Throughout the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the Tudor monarch faced a number of threats to her throne including from the Catholic Mary Queen of Scots. There were a number of plots involving Mary that would have seen Elizabeth overthrown and replaced as Queen of England by Mary. The most serious of these was the Babington Plot, which gets its name from Anthony Babington, the main conspirator. Babington was a courier of letters for Mary Queen of Scots, and Mary gave permission and consented for the plot to go ahead. Elizabeth I's spymaster caught wind of this and then quickly Anthony Babington was taken to the Tower of London and was sentenced to death for treason.
He and the other conspirators were taken to St Giles In The Field, and a specially created scaffold which had been made to carry out their executions. But the executions were brutal, and Babington was hanged, drawn and quartered in front of a crowd that were there to witness the bloody and brutal proceedings. But the biggest effect of the Babington Plot was that Mary Queen of Scots was also sentenced to death, and was executed also.

My grandmother was a Babington. When I was young she told me family folklore of an ancestor who plotted to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I, he was caught and executed. I never sought to find out the historical facts behind what she told me until today, when I stumbled across this video. Thank you for posting this video.

A letter exists from Elizabeth to William Cecil asking if the executions could be made worse. He replied, chillingly," Madam, if it is done properly it could not be any worse".

In the HBO production “Elizabeth I”, with Helen Mirren, they dramatize this. About 65 minutes into part one, shows the execution of Babington, and his conspirators. It’s very gory by the way, pretty good special effects. I think it demonstrates just how horrible a way to die this would be.

From what I understand, the first day's executions were so brutal that the queen ordered the executions the following day would start with the men being hanged until "quite dead".

There's a pretty good H,D&Q scene in the mini series 'Gunpowder' with Kit Harrington. First episode I think.

@@MasonBryant The scene was okay. In my opinion, the only thing that I felt was inaccurate were his screams. In real life, I’m pretty sure the screams of a person being hanged, drawn, & quartered would’ve been way louder and piercing…so loud that he would have to catch his breath just to helplessly scream again. It was still a good miniseries though.

Can you imagine, being sentenced to this horrific and barbaric execution, and your reaction?. The fear and terror must have been overwhelming, knowing what was going to happen to you. What could be worse? The night before in the cell and the anguish. Another Insight into, the dark, grisly side of human nature, and our bloody history.

It's interesting to realize that this is the death that would have been suffered by George Washington during the revolution. It probably would not have been used against any other American, but Washington soon became the very image of the Revolution. After the war, Washington received a gift from a young Scot, a small wooden casket that had belonged to William Wallace. This Washington had returned to Scotland upon his death to be sure that it was not "lost" to history.

I cannot understand why some of these people got into the “politics” of the aristocracy. Surely they KNEW what awaited them after being discovered. I assume some of this was tied into religious differences. This is not a “good advertisement” of the sanctity of religion. Over the years it just contributed to modern atheism. Women were not hanged, drawn and quartered as it involved nudity. It was considered "indecent" for a woman, So women were burnt at the stake for treason.

Elizabeth 1st is alive and kicking, but in a lake of burning brimstone for the horrors she inflicted on her fellow men. A monarch who chooses to murder in a brutal way will suffer a worse fate at the hands of their father, Satan!
@nickjgunning
@nickjgunning Год назад
She would say it was the established law, but an innovation of hers. She only insisted on the severest punishments for the Northern Rebellion which happened when her rule was in its early days and very unstable. By comparison with her father and sister she was mild- he murdered up to 75,000, often those who'd simply displeased him and those who resisted her dogma. Actually, Henry VII was the least destructive. But it all shows how monarchy is the worst form of rule, as we see in Saudi and Iran, for example. The Stuarts were far more bloodthirsty, and the Hanoverians vastly increased the number of capital offenses with the 'bloody code', including using a forged coin or altering a will. For women the sentence was often boiling alive 'til the late 18th century

@@nickjgunning Nick -- Elizabeth I still features in the ranks of serial killer. Try pleading for clemency on the Day of Judgment before Jesus when you say, "Oh, but I only murdered 1,000 people, in contrast to my daddy who murdered 75,000." It's the Lake of Burning Brimstone.

@@nickjgunning The Hanoverians were constitutional monarchs who never once vetoed Parliament. The "bloody code" was brought about at the instigation of the upper classes but which was nevertheless ameliorated to some degree by the jury system.
