We're back at Notre Dame for Goodtimes's take on the Hunchback tale. Prepare for Jetlag as this adaptation gives us more AND less than ever before! phelous.com / phelous
BilboKoira I have the book coincidentally and haven’t gotten to that part yet. So I guess I was wrong in thinking that there were at least two people who cared about Esmeralda.
In the novel Pierre was more attracted to the goat than Esmeralda. You can tell that Victor Hugo's works are suscetible to Darkness Induced Audience Apathy.
The first adaptation that has both Phoebus and Pierre, and yet, Esmeralda manages to end up with Quasimodo. Weeeell, come to think of it, she kinda did in the book. But being dead and lying next to him, until their bones turned to dust...
Frollo is a kind man who raises Quasimodo as his own son after losing his family. *Frollo is an attempted murderer and rapist who beats on Quasimodo for going outdoors!* Quasimodo attacks Esmeralda with Frollo, and tries to drag her away. *Esmeralda gives water to Quasimodo because she feels sorry for him!* Esmeralda confesses to killing Phoebus. *Esmeralda claims she's innocent, and Phoebus isn't even dead!* Phoebus tells Esmeralda he loves her, but is then stabbed by Frollo, leaving Esmeralda heartbroken and telling Frollo to kill her too. *Esmeralda realises she loves Quasimodo!* CONSISTENCY?! WHAT IS CONSISTENCY?!?!
A lot of those things also appear in the book, but the book has so much more room to explain the motivations of the characters. And in the book, we are meant to pity Quasimodo but that doesn't mean everything he does is good. He was abused and brainwashed his whole life in the book. No wonde he didn't turn out as the best person. Esmeralda did indeed feel pity for Quasimodo, but she still was afraid of him as well. Of course, she never fell in love with Quasi and she dies in the end, just like every other character except for Phoebus and Pierre. In the book, Esmeralda did confess to attacking Phoebus but only after being tortured. She said it so the torture would stop.
The two earlier songs are kinda good, but the third mone, which already is too bland and a copycat, outright contradicts the point of the story. The song is about how his infatuation has freed him, but in the original story, such "love" puts you in danger or makes you evil (funny that an adulterer did that point, but that's another case).
I feel really bad for Beauty and the Beast and Hunchback of Notre Dame. Disney makes one movie each for those, and there's like 50 fucking thousand knock offs and cash ins.
thank goodness they never got to make an animated Harry Potter.... "his parents were killed by the evil wizaaaard, he was always a wizard himself, but lived with cruel relatiiiiiives, he went to a school of magic with his new friends, but the dark wizard comes back to seek his reveeeeenge"
Aside from the ending and cutting out the reason why Esmeralda had confessed to killing Phoebus because she was tortured until she confessed, this was surprisingly accurate to the novel. Though I will say that this ending where Esmeralda fell in love with Quasimodo while not as good as the ending of the Disney version where the city accepted him and praised him as a hero, it was not as insulting as him either secretly being an angel, being handsome all along, or Esmeralda leaving him to rot forever in prison while she just walked away with Pierre. Also I can assure you that this opening song is never going to topple The Bells of Notre Dame as the best opening song for this story.
Too bad it's Sunday, Quasimodo would have kept his position as Pope of Fools tomorrow (wait, a character actually says something similar when Q is in the stocks).
the judge is deaf as well but hides it. Quasimodo getting punished and getting punished extra was the result of several misunderstandings created by this fact. he got sentenced for disrespecting the court when his answers did not match the judge's questions at all. It is a great scene in the book and I don't know if it ever made it accuratly into a movie
Goodtimes!Frollo: (trying to stab Esmeralda) Be mine! Me: OR YOU WILL BUUUUUUUUUUUURN!!!!!!! Weirdly enough, I think these versions of Frollo and Phoebus are among the most accurate in any adaptation. I can only ask why so many adaptations won't accept the love between Pierre and Djali. In the book, those two were the _only_ ones who ended up happy.
Count Orlok Subscribe to his Patreon and you get to see his content earlier. I just like to support him since his videos brought me a lot of joy during my stressful college years.
To be completely fair, add some actual character development, and this would actually be a somewhat decent adaptation....although the logic of being stabbed in the back and only needing a sling for your arm would still be highly questionable.
Really, even Quasimodo's likability could have been salvaged if he had questioned Frollo or expressed unwillingness or reluctance to capture Esmerelda, if not outright trying to stand up to Frollo, and have Arch Judge-Deacon Frollo hit him and/or threaten him. Then they would have established the abusive relationship between the two, and that Quasimodo at least has the potential to be a better person than his father.
@@DalekTheSupreme i mean, none of that happened in the book tho. he was never supposed to be a sweet likable angel in the first place. he never question whether or not kidnapping someone is bad, he just simply did it because someone he loved asked him to do
@@andreamess5345 Right, the original character is, like you've said, basically a puppydog who will go along with anything as long as someone he loves tells him to do it., and he took psychotic glee in causing others harm, like smashing in a guard's face or pouring molten lead on the angry mob. There's a reason Quasimodo was considered part of the Universal Monsters for the longest time. To be honest, while this is going to sound like absolute sacrilege to Hugo purists, I prefer Disney's take on the character to the original novel - the original character just kinda feels like a cruel stereotype despite actually being the most heroic character in the book.
These animated Hunchback of Notre Dame adaptations really missed an opportunity by not having a rejected Pierre run off with Esmeralda's goat, like in the original story. Even Dingo almost got that right, except there Pierre leaves town with both the goat and Esmeralda.
I guess Pierre just gripped Esmeralda's wrist with such force that he cut the flow of blood into her hand off, and that's why it turned all white...? Nah, not really, there's no way a wimp such as Pierre can muster so much strength.
wow. judging by the animation which is typical for Goodtimes entertainment and jetlag, I feel like I'm watching an anime version of hunchback of Notre Dame. and believe me if there was an anime version of the hunchback I'd be surprised.
15:34 Man, those 15th Century electric fluorescent street lamps were always my favorite part of this story, even more so than the blues-singing synthesizer-playing gargoyles.
For what it is, this has pretty good animation and is a decently accurate to the book adaptation - that doesn't make it a good movie, but it has a lot more going for it than the other ones Phelous reviewed. It failed as a movie by not establishing any reason to care for the characters if you're completely unfamiliar with the story and didn't seem to have very good storytelling, but I'm actually kind of impressed.
The problem is that they cared too much to be faithful to the book that they forgot to make us relate to the characters and make a story we can follow. The ending was rather forced and the last song opposes the message of the book.
Liezl Bohnen reminder that good adaptations strive to be better than what they're adapting which requires skill and creativity (Disney) while bad adaptations just copy what they're adapting because it's easier and they just want money (Dingo, Goodtimes ect)
Universe Artist "Be better than what they are adapting". Well, if that's the case they failed, because they were not even close to quality of original book. Albeit closer than Dingo or Good times.
A good adaptation can be very good and still be very true to the it's source material. In fact when the adaptation becomes too different it can be seen as failing in being an adaptation
Servo Augusta I mean, when an adaptation becomes too similar that can also be a failing, really whether or not it's a good thing should more important than how close to the original the thing is or isn't
Ridgwaycer and you can’t blame this version of the story either because that was exactly how it was in the novel. But then again in the novel they tortured her until she confessed to murdering Phoebus. Also Phoebus decided to not come forward and say that he was really alive until she was being led to her execution just because he is that much of a douche waffle and the court didn’t care anyways because they also believed her guilty of being a with.
Didgeree Media Truth be told the only thing I respect I have for golden films they didn't sugarcoat real life tragedies...I don't think goldenfilms would want to do titanic
Didgeree Media The only possibly good thing about that would be the Nostalgia Critic review that would come after. That would be like what, four or five at the point
His downward spiral was better established in the book He gradually lost each of his morals and became consumed by his lust for Esmeralda The moral dilemma he experienced was also explored a bit more if I recall correctly It’s been a while since I read the book but I know it was a hell of a lot better than this dumpster fire of a film
It's just like the disney version, just with a greater level of book accuracy! All it's missing is character development/compelling characters, consistency, beautiful animation, gripping music, well-done voice acting, and well tuned atmosphere. On the bright side, though, they did get rid of those gargoyles... only to replace their role as comedic relief with Pierre. I'm suddenly missing the gargoyles more than I ever thought I would.
5:18 HIDDEN OLD MAN! (Edit: I'm glad to see him in full again, and I hope he does read another Creepypasta) I woke up to this review, means I'm gonna have good times today. Amazing.
Why is Esmeralda, a french woman abducted by the gypsies as a child, the only dark skinned person in the whole gypsy tabor? Is she a Romani gypsy abducted by a bunch of french posers in this version? And damn, just because Disney decided to adapt a dark, Gothic story that's utterly unsuitable for children into a family film, it doesn't mean YOU have to, every mockbuster animation studio ever sans Video Brinquedo.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Well, yes, of course. The difference is that Disney somehow succeeded in doing so. But these knock-off artists, don't seem to realize that Disney succeeded despite their choices of stories for adaptation, not because of them.
The Disney one is based off the stage musical. And actually even Victor Hugo himself rewrote his story later to have a happier ending because the original is so depressing.
You realise that ANIMATION is not solely for children right? Or are you a idiot For those who can’t READ: I’m on about animation in general not Goodtimes but I thought that was obvious 🤦♀️
4:35- Sorry, Quasimoto, but we're giving the role of Spider-Man to Tom Holland instead. 5:18- HEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! 7:28- Or maybe what happened to Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith also happened to Frollo. 14:18- Stupid goat. He spelled "Phelous" wrong. Top notch on the Simpsons jokes.
Except for Esmeralda surviving her mother not being there and Quasimodo not getting whipped this is one of if not the most accurate adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame a lot of the quotes are directly from the book including Esmeralda shouting murder when Pierre gets knocked down
The 1982 live-action British version follows it almost similarly, but retaining everything from the book and following it pretty much to the letter for the most part with the main exception of the 1938 film ending where after being discovered and the gypsies come to the rescue as they battle the guard, Esmeralda escapes with Pierre (who she falls in love with in this as a shoehorned plot aside from the main one once rejected by Captain Phoebus) while Quasimodo creates a distraction and is chased to the rooftops before pulling Frollo (an archdeacon as in this and the novel) from the roof, then holding on to one of the gargoyles for a moment as he realizes he's screwed if he lets them save him, thus he lets go. They keep much of the dialogue, much of the themes, and is perhaps the one other accurate version besides this one. I personally consider it my go-to film adaptation due to the few changes not being all that bad and an homage to the few decent things from the classic black-and-white version that was almost in-name-only, i.e., the ending while having properly adjusted the love story (not compositing the two guys into an honorable swashbuckler and changing the genre as was the fault of the original while keeping the added romantic element that makes for good Hollywood). You should Google it.
Pierre: But what of me?! *I* would be the one to be hanged! Ursula: That's riiight! Life's full of tough choices, inn't it? Also, I've realized this is the *second* shitty adaptation that has Esmeralda getting together with Quasimodo in the end. But you've got to give this one credit for not doing the "handsome all along" fakeout.
Was watching a Little House on the Prairie DVD. Good times distributed them apparently. I snickered like an idiot. I want to see Old Man on the Prairie.
This adaptation just might be the most faithful adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame as well as the closest we will get to an anime adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Watching this I realized that the VA for Frollo has to be Scott McNeil, I recognize that angry raspy voice acting anywhere! There totally could have been more DBZ references in this review.
Is it wrong that I kind of found Esmeralda hot here, I'm mean she is definitely not Disney version hot, but she isn't bad of a looker here either compare to all the other women in these movies.
Ziltoid the Omniscient i thought pink eyes Esmeralda is beautiful she is beautiful at least unlike stupid ugly ass esemermelody with her annoying talking musical instruments Bleah!
Seeing Kathleen Barr was in this annoys me just as much as seeing Christopher Lee in the Beauty and the beast one. The Great and Powerful Trixie was in some movies she's not proud of, it seems
Hey, I found out there's an animated tv series based off The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. I discovered it on accident on Tvtropes, it's apparently called The Magical Adventures Of Quasimodo. Looks pretty dumb all things considered, so you consider checking it out and reviewing it... and no, I'm not making it up, it actually does exist (don't know if it'd be easy to find or not)
I actually couldn't stop laughing for 5 minutes when Quasi asked "Can I come too?" and then got kicked off by Phoebus. I don't know why I thought that was so frigging funny. XD
What is your name sir? Captain Phebis the Shadow Perv, at your service! The captain was right there to save Esmeralda only because he was stalking her!!
I'm surprised that this other than the Disney version is the closest to an complete version of the story. Better than the main character being handsome and having wings.
Interesting also that the little mermaid despite it being the movie that started renaissance and one of the most popular princesses only had one as I'm aware of.
But those came from Disney themselves, I'm talking about other companies taking the fairly tale and make their own to cash in on the Disney movie. So far all their was is the one good times movie and that's it not even a Dingo version of the little mermaid exists.
Your channel is full of amazing content, but nothing ever beats these reviews. They never fail to make me laugh; keep up the great work. YEEE HEEEEEEEEE
You say that Quasimodo and Esmeralda “ninja turtle” their way across the rooftops at the end. I’d much prefer to say that they ran across the rooftops a la Lupin the 3rd in “The Castle of Cagliostro”.
0:50 From the makers of "The World of Richard Simmons" and "Candy Kisses Natural Lipbalm," comes the literary classics you know and... know, brought to stunning animated Technicolor life!
When the intro kicked in I got a massive wave of nostalgia as I remembered watching this...then terror when I remembered what it was actually like. I was going to pull a "TO BE FAIR" on myself and say that they managed to get the most from the book into this version but then it cancels itself out by having that stupid ending. I get people wishing that had happened in the Disney version, because Quasimodo was actually sweet and had chemistry with Esmerelda, but in this? I was hoping they'd pull a "Secret of the Hunchback" ending and have him fly into the sun, never to return.
That does ring a bell but i'm not too familiar with the structure of Orthodox Christianity to be honest. Tsar seems more familiar a russian title and was sort of a link back to Phelous's " Tsar of reviews" joke, but I think you may be right about the Patriarch being the most senior religious figure in Russia.
"His heart was as thick as the sky"? So... his heart was so thin, anything could pass through it like it didn't exist? If anything, I do like the art in the film... not the animation, but the art doesn't look too (remembers Pierre's escaping eye)... it was okay. Very okay art.
Eh, the backgrounds aren't too terrible. Kinda bland an' empty, seems like. More or less meant the characters, but eh. It's a Good Times flick, so I'm prolly giving them too much credit regardless. I mean, it's sure as Hell no Disney picture! Better than Dingo, though.
Wait so Esmeralda is accused of the murder of the captain that is still alive and at the trial? I mean, he's still alive. Right there. Watching. He's not murdered Majin Judge.
I've started reading the actual novel recently, and, after reading some of it, the Goodtimes version actually seems to be the most accurate adaption. Granted, it's still full of shit like the others, but this one seems to have the most similar plot points and characters. Take that as you will.
5:22 Are we just going to ignore the blatant up-skirt shot? I know Disney had their Esmeralda a bit overly sexualized but at least they didn't take it to that level, instead they hid subliminal messages in Frollo's fireplace like NORMAL perverted animators XD
