The best way I can describe the feeling is it feels like a knife dragging across your skin, honestly in my experience I never felt vibration or heat from getting tattoos which shows that everyone’s experience is different
Holy schit😂😂😂. Few days ago got my 5th tattoo and fr for me it feels like someone is scratching me. Not realy painfull i think hit you shin bone or toe is more painful
Got my first tattoo yesterday, and in the beginning it literally felt like someone just scratching me and only hurt really mildly. I guess I was also full of adrenaline at that point. Then as the tattoo progressed, it hurt more and more. The pain was mostly like the skin is really hot and kinda burning. Also the closer it got to the inside of my arm it was more painful than the outside. To get some context about my tattoo: size was roughly hand size, took about 4 h under the needle, is really detailed for its size, took multiple passes over the same area. Most of it was done by a single needle battery powered machine. Only the last shading passes were done by a 5 needle point. At that moment the more needles were a little more painful but not much than the single needle. Was the pain unbearable? No. Did it hurt a lot? Towards the end, yes. Was it worth it? 200% What helped me was trying to breathe away the most painful moments and also being happy seeing the progress of an awesome design coming to life.
I think the pain is almost always less than you think. I agree with the description of the pain feeling like burning, but I would add that it also feels like the needle is cutting through the skin more than pinching it (as I thought it was gonna feel). BUT after about the 45 min mark, the pain is super easy to tolerate, and, for me, after about 3 hours it starts to become way more painfull.
Just got my first tattoo yesterday. It turned into something bigger than I planned. It's an outter half sleeve piece that goes from the top of my shoulder to right above my elbow ditch. Turned into a 10 hour session. May have been a little much for my first tattoo. But in all honesty, it wasn't bad at all. The first 6-8 hours was nothing. But after the skin went raw, and the couple breaks we took, we went back to finish up with the white highlights. I won't lie, that part was EXTREMELY intense. But it was bearable. If you're thinking about getting a tattoo, DO IT. It's so worth it. Watching the art come to life is so amazing.
@@EvolveINKto me it wasn’t that bad just felt weird with the constant vibrations with the needle going in and out of my arm the part that was painful was the part near my shoulder my first tattoo was a deer on my upper arm near my shoulder the part near the shoulder hurt like hell but wasn’t too bad next tattoo I’m getting is on my calf muscle but was worth it after getting a tattoo I got over my fear of needles
Well, after I got a full sleeve, I can testify that it highly depends on the location. My outer forearm was the easiest and felt like an electric toothbrush. Similar, but a bit more painful was the inner side of my forearm (still like a vibrating, electric toothbrush, but with much harder brushes). So this was the easy part. The worst parts of my sleeve: the crook (or elbow pit) felt like a 1000 degree hot knife cutting open my veins, the elbow felt like electrocution and the inner biceps close to the armpit felt like a scalpel cutting open nerves that directly connect to my brain. Seriously… the closer it got to my armpit the more it felt like my tattoo artist is performing brain surgery on me with a scalpel that goes through my armpit into my brain. It was incredibly challenging for me. But I pulled through because I wanted this awesome tattoo so badly. My full sleeve was done in 5 sessions, about 8h each within 2 weeks (first 2 sessions in a row and 2 weeks later 3 sessions in a row). Something that I will definitely NOT do again in this short amount of time. For my other sleeve, I will consider at least 6 to 8 appointments with no more than 2 consecutive sessions. After 4 to 5h in a session, the pain just intensifies. So keep that in mind when planning a tattoo. The longer the sessions, the more excruciating the pain will be. But for me, long sessions were the way to go, because it was a guest artist, who only had a limited time left in my location. That’s why I pulled through with those 8h sessions.
FYI: as far as tattoo machines go there are two types. The older traditional tattoo machines are called coil machines because they have a coil motor in them that cause the needle to go up and down. The quieter type of tattoo machine is called a rotary machine, and they can be either wired or unwired. I personally cannot feel a difference between a rotary or coil machine that is plugged in or the rotary using battery power.
There are so many factors that determine tattoo pain: 1. Location 2. Pain tolerance 3. Mental state going in on that day, etc these are my top 3 for brevity. I’m in the process of getting a sleeve and I am struggling with my elbow ditch, inner bicep and armpit area. I don’t care though it’s temporary and the art is forever. There are ways to get a sleeve and bypass these areas I’m sure.
you are correct! i actually made a new updated video about tattoo pain where we hear from clients and tattoo artist! check it out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k_9RxZCjcLI.htmlsi=9fViXPaD1X9eXrBX
Just got my first one yesterday, I love what the artist did. He described it to be a sharpened pencil dragging across your skin, and then voluntarily allowed me to feel what it felt like before adding the Ink. It’s also dependent on where you get it. Elbow and knee dips / pits hurt a lot, but I did my lower forearm and it’s pretty tolerable - for someone who doesn’t have a high pain tolerance
For me, it felt like the sensation of rubbing a sharp pencil on my skin. As when I was in school it was one of the most fun things I could do during boring classes. To be honest, after the first hour in and after I get used to the pain. It was a fun very experience!
In all honesty, I got my tattoos in some pretty sensitive areas (inner bicep and middle thigh) so it actually hurt like hell. The best way I can personally describe it is like....a knife digging into your nerves, but it stops the moment the needle isn't on your skin anymore. As for my inner bicep it felt like I was getting my arm cut off but that tattoo stretches from a little bit before my armpit to almost the nook of my arm. It truly just depends on your own body.
I’m all sleeved up and even have a neck tat… tattoo pain is painful but not that painful especially depending on the areas you getting it at and knowing your body, everyone is different. And sometimes it can just be a irritating feeling, but overall no matter what just stay calm and focus on other things and make sure you eat good before a tattoo
It depends on where you get it. The ditch is the worst. Whether it’s the leg or arm ditch. My throat really wasn’t that bad. It broke out in a full body sweat when I got my throat done. But it was tolerable. But that ditch pain is something else. Definitely a 10/10. But I’m heavily tattooed & my tats were a piece of cake for the most part. My artist puts just the right amount of pressure. I honestly listen to relaxing music while getting tattooed & I meditate 🧘🏽. I also had 3 natural child births & I’ve broken lots of bones while in the Marines. So my pain tolerance is pretty high. The longest that I’ve sat is 4 hours. I think that’s the longest I’ll sit in one session and my artist knows that. So we plan accordingly.
It's like having a piece of glass dragged across your skin, my tattooist said it feels like a cat scratch to her, I was so nervous before hand but when she started I was like "oh, is that it! It's not bad at all!" I have mine on my wrist and forearm, was more pinchy on the wrist, on my actually arm, I couldn't really feel it.
It's different for different areas. For me personally my pain rankings out of 10 would be... Baring in mind, times are measured by how long was spent in one sitting max for each part. I have had around 70 hours worth of work done. Soon to add another 10 to that total by April latest. I have a higher pain threshold than most people as well. But this is my personal and honest assessment of what I have experienced! 1. Ribs front & back - 10/10 (This was thick black work not skinny writing or a feather lol) 5 Hrs 2. Lower back - 10/10 (again thick black work) slightly less horrendous, but minimal difference! 5hrs 3. Ankle 9/10 - Definitely not fun. Would probably be a 10 if I'd had longer on that area 45 mins 4. Knee. 8/10 - pretty shite not gonna lie. 30 mins front and back 5. Middle of back - 8/10 5hrs 6. Wrist - 8/10 inside & outside 30 mins 7. Collar bone 7/10 45 mins 8. Elbow - 7/10 30 mins 9. Shine bone 6/10 3hrs 10. pectoral 6/10 4 hrs 11. outside bicep 3/10 4 hrs 12. calf 3/10 4hrs
I'm covered and honestly I cant remember the pain, I think it was like when frying oil spits, it's a quick sting but disappears really fast. Simply prepare yourself for worse pain than you expect and you're golden. It honestly is never as bad as you imagine. Also prepare for discomfort during the healing process, it's not really painful, just an odd sort of throbbing
I got my arms done and my left side of my back done. Honestly, it feels like what it is. Needles just going in and out but they move so fast that it’s just a quick feeling I will say having headphones helps big time just tune it out, if it’s something you really want it’s definitely worth it, pain is just for that day, but great art will ask you a lifetime
I got a colorful sunset on my shoulder. The shoulder itself was very tolerable as far as the outline, minimal pain. Shading the sunset brought some noticeable discomfort. But when it came to color near the armpit...that was hell
personally found its mostly scratchy and can feel a bit nice in certain areas, but gets a fair bit sharper in the 'bad' areas (e.g. I had a bit right over my hip bone which felt a lot more stabby than scratchy) but 100% bearable!
Really great advice, thank you. I got my fourth tattoo last weekend. It's on the inside of my forearm. I've had two children so for me the pain of a tattoo is not bad. The shading part is uncomfortable for sure and feels like an intense burning each pass of the needles. My tattoo is beautiful, and has special meaning. It's flowers for the birth months of myself, my children and my twin Grandbabies. I will surely be back for more ink in the future. 💯
I like to think I have a high pain tolerance… to me it’s more like an annoying scratch… like if your dog or cat accidentally catches you with their nail. Or maybe getting caught by thorns/briars walking in the woods. With varying intensity depending on location and duration.
Hey man, I was wondering if tattoo touch ups require the same attention healing wise or if they heal faster? Can I go to gym after 3-4 days after a tattoo touch up?
This is a great question! Typically touch ups take less time to heal. Depending on how much of the area is actually getting touched up they usually only take a day or two to heal
@@EvolveINK Ty for the answer here mate, got another question if I may, my tattoo is fully healed right now, it's been 16 days I think, do I have to use anything? I have a nivea cream if it's any good
I was a bit anxious and yes scared when I set my foot in the shop but I really calmed myself. I talked to the artist a lot and in between watching RU-vid videos and listening to music as well. The first 4 hours were okay the pain is tolerable it felt like a warm something is scratching you over and over again and makes your skin really warm. The last few minutes not gonna lie it was a bit painful and I flinched a bit. I ended up getting another one on my left shoulder when my first one was done. So to sum it up it wasn't as bad as you think.
I have my first tattoo. I got a memorial tattoo for my 3 dogs. I have 3 paws with their initials in the middle of the paw. I, E, T My second one is going to be a light-bulb. Inside the light-bulb is a puzzle, blue and yellow and then inside the bulb are water colour's and then the colours cracking/breaking out of the bulb. This is representing my autism. I wanted to let you know because after i get it, im gonna send u an email for a review :) Im a proud guy and i embrace my condition and happy to have it on my body. I also want people to ask me about
For the first 10 minutes of lining, it's painful. Like a 7/10. The next hour or so of lining is "easy". I just went into a meditative state and it went by faster and easier. For the first 20 mins of shading, its pretty bad, but not as bad as lining, about a 5.5/10. The next hr or so of shading is not bad at all, probably a 3/10. The next 10 to 20 mins of shading are the absolute worst, about an 8/10. It goes in waves.
I have an entire thigh tattoo, hips, chest tattoo, forearms covered, and sleeve. Honestly, it depends on where you get the tattoo that, in my experience, changes how it feels. On my upper arm from my elbow to my shoulder, it felt like intense heat mixed with a bee sting. My forearms felt like minor bee stings that were not painful. My thigh hurt the most near my inner hip and felt like a heated knife scratching my skin. Near my knee cap was not painful and felt like a bee sting. My inner thigh felt like a heavy bee sting with fire. My chest did not hurt at all. And my hips felt like stings. It really depends on the person, but that’s my experience. I don’t use numbing cream as I personally want to feel the pain. But if you want numbing cream, there’s no shame in that too. Hope this helps.
i agree with you besides the bee sting part lol. i never really understood why people say tattoos feel like a bee sting. maybe its because i only got stung by one bee my whole life? IDK 🤣
I think it's really important to note that you have different pain tolerance at different points in time as well so you're tolerance is going to change on the day. Also don't smoke weed before your session cuz that shit will make it hurt more. Facts.
It really depends on the artist as well. Some are more heavy handed. Some use deeper needle depth. I've had both forearms done by different people. One was definitely a little more... tender.... than the other afterwards. I also don't remember bleeding on the one that hurt a little less either. I think the one that hurt more also bled more. Maybe that artist just goes a little deeper. Maybe that artist is going a little slower. Maybe my recent back injury is affecting my pain tolerance as well, but it's on the opposite side of where I'm getting work done
This video seriously helped me calm down, my 19th birthday is coming up and a few days before it on the 22nd I'm getting a tattoo, I did exactly what you said wasn't a good idea and searched so much about it, but this video made me feel so much better, thank you!
I got a tattoo recently and the pain is not that bad. got my inner forearm done and the only bit that was a lil uncomfortable was the wrist and inner elbow.
Just got done with my latest tattoo. It just felt like an annoying jab of a needle over and over. I was able to do some reading, so it wasn't unbearable. My butt was more annoyed from sitting that long than anything else. Lol.
I just got my first full sleeve this week, after only having two smaller tattoos this year. My tatoo artist specialized in using a more tradionional approach beacsue he mostly does prehistoric or early medieval motives. So he does Handpoke, which means he only uses a needle with no machine. Yo feel every pick seperately, so my own experience certainly varies from getting a "regular" machine tatoo. While Handpoke is less trauma for the skin, the nature of the thing is that it also takes way longer. That said here is my experience: the sleeve took 15 hours, done in two following days, with only 10-20 minute breaks after every few hours or so. On the first day everything was fine. We started with the Hand which was not nearly as bad as the tattooer said it would be, and while he did the shoulder center Motiv I dint really feel all to much. Yes it pinches and is irritated but it was fine. The next day I could feel my pain tollerence was slightly worn down, because I hadn't slept very much and was kinda rushing to get breakfast done and continuing the tattoo. This was the longer day where we did the whole midsection of the arm. The motive is a snake wrapping around the arm, so I had to twist my arm quite often. The worst part was a little section we on the inner elbow joint because the skin is very thin there. I'd say most of the time the pain was alright, but with this section I needed some deep breaths (I think I was in hour 5 of the session day when we did that) . So my advice on what to expect with pain if you are a beginner is: 1: Start with a small Motiv, on the arm or the shoulder. Honestly it will be over before it gets unpleasent, so you have an Idea what to expect. 2: The longer you sit for a big project the more unpleasant it will become over time because your body is like "Dude why are you still getting hurt what's going on"? But equally once you stop for the day ita harder to continue the next day. So depending on how many hours the motives need you should get a good portion done before you stop, because the next day the pain will be worse. So for really big or detailed projects it can make sense to what a few weeks in between bigger sessions. A good tattooist will advice you accordingly. 3. EAT, DRINK, SLEEP! You can make a tatoo a better experience overall if you are mentally sound, so its a good idea to be rested, hydrated and give your body good nutrition in the days prior and after your tatoo. Avoid stress, since it can also worsen the pain. My artist always hat chocolate and drinks handy so I could keep my mood up. 4. Please respect your bodies boundaries! If you just can't bare it anymore, or get light headed or just need a quick break ask for your artist to stop. There is no shame in That. Also cry if you must. My artists said that he has so many "manly men" who try not to cry or make a peep and therefore make it harder for themselves. Crying is a good output for the tention. Equally, I mostly chattet with my artist which kept my mind of the pain, but you may need something different entirely. At one point where I had this really bad spot tattooed I just closed my eyes for a moment and started meditating. I still felt the pain but it was not as severe. Certain calming music can help you to be in a meditative state quicker so bring some earbuds along if you need to get your mind of things. 5. Sorry but my artists said the same thing about women enduring more pain then men 😅. He is a man himself, and experienced more men getting irritated then women. And that's ok. So if you are a fellow sister, don't worry you are already one step ahead :)
Rug burn. That's what it always reminded me of. When you skinned your hand on the rug as a kid. Then when it's healing it feels like a really bad sunburn.
@@EvolveINK it's called TKTX numbing cream. I learned that I have to leave it longer time than what the instructions recommends before I get tattoo. It simply works for me.
My first tatto was across half of the arm. My tatto artist said, that I have some "ballz" go on first tatto this size :D I was expecting pain like pinching, but it was more like a cutting trought the skin. Ive heard stories how it will be painfull on some places of the arm, but ... it was okay. I can say, after both amrs done ... the worst part is not the tatto process itself, but the HEALING afterwards!!!
I’d say line work and shading are very different. 100% agree with a knife cutting you through sunburn…but not cutting deeply. Shading was worse because the spot is already irritated and sore. But 100% worth it if you’re committed to the piece. Longest I’ve gone is 4.5hr no break. First 10-20min are meh, then it’s chill. Then around 4 hrs is when I felt everything so much more. But not that bad. 10/10 will do again.
I just got my first tattoo on my inner forearm and it felt like a shard of glass digging inside my skin which was not pleasant at all. Luckily that feeling only lasted for 5 minutes and got better throughout the half hour and became just slightly enjoyable due to the endorphins. I cried also. But I would say the pain is worth it
I have 8 and my recent one was on my neck and I was surprised at how it wasn’t as painful as I thought it would be considering the spot but yea pain scale I will say 4-5 out of 10
Its not really comparable to something else, but it's somewhat of a cutting or scratching pain. Definitely a sharper pain. As for the intensity on a normal first-tattoo-spot like the arm, I'd say it's about a 2 to 6.
I’m getting my first tattoo in like 14 days I’m not super nervous about it. I’m just thinking a needle constantly going in and out of my skin. Tats all it is correct?
Appreciated. Getting my first tattoo in 10 days and im not worried, i just wanted to have a general idea of what it felt like, and everything i saw was the two extremes, so thanks.
Bro. People honestly make it sound so easy in the comments. Idk when or if I'm getting a tattoo, and pain won't be a factor in that decision, but I just know I'm gonna be surprised. Whether it is super bad pain, or I can handle it no problem.
just got one i have high pain tolerance its a hard thing to describe but it's like getting a edge of a ointment bottle and gliding it across your skin but add vibration too it. It is super easy to deal with MAKE SURE YOU EAT THOUGH
For me it was like getting a flu shot repeatedly, more annoying than painful but obviously depends on the placement. Getting warts frozen off my soles are still on the top of the list :):)
I’m a woman I just got the entire outlining done from wrist to my back None of it hurt accept when he got to the inner bicep a bit more and it sucked near armpit. But it’s noting that’s that deep. Elbow no pain zero inner ditch zero. Shoulder and back noting. My hand was done prior to this wasn’t that bad. But did suck more than this entire arm/back piece. It gave me the chills a bit but think cuz ticklish. Idk started at 1:00 afternoon left midnight. Was fine Mandala flowers Japanese work I got done. Huge pieces smaller ones. Have to go back for all the shading Black and white/grey✌🏼 Done be scared it’s not that deep. The near armpit sucks lol but was over so fast. It’s like a burn and a slice feeling. And I hate IV needless and blood drawn. They’re noting similar at all.
I get cut so many times on accident just by walking around my house and I’m not afraid of needles or pain in general and I’m not one to run for a bandaid if I’m bleeding from a long deep cut. so I don’t know why I’m so scared of a tattoo.
ive always compared it to getting clawed by a cat , stings alot. i had my hand done going from my knuckles into a sleeve for my first ever tattoo. Norse/Celtic style alot of black bands and shading . some parts definitely hurt pretty bad and some didnt hurt at all.
The wrist is def a 9.5/10. In saying that though I got through it. Have a half sleeve. Total 8 hrs. Can someone tell me the pain level of lower leg just above the ankle - mid calf is like ?
I think a lot of the pain depends on which part of the body. My forearm and calf barely hurt but my spine hurt a lot. My shoulder blade it felt like he was tattooing directly on my bone and I felt my whole skull was vibrating. Shoulder blades suck lol.
My three kidney stones were worse. Tattooing, for me, doesn’t feel good but it’s tolerable. After about 5 hours I’d rather be somewhere else. Arm pit crease front and back sucked.
I'm booked in for my first tattoo session in a few days. I am confident that I can willpower myself through the pain. What I'm more worried about is being able to keep still while dealing with the pain. Wish me luck.
You’ll do fine saxbend! I’d recommend you checking this video out here. It’s about how to make your next tattoo hurt less! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I-Li3tE8vxQ.html
In my opinion the needle going in isn’t the worst part. Its when you tattoo an area with not much meat and it rattles your bones and it feels like your bone is going to shatter
It didn't hurt at all (i have very low pain tolerance) So I was shocked when the artist finished. I was like: That's it??. It only bothered me a little like from 2/10 when he was doing details with white ink. I'll definitely recommend to get those tattoos done! They are 100% worth it ! and PLEASE don't take the aftercare lightly ! 😎
For me, it depends on when I got my first tattoo on my forearm. Some areas I didn't feel anything, but there were some areas that felt like someone was pulling my arm hair. Constantly, it was annoying, lol
Hey! No need to be nervous. I recommend checking out this video on how to reduce the tattoo pain! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I-Li3tE8vxQ.html
At first it's a hot burning sensation but the pain lessens as the tattoo goes on. It will be sore the next 2 days. Depends on the spot. My foot hurt really bad. Ribs bad. My legs weren't nothing
Hey, it's not completely painless, depending on where you get them.I'm not too sure how to describe what it feels like.I've had 2 kids & 2 lumbar punctures,I'd much rather get a tattoo 🤘🤘
I think it feels like a really bad sunburn to an indescribable pain that's very unique to wherever you're getting tattooed at. When I say indescribable pain I don't mean intolerable pain it's just such a unique feeling and again different parts have very unique types of feelings to the pain. Does it hurt, of course. Is it intolerable, no. Most pain I've ever been in, yep.
@@EvolveINK I was thinking of getting something done on my ribs, my inner bicep or my stomach. I’m just gonna say fuck it at this point and get it on my stomach
I had 4 kids all natural but was terrified to get a tattoo because I'm terrified of needles. So I over prepared myself and it was a bit painful but nothing like I thought I was ok in the end lol
Overall for me, getting a tattoo is not enjoyable but definitely tolerable. However, there’s always going to be a small part in your tattoo, maybe the size of a quarter, which will absolutely suck. But once you’re through that one part you’re good!!
felt like a sharp knife drawing across the skin, some parts i was feeling heat, the vribration was pretty minimal. Got my inner forearm done and especially the shading was more discomfort than the lines.
I'll tell you a thing with me too - as sharp and bitey as some areas can be, what starts to really hurt after a long session is the wiping of the ink between zaps 😂 owwww like hot sandpaper on already irritated skin! But the spray and wipe is cooling and nice. The pain stops immediately on the lifting of the needle. I kept this in mind towards the end of my 6hr session when i was feeling it bad. I felt like i really needed a leather belt to bite down on 😂 after that, feels like sunburn. Thanks for the great vid x
Interesting reading comments about different people’s experiences, mine was a pretty long tattoo and it just felt like a tiny bit of sandpaper on the area that the tattoo gun was on..
@@EvolveINK congrats to the chestpiece! 🤜🤛 Did my chest 10 years ago, Not fun for sure!! Did both sides of my neck last week. Feelt like ”kill me, kill me now”😂 I swear it feels like its getting worse by age 100%! Get at it when ur still young! 🤩💪🤙
Less then 5 hour sessions aren’t bad. After that Endorphins and adrenaline wear off and the pain starts to become REAL. Elbow, wrist, ribs are terrible. Basically anywhere without a lot of skin and muscle ( shallow bone) sucks! Extensive single needle line work is no picnic either. If someone tells you tattoos don’t hurt they are lying.
I got my first tattoo nearly 2 weeks ago now on the right side of my chest. It felt like what it was a needle jabbing me over and over. It wasn't unbearable but it did hurt but only for a few seconds on each letter.
