In the decades after World War 2, American veterans wanted the sports cars that they saw during their service in Europe: 2 doors, 2 seats, no roof and amazing handling--the roadster. MGs and Jaguar imports grew, but the cost to produce any such things in America was high, so resourceful people like Bill Tritt of Glasspar Boats decided to make his own--the fiberglass Glasspar G2. GM was impressed and hired him to deisgn the first fiberglass-bodied corvette. Volvo soon dipped their toes in the water as well. This is that story. The P1900 became the predecessor of the P1800 which grew to fame in the decades to follow, but they never went into roadster territory like this VolvoSport again. With only 68 ever made and 50 accounted for, it is one rare Volvo.

You picked the right guy to interview. A great storyteller and full on Volvo history book! Love Volvo's and loved this piece!!

Great video David! It's funny that he thinks it's not environmentally friendly - I'd argue that driving the same car for 65 years is FAR better for the planet than replacing one every few years!

Thank you for this fascinating story, and what a pleasure to hear it recounted with such passion. I remember coming across a P1900 in a car park in Newbury (Berkshire, United Kingdom, where I lived) n the '70s. I knew of its rarity, as my dad, Kevin Gover, was the Public Relations Officer for the UK Volvo importer, Volvo Concessionaires Ltd, at the time. Then, it was 25/30 years old. classic I recall thinking how amazing it was that one of 67 cars globally was 'in my back yard'. I think it was a pale blue example. I was brought up on Volvos, went to school in them, learned to drive in them, and now have a '62 122s (actually a former Volvo advertising car that I have owned since 1986 (21st birthday present from my dad) and have restored twice), a 240GLT (owned since 2009), and an XC90 bought new, but now old and still a great car. David, the owner of this wonderful P1900, please keep enjoying it and driving it, and recounting your stories. And David, the interviewer, please keep these amazing videos coming! Really enjoying them. Regards from the UK, Lucien Gover.

Dear David Bello. 👍👏👌 Great guy, great car, great story. That was a fantastic kind of documentary. Very well done, Sir! Congrats! I especially love the fact that you let this Volvo enthusiast do nearly all of the talking. Nowadays unfortunately a lot of interviewers babble too much respectively interrupt too often. You definitely respect this old gentleman. Decency is a really rare behaviour nowadays. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all involved people (and cars). 😁

Mr Hunt has earned a lot of respect if not through maintaining this car then at least through his contribution to the community of Volvo enthusiasts worldwide. There is always a lot to learn when in the presence of an elder. Thanks for watching and appreciating the efforts gone into the making of this video ☺️

Fun (or useless) fact about the three cars shown from 12:05-12:20. Yellow one is in traffic, been in traffic since 1957-10-17. At the latest vehicle inspection it had 1430 (!) kilometers on the odometer Privately owned. Blue one. Taken out of traffic 1993-06-22. Owned by the Volvo museum in Gothenburg. White one has been in traffic since 1993-11-01. Also owned by the Volvo museum.

The model was mainly based on standard components from the Volvo PV444, but was built on a separate tubular frame. The engine was a further development of the 1.4 liter 4 cylinder of the Volvo PV444. Thanks to double carburetors, a different camshaft, larger intake valves and a higher compression ratio, this engine developed 70 hp.

If I remember correctly, a P1900 was destroyed in a barn fire in Sweden not so many years ago. A bus caught fire on the road outside and it accidentily spread to the barn, which contained several classic cars that were stored for the winter, allegedly including a P1900.

@8:38 Are there bolts missing in the "trailing arms" - both sides?? The one @ 4:30 used to be white. Prosser painted it Red. I know this because I drove it from N. Hollywood to Portland, Maine via Seattle. for him. The only issue it had was a blown radiator cap gasket. I fashioned a replacement one from my leather belt. oh - and the battery failed (6 volt) so I needed to be aware of where I parked so I could bump start.

When you think of persons, as knowledgeable as Irv Gordon, Rip,the owner of the red 1800 with around 3 to 4 million miles, or the owner of the 1900, these persons take care of there cars, I always thought that the 1900 was somehow based on the Jensen, or the car known as frog eye, it looks similar, I remember seeing a poster or picture where it showed all the Volvos starting from the 1927, all the way till the 240, it even showed some unique models.

Had the privilege of keeping Dave's 122 & P1900 at our facilities on display for years. Best memory was a last minute call from the Peterson Museum to add it to their "Fabulous Fiberglass " display that ran for 10 months. The P1900 from San Francisco was scheduled to be on display & canceled at the last minute. Dave's car was complete & roadworthy but the car needed to be delivered within hours to make the event. Concerned with hours of bumper to bumper traffic to Los Angeles, we transported it in an enclosed hauler & got to drive it to its assigned display pad. We were treated to a private tour with close friends shortly thereafter, meeting some icons of fiberglass. (Manx dune buggy guy & Bruce Adams, who was a fiberglass guru) Great exposure fot the #18 P1900 and a great tribute to Dave Hunt and his commitment to these cars. The car has been a centerpiece for too many car shows and parades to begin to list in the Inland Empire. His 1984 244 is still rolling with hundreds of thousands of miles on it!
