Producer Nina Jacobson continues her journey with The Hunger Games film franchise with the fifth film of the series, a prequel -- The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
The story takes place 64 years before Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers as tribute in the 74th Hunger Games. Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) is a young man struggling to restore his family's name in The Capitol. He thinks attending University will put him on a more promising path, but his family can't afford the tuition. However, winning the Plinth Prize could change that. Given he's at the top of this class, the Prize should be his, but this year is different. There's one last test Coriolanus will have to pass in order to win the money. He'll have to mentor a tribute in the 10th Hunger Games, and he's struck with one of the tributes that's least likely to win, Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) from District 12.
With The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' November 17th release coming up fast, Collider's Perri Nemiroff got the chance to chat with Jacobson about her journey with the franchise, bringing Lucy Gray's songs to screen, her collaboration with author Suzanne Collins, and more.

I remember when they announced that they were gunna do a Haymitch spinoff, and honestly? I'm glad they didn't follow through. It makes me happy that they RESPECT Suzanne's work, and wanna honor it by only abiding by her source material. I have so much respect for Nina, and she is just spectacular!!

every time i listen to "Pure as Driven Snow", i end up muttering to myself, "dammit Corio! you could've been happy". and "The Old Therebefore" is so powerful and the way how Rachel plays it, i just .... i love it. the score and this soundtrack is joy.

I think they could have more into the Clemensia Snakebite story, because it leads to the body modifications. Like do they happen because people want them or because they defied Dr. Gaul/ President Snow and became a experiment, then marketed so that people wanted them, like tattoos. What was the reason for Tigris's transformation. A story about Dr. Gaul becoming the mad scientist would be interesting. The ending left it open-ended for another book or movie even without a book. I think A lot of people would love the Haymitch Quarter Quell. Also in the books, you really see how Snow wants Lucy Gray all for himself. Like did he ever use his power and found her and literally locked her away in cage like a literal songbird, all for himself at some point, or did she make it to 13 and become one our original trilogy's ancestors. In the books he even says himself he will never really love again like that and will only marry someone superficially, for power. So, the look he gave to his granddaughter when she braids her hair like his despised District 12's Katniss, is awesome. Who is his Granddaughter's mother/ or who did he end up marrying for this boost in his ambition and power.

Great great questions and great answers! It amplified my faith in this series. Tbh I'm a bit septic about the 3 main castings, I found them awkward in the trailers, I really hope I'm wrong. When the interviewer mentioned Tigris role I got excited because she stole my attention in the trailer, I felt the character coming through!! Also I do admire how Suzanne and the whole team are not milking the books. They really seem to respect the stories.

Wasn’t it explained pretty thoroughly in “Mockingjay” what the story with D13 was? (or maybe that’s what she means and she’s just referring to that story getting a full narrative of its own)
