You say in your introduction that you won't watch "Rings of Power". Well - it is certain that this series does not live up to the quality of Peter Jackson's films. But if I were you, I wouldn't "not watch" them, but - in order to assess them correctly - first read some of the books from Tolkien's universe - namely (after "The Lord of the Rings" and possibly "The Hobbit") I would read "The Silmarillion" and then the "Unfinnished Tales". Most of the last one in particular play in the 2nd age - around 6000 to 3000 years before the events of "The Lord of the Rings", i.e. around the time in which the series "The Rings of Power" takes place. The "RoP" series has mixed a lot of events from the second and third ages, sometimes very "daring", so that they have deviated far from Tolkien's original - but you can classify this well at the moment when you first read "The Silmarillion" and "Unfinnished Tales" (perhaps also the newly published book "The Fall of Numenor", which deals in more detail with the time period in which the "RoP" series is set). It would be very interesting to see your reaction to the Rings of Power series! The series isn't as bad as many say - if you are prepared that it takes a lot of liberties with Tolkien's work and yet tells a few crucial moments of the lore in a very "compressed" way. Therefore: have courage! Read the books mentioned and then watch the series!

I agree with this mostly. I think the RoP is worth watching (if only for the scenery, lol), but maybe going in cold & just watching w/out knowing what lore there is (which isn’t a lot in the 2nd age) might keep expectations manageable? Idk, I listened to a few podcasts about that era before the show came out & I do think that helped familiarize me w/the characters. I’m still struggling to get through reading the Silmarillion (on my 3rd try!) so that might be asking too much. The Fall of Numenor book might be worth it though, I haven’t looked at it yet.

If you enjoy the lore of the world, I really recommend an audiobook of the Silmarillion. Beren & Luthien, Children of Hurin, & the Fall of Gondolin are my favorite tales from his mythos!

A simplified explanation😄😉. First we have the aeons of creation and the descent of the celestial beings into "Arda." Then further eons when finally the elves awaken deep in the wilderness. And even then Morgoth (Melkior) starts capturing, enslaving and corrupting elves. We slide into the first age which towards the end has 590 years under the sun and of history. Then follows the second age with 3341 years and the third age (lotr at the end) with 3021 years. Galadriel is then at least 6600 years old when she leaves Midgard, but with an alternative timeline for her earliest life, we get to add 19800 years.🙃 🙏

There are actually an old cartoon series about "The lord of the rings", but I haven't watched it yet and do not know, whether I should recommend it. For other shows, why don't you react W.I.T.C.H? It is so amazing! I cannot stop rewatching it)

Saruman and Elrond fighting The Nine, whatever criticism you might have against this trilogy, made it all worth watching.

Funny that you made the comment, "I hope you're vegetarians" when the elves arrived. As on-point and accurate as Peter Jackson is with Tolkien's lore, I've never understood why he portrayed elves that way... They're 100% not "vegetarian," to any degree, really... They don't have "agriculture" or farms in the way that humans do... they're primarily hunters... (You don't become expert archers to pick lettuce!)... Their primary diet is very likely meat of all flavors of the forest and some berries... (Not sure where they're getting the carrots & kale you see in these movies... always struck me as odd...)

If you can find the “making of” videos of The Desolation of Smaug, check out Benedict Cumberbatch’s motion capture performance of Smaug, he’s really amazing! Plus, I never turn down a chance to see BC act. 😜
