I just read The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, watched the movie about her, and reread her famous story, The Lottery. Here's a meandering video essay about it all.

Wasn't expecting Simpsons references in a Shirley Jackson video. Is there anything they don't touch on? :)

i didn't think the Haunting of Hill House was scary but depressing and I thought it was interesting how the ending of the tv show very deliberately misquoted the novel to show how they were not only straying from the source material but basically rejecting it's grim world and going in a different (and more cliché imo) direction. i loved both tho. for me the novel has more in common with The Turn of the Screw by Henry James more than anything else i know.

Great editing and critique. Off topic: are you going to do a video on Dune sometime? Would love to hear your thoughts on it!

Cheers! Dune is a whiles down the line for me. I'm doing a series of book to movie comparison's for a couple of Kubrick's films first, then I'd like to do a series on Murakami's books, as well as a couple of random video reviews in between, just to keep me sane...

I love reading since I learnt some 45 years ago so a channel dedicated to this is something I won't let pass. It was an insta-subscribe. I'm waiting for an analysis of Dune. Frank Herbert in my opinion is way better than Asimov and Tolkien (although I love all three of them). And maybe some Lovecraft? The only "complain" I have is about the v-sync line that goes and goes and the pictures moving like suffering from Alzheimer. Those things are off-putting to me. Sometimes I have to listen while I do something else so I won't get dizzy. Besides that, I love what you are doing!

Dune is on the list for sure. I'll admit to being a little intimidated at the prospect though. There'll be a lot to dig into.
