I love it when Quasimodo tells her his feelings for her, his feeling of knowing how ugly he is and that he would give his life up for her. Quasimodo is the only man is Esmerelda's life who's love for her is puriest and noblist of all.

Wow, Anthony Hopkins really did this role justice. His deformities may be a bit fake looking, but his acting really shines through. He portrays the character so well. It makes me so sad for him. :( And whoever played Frollo is magnificent as well! Passionate, dark and brooding, perfection! This may be one of the best adaptations of the book I've seen.

I haven't seen the one from 1956 yet, but I'll check it out. The Disney version will always be a favorite of mine. Not only does it hold up for nostalgia's sake, but for all the "kid friendly" elements they added or changed from the book, I think they did a great job with capturing the emotions of the characters. Alan Menken's brilliant songs/score are worth the price of admission alone and I think Victor Hugo would have loved them. And I like the changes Disney made to Esmeralda's character.

I actually prefer Disneys Esmeralda her character is more interesting and loveable and her look is soo stunning. And her dresses!

Yes they are! I agree with t5665yrty56! The choices Frollo gives to Esmeralda in the end of the novel are very much the same Erik gives to Christine.

This just goes to show what a great actor Anthony Hopkins is, despite that we all know him from one movie or another, you can barely recognise him here. Definitley my favorite Quasy along with Chaney and Laughton.

What a great film version. It's been about ten years since I read the book, but from what I remember, this is pretty close to it (except for the ending, but I won't spoil it). Anthony Hopkins is great as Quasimodo; I loved the scene between him and Esmeralda. And Derek Jacobi as Frollo . . . wow. Not that attempted rape is okay by any stretch of the imagination, but come on, I can't be the only one who got a warm little shiver at his delivery of the line "I must have you." at 8:50. :)

Oh, HugosNotreDame you are amazing! Thank you!!! The attemped "rape" scene was incredabal! This Frollo is so well portrayed. So diffrent than any other! Alot like the compassionate book version of him! He speaks of love, his feelings are not of lust alone....:)~

I love the 23 and 39 film versions. But this was the first one I ever saw as a kid, and this is the version of Quasimodo that I envisioned from the description of the book, and the basis for my own film version I made back in the late 2000s.

Well, not to give alot of the plot of the novel away, when Frollo found Quasimodo as a toddler, he was gibbering away in another language. And then after Quasimodo became deaf, Frollo taught him how to read lips and to judge what a person's saying by their body language and how their eyes look.

Given the limited budget and the time in which this was made, they do a pretty good job of recreating medieval city life, complete with mud and vermin.

Yes Erik really did love Christine, which was why - unlike Frollo - he let her go off with the man she loved more, Raoul. Essentially, the Phantom is very much like that of Quasimodo.

Agreed. I don't think the Disney version's perfect. If I was adapting the story for children, I try and stay truer to the source material. I love the music in it, though. Alan Menken is a wonderful composer. And, given that the company who made it is Disney, I think they took some big risks with even adapting the novel at all. For Disney, it was a very bold move, and the story stuck with me throughout my childhood and got me interested in Victor Hugo. So, thanks, Disney. :)

Are you talking about Quasimodo or Frollo? Because Frollo and Erik the Phantom are nothing alike, especially at the end of each novel.
@EmilyGloeggler7984
@EmilyGloeggler7984 15 лет назад
Actually that's not true - to a certain extent. Erik's love for Christine was sincere, but after he found out she loved Raoul de Chagny that's when he went out of control. But Erik never lusted for Christine, as Frollo did. He truly loved her for her mind, looks, spirit - that's why in the end, when she offers to become his wife - he feels remorse for what he's done to her, to Raoul, and the other people he harmed and as a result, he let's her go with Raoul and dies quietly. :( Frollo did not.

Thankyou IndigoReflections I haven't read the book and wow I didn't know Hugo was inspired by stories and people that he met in Paris I wish Esmeralda and Quasimodo existed but they didn't I actually like the Walt Disney Esmeralda better than this Esmeralda because in the walt disney version Esmeralda was smart this one however is a bit naive

@t5y665yrty56 Wooh, this isn't lord of the rings! Besides, read the book and pay careful attention, and you'll find he is actually just desperately in love. He is a very complicated character, hard to split the line of love and lust. Hes still my favorite, out of all I know. Edward Cullen can kiss his feet when it comes to true love.
