Smaug was the SINGLE most important character in this entire film trilogy, and pretty much everyone involved in the crew knew that going in. I don't know if you noticed, Addie, but when Tauriel saves Kili's life, Arwen's theme song is playing in the background. It's a fitting piece because the incantation Tauriel is chanting is the same words that Arwen used to save Frodo's life in Fellowship when they made it to Rivendell: "What grace has been given to me, let it pass to him. Smaug has always been capable of speech, because all of Tolkien's Dragons are HIGHLY intelligent. But when the producers of this film were making it, they were originally thinking that Smaug would speak to Bilbo telepathically, and he would be very shocked to learn that Bilbo could hear and understand him, and would then realize the Ring was what gave Bilbo that ability, as you initially thought was happening, Addie. But then they decided, "No, Smaug has to be physically speaking. A psychic conversation just doesn't work."

If no one ever mentioned it, there is a brief clip in Laketown where the camera pans left with a guy with an eye patch who is supposed to be the spy. That spy was played by Stephen Colbert, who impressed Jackson on his show with his ultra nerdy knowledge about the Middle Earth lore and so Jackson invited him to New Zealand for a spot. Stephen has sword props from the movies.

The Dragons in Tolkiens works are more or less like the dragons in germanic and nordic myths - and dragons in these myths are intelligent and capable of speech (like Nidhoggr in nordic mythology or Fafnir, the dragon slain by Siegfried/Sigurd).

@@CChissel What I don't like about the Hobbit movies is this: 1) The slapstick comedy. That doesn't fit, it doesn't feel right for a Tolkien adaptation. It's great in Jackie Chan movies or Marvel stuff, but not in a Tolkien adaptation. 2) The forced romance. There's nothing like that in the book, and the story doesn't need it. I have no issues with the introduction of the character of Tauriel, but why did they squeeze this unnessary romance into the story? 3) Legolas doesn't appear in the book and neither should he have appeared in the movies.
@CChissel
@CChissel 2 года назад
@@HH-hd7nd I wasn’t talking about the movies, I was talking about his actual writings, but I get your reasons for not liking the hobbit movies, but I think it’s more about the way the movie is paced and heavy use of cgi, some of it a little jarring. The LOTR movies changed quite a bit of things too, things I’m unhappy about, but it’s still a good movie because of the pacing and the way it’s filmed as well as the casts chemistry with each other. So I find it a little hypocritical when people say they disliked the hobbit movies for changing things, but love the LOTR movies when they changed a lot.

What has always really terrified me about Smaug was when he speaks you can definitely tell there is an intelligence there and that he's not just an animal attracted to shiny things. What really drives home the terror about him is you can easily see the malevolence in his character and that he is a true sadist (he enjoys causing pain and suffering to those he feels are beneath him, which is just about everyone) One final terrifying thought is that Smaug isn't the biggest dragon in Middle Earth. The biggest dragon was Ancalagon the Black from the Frist Age, was said to be over 100 times bigger than Smaug. If Smaug claimed to be King Under The Mountain, Ancalagon was the mountain itself

Smaug is a smaller dragon than those of the First Age. And there were lots of them, as well as multiple Balrogs, all under the command of the first Dark Lord, to whom Sauron was only a lieutenant. Yeah, no wonder the Elves lost their war against HIM. They were rescued by the powers of the West, the Valar (in effect the Gods) and a big chunk of the continent was destroyed in the process. That is why they sent the Wizards this time, to avoid that kind of destruction. Galadriel lived in the First Age, and saw all her brothers die in that war.

The thing to consider about Legolas is this is about 60 years before LOTR, so you could assume he would be younger, a bit brasher, more quick to judge. As for Smaug, the dragons were Morgoth's greatest creation (technically not a creation but a corruption as Eru Illuvatar is the only one that can really create life, basically god). Galurung, Ancalagon the Black, Smaug, and a lot more unnamed ones wreaked havoc during the First Age wars. Smaug just happened to be the only one that survived to the end of the Third Age.

Despite the many merits of the special effects, one thing that has never sat well with me is Legolas's skirmish with the fearsome Bolg. It should be a contest of brute strength vs agility and speed, but is badly choreographed.They end up practically having a sumo match. At least we finally get to see a tender side of Tauriel, as a powerful healer instead of just another Elf warrior. The producers insisted on a strong female character, so she's purely a non-Tolkien invention. Keep 'em coming, babe.

One good thing I can say about these movies is that Smaugs voice had the entire cinema shaking when I first watched it. In general Smaug was really well done, the biggest problem is the overabundance of overly long cgi action scenes that strain credulity and start to bore. I get why they wanted the dwarves to fight Smaug here but they should have gone for something more realistic and shorter. They also shouldn't have had Bombur ride a cgi barrel over the river for god knows how long of do most of the other insane stunts that break the audiences suspension of disbelief. People pretend the love story and additions like that are what made these movies sub-par, but no, it's the action.
@sigururmagni1730
@sigururmagni1730 2 года назад
Although I agree with the action scenes I still think that the love triangle thingy was too much. For me it makes the true love stories between Aragorn and Arwen, Beren and Luthien, Tour and Idril. Those cross-race love stories meant something in the legendarium and made such a differance to the story + the love between elves and men is possible since they are more biologicly alike and both children og Ilúvitar, while dwarves are a creation of Aulë and Ilúvitar merely accepted them almost as his step children if you can call them that.
@k.v.7681
@k.v.7681 2 года назад
I'd say it's both. And you will have diehard people of a certain kind argue for the entire removal of Tauriel. Reality is, Tauriel, as she was first imagined, was ok. They tricked the actress into that love triangle. She had specifically asked them not to make one. The movie had her as a sylvan elf conscious of her station in the realm, with a strong sense of bravery and duty as well as fighting skills, devellop nothing more than a great mutual friendship. They called her for reshoots, which is common for all movies, but sent her the additional scene scripts very shortly before those reshoots. All the wonky love stuff was done in reshoots. She was basically stuck and they shoehorned that damn thing in.
@DutchDread
@DutchDread 2 года назад
@@k.v.7681 The reason the general idea of the love plot doesn't bother me is that I understand the need to add in plots for the dwarves. In the books the dwarves are mostly interchangeable funny names to appeal to young readers, for the movies they'd need to be fleshed out, and since every dwarf is male the idea of adding in a female character through that dynamic feels reasonable. The problem is the execution. Too much time was spent on it, which just left less time for the other dwarves, and like the other commenter mentioned, dwarves were made by Aule and it arguably infringes on the territory of Aragorn and Beren. That having been said, I still think a story about how it couldn't work is still totally fine, especially since Gimli shows that attraction from a dwarf to and elf isn't off the table.
@SleepySloth2705
@SleepySloth2705 2 года назад
Fun fact: Tolkien's inspiration for Smaug came from the norse tale of Fafnir, a dwarf who out of greed transformed himself into a dragon to guard his massive treasure-hoard, only to be slain by the tenacious boy Sigurd(or Sigfried as he's known in german and english). This story is also where the trope of dragons being gold-addicted hoarders came from.

Things really start to go off the rails with this one. The dwarves trying to _fight_ Smaug? Legolas? He wasn't in the book at all. There's something a bit off in the way Legolas looks in the Hobbit movies. I know that sounds petty, but in LOTR he looks very young and fresh-faced and had that ageless quality elves are meant to have. In these movies he looks kind of - fake. Its his face I think, he doesn't seem to have any expressions and looks like a CGI character. I get that these movies were made like 12 years after LOTR, and the actor would be older, but he doesn't just look older, he looks like a got plastic sugery and can't move half his face.

Why cliffhangers? The first three films, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, were based on one book each. That's why they did not end in cliffhangers since they ended the main story of each book, and with the knowledge that the overall story arc was to resume in the next film. Here, all three films are extrapolated from a single, smaller book written for children! (Although the films are marketed as a prequel trilogy, that book was actually written first.) So they had to take a lot of liberties with the story to stretch it to a trilogy because, well, there are shitloads of money to be made from trilogies! And cliffhangers are how they get you back in the cinema, a year later, despite the fact that it takes 3 movies to tell a single story that should have fit into one film. And, of course, you will have no real satisfaction until it is all over.

Are you sure you want to jump into the next episode?.To get the true experience as Peter Jackson intended, try waiting an entire year instead. It was a hard time, lass, a very hard time. -Virginia Beach

Funny you should mention about if feeling like a real life history, Tolkien wrote middle earth as a English mythology since on the whole England doesn't really have one.

The Silmarillion reads a bit like a history book, and a bit like a bible of Tolkien's world.

you should watch the behind the scenes of Benedict Cumberbatch's performance for the voice of Smaug. even though they didn't use the footage, Benedict wore a motion capture suit while he performed the voice, and he moved around like a dragon! the way he was able to just throw himself into the character like that makes me appreciate the performance that much more. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sXN9IHrnVVU.html
