I really love the way Frollo is portrayed as a kind, well meaning person-In a way, I feel slightly sorry for him. He isn't so much evil, just an obsessed, twisted man with far to much power and lust.

Derek Jacobi was the best Frollo ever IMHO. He totally grasped the conflict between mind and flesh, the moral torture this character has to endure because of his upbringing and the harsh rules and prejudice of this time. But then, Derek Jacobi is one of the best actors out there, period.

the way frollo looks at esmeralda is soo romantic. love at first sight!

I love how awkward and shy he looks when she touches his hand @5:55! Sooooo cute! I know that in the end he's quite a dark character but it is his first love! SDJ is an amazing Frollo!

I love Sir Derek Jacobi here. His Frollo is stunning, very different from the other "versions" of the character (for instance from the 1956 one, though I also adore it), less dark and yet fascinating. Thank you so much for uploading this movie on YT, I've been searching for it.

I gotta give a honorable mention too "Sir Cedric Hardwicke" his Frollo was truly gothic, all in all Jacobi definitely owned this portrayal of Frollo.

@ShatteredxSpiritx I think Frollo is just a too passionate, lovelorn person. When I read the book, the part when he told Esmeral what he feels for her in the prison, I bursted out tears. What is more miserable than one is câpble of loving but forbidđened to love? But the way he expresses his love kind of scary. Quite a misfortune for anyone to have such lover!

Love this frollo :3 Such a beautiful (though very sad) story! Their making a remake sometime in 2011 or 2012! I WAS really excited, who knows, maybe Alan Rickman could have played Claude Frollo! xD And a new Esmeralda, Quasimodo, and all others, it left room for much portrayal and new meaning But then I heard its going to be an "action adventure" along the lines of "Pirates of Caribbean" *sigh* Oh well, I suppose I cant wait ten years for another :/

according to the original book, she wasnt born into the ethnicity of the gypsies, she was a normal french girl that was kidnapped by the gypsies who left Quasimodo in her place, so she really is only a gypsy by cultural identity

Well, it doesn't exactly say in the book that Quasimodo's birth mother swapped him for little Esmeralda (i.e - Agnes, which is her real name), but nevertheless your right about what you said. And naly202, I think your talking about Gudule (whose real name was Pacquette la Chantfleurie), who was Esmeralda's real mother (the old lady in the cellar).

I like how in this film they show Claude Frollo as a compassionate person who had taken in Quasi as a child. Other than that, this is my least favourite adaptation of Hugo's story. I mean come on, what happened to Clopin's character and why is Esme so sad and mopey all the time? Even if this is a TV production, it could've been produced much better - even the 1977 TV version did a much more believable job and it was filmed in a studio with just drawings of Notre Dame in the transitions.

the 2 disney movies based their lead girls on this part of the movie. in the first disney film, esmerelda danced just to entertain. in the sequel, madaellaine and her evil master did a show to distract the peasants while other thieves stole the peasants luxuries, such as necklaces, money, etc.

Luv the music at the beginning ^^ Frollo was thinking of raising his own personal slave, not charity. >.> Wow yeah I liked cartoon Esmeralda more, but I suppose this is more realistic too tho since everyone is saying she was actually kidnapped by the gypsies. And the guy at 6:42 looks way more like Frollo, just dye his hair grey!

don't worry, disney does that to a lot of stories, did you know at the end of the little mermaid, she dies? Infact everything after when she goes back to the water is different, and there wasn't even a villain in the original story.

Funny, I way prefered the ethnic-portrayal of Esmerelda in the cartoon-version from the 90s than this, I think it's more accurate to what a gypsy looks like. She could practically play a nazi she's so fair

@ghfakar I'm afraid you mistook the conflict faced by Frollo's character and depicted by Hugo with my personal opinions, which are not to be shared in such a place. Perhaps you should read the book anew to see what I meant, since that moral torture he goes through is the plot backbone. Either way, I don't care for little attacks like these and didn't even understand that barb about voting. So much for trying to nag me, I guess...

@idfgirl18 Esmerelda's actually white in the book, I think. The plot twist at the end is that she was taken from a French peasant woman by the gypsies when she was a baby, and grew up with them. What more pisses me off is that in the book, Esmerelda's fifteen or so. NO WAY is that actress fifteen. Hey, look, it's Claudius!
