I was born and raised in the Junction and you could drink in bars west of Runnymede and Dundas. The Safari, LaVallette’s, The Texas Pit all had liquor licenses when I started drinking in them in the late 70s. It was only east of Runnymede and Dundas that they couldn’t get a liquid license, if I’m not mistaken.

Love this! My dad and his brothers had a favorite bar they would go to, back in the 50's. They were known as the Junction Boys, we moved away from the area after my dad passed in 1968.

Grew up in the junction in the early 1960's. All l remember was staring out from my grade school (St. Rita's), and looking at all that beautiful yellow snow. Yes yellow snow...lead contamination??? check your soil.

Yes, the junction was identified as one of the most contaminated neighbourhoods in all of Canada and certainly the worst in the GTA. York's garbage was burned at the Symes Road incinerator just north of the Stock Yards. The area had a lot of foundries and paint manufacturers that spewed lead from stacks and the surrounding neighbourhoods had multiple land fill sites. Canada Packers and Swift Premium Meats fill the air with obnoxious smells, along with the hide tanners that were sprinkled through the area. I don't think I would eat a tomato from a Junction garden today.

Pubs and taverns became permanent fixtures in The Junction, as was the case with many railway and factory workers' towns. By 1904, the behaviour of the Junction workers was so out of hand, leading the residents, led by Bill Temple, to vote for banning the sale of alcohol until 1998. It was a long and tough fight led by Vesuvio Pizzeria and Shoxs Sports Saloon to regain the right to again serve alcohol in the area and it was not until 2001 that the first drink was poured east of Keele Street at Shoxs Sports Saloon. For those of you partaking in the Alleykitten, you need to send me a photo of someone on your team having a drink (or a shot) at Shox.

Also know as little Malta..alot of Maltese settled there in the area ..my Husbands family lived on high park in the 60s and 70s he says alot has changed since then saying it's starting to look like bloor west village now ..very trendy with more restaurants and bars He also said that the stock yards were around when he lived there and mentioned the smells in the area would be downright putrid especially in the summer months also remembers alot of hobos living at the corner of dundas and keele in the 60s and 70s

Famous boxer George Chuvalo grew up at the Junction and worked at the Stockyards. I believe he still lives around there. For those who do not know George, he fought Mohamed Ali, the only boxer to never have been knocked down in a fight. He also did a cameo in the movie The Fly, with Jeff Goldblum. He was the man who Jeff arm wrestled. I believe most of the fly was filmed around Toronto. The warehouses where Seth Brundle (Jeff's character) lived was the old factory's south of Dufferin and King, its all studio apartments now and small local mall.

In the mid-60's George purchase a small bungalow on Avon Avenue, to raise his young family, in the Harwood area (Weston Road & Rogers Road) just north of the Stock Yards. In the morning, as we walked to elementary school, we would often meet George as he left his house, wearing a gray sweat suit and a towel around his neck. We'd all yell Hi to George and he'd always return a waive and a "Hello Boys". I later learned that George's early morning run included a run down Weston Road, down Keele Street and down Parkside drive to the Queensway. Then he jogged twice around the perimeter of High Park before jogging back home to Avon Avenue. George held five Canadian heavy weight championships, but hadn't yet taken on Mohamed Ali. 93 professional fights that also included George Foreman and Joe Frazier.
