it started with four teams, one of which shut down after four games, that there were competing leagues in Western Canada in the 1920s that played for the Stanley Cup, or that at one point the early NHL had ten teams.
