16 bore - Also known as “The Gentleman’s cartridge”, and for good reason. B.Rizzini do a competition O/U aptly called a “Competition 16”. I have one and shoot registered sporting with absolutely no detriment to my averages. As you say, the pattern is superb and the 1 ounce (28g) load as permitted in registered comps couldn’t be a better match. As for cartridge availability, just get yourself organised and ask your dealer to get the correct ones in stock. If you buy them regularly and use them, they will stock them for you and any other enlightened shooters, of which there are more than you will be aware. Keep the classic English S/S for your game shooting. They are a delight to carry and to shoot with. You’ll never be “under gunned” but will always have greater satisfaction when people give you praise after the drives. Try one, you may find yourself amazed. 👍

@@roymartingunsmiths814 If ever you find yourself in Devon, let me know. You’ll be welcome. Sadly, you are further away than I travel to shoots these days. If not, Nick at Honesberie May have one, or contact Edward King at ASI. They had a demonstrator they sent down to me before ordering mine with my personal specifications. A very good way to personalise your gun. It really does shoot like a dream and surprises a few when they find out it’s “only a 16 bore!” 😉

16ga was always my uncle Garys favorite shot gun. I inherited it when he passed. I need to replace the stock. It originally had a poly choke on it, but he blew it off year's ago. Now it's open bore and is still a pheasant slayer.

"Square load" means the shot column is equal in height and diameter when moving through the barrel. E.g, a square load for a 20b should be 7/8 oz, 16b 1oz, 12b 1-1/8oz.
@vincentalessi1307
@vincentalessi1307 2 месяца назад
Indeed I agree, square load refers to the dimensions of shot load in the cartridge. There is a ratio of diameter of shot column inside the listed cartridge compared to the length, and the 16 has the best ratio. The 28 gauge comes close to this ideal ratio, with 3/4 oz. loads. In muzzleloader days, the so called misnamed square load was 82 grains of black powder and 1 oz of shot (volumetrically the same volume). BUT 82 grains is 3 drams, too fast for unprotected shot. A better patterning combination is 72 grains (2-1/2 drams) and 1 oz. The old timers declared, "less powder, more lead, shoots far, kills dead."

We have an old 16 Gauge (Bore). When I was a youngster, the 16 was very common. Just about everyone who hunted birds seemed to have at least one 16 gauge. But today, in Western Canada at least, the 16 Gauge is rarer than the Saskatchewan Seal.

The 1 oz piece - 28 gram 6 or 28 gram 5 for game out of a 16 bore to get the ‘perfect pattern’? Thanks for the help

Interesting, I shoot 16g at game, 25g and 28g #6 & #5 fibre loads. I’ve three, an Alec Martin non ejector the first one I bought and I’ve shot everything with it. Webley 700 that has 2 3/4” chambers, the reason I bought it and a James Crockart of Blair that is my go to game gun, three are lightly choked, 1/4 & 3/8 and I’ve never felt “under choked” even on high partridge & pheasants. I’d be interested in what chokes are in the guns you have.

Wooww... I am positively surrprized! Me and my dad think the same! I, as well grew up with a 16 bore O/U, which my father bought 1985 when I was 2!😊 At that time nearly 40 years ago it was a shame to carry 12! It was considered to be too big and powerful for hunting.. thats what my faghers generation is brought up with! Needless to say, I am a die hard 16 ga fan!😂😂😂 Greetings from Belgrade!

@@leifnelson6705 You have a few options: 1. Phone around gunshops and ask if they have 10 bore carts. My local-ish didn't have any on the website or cartridge lists but when I asked them to check their inventory they had a slab in the back that they'd forgotten about and I got them at a good price. 2. Homeload, though components can be hard to get. Facebook non-tox forums are a good place to source components. 3. Put a post on the wanted section or look on the sales section of Pigeon Watch - you may get someone local to you that's willing to sell you some. 4. Bite the bullet and buy a slab from just cartridges.
