Welcome to our first-time reacting to The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes!
"The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" takes us back to the Capitol's dark history, following a young Coriolanus Snow played marvelously by actor Tom Blyth as he mentors a tribute from District 12 that goes by the name Lucy Gray Baird played by Rachel Zegler. This film continues it's intricate narrative the Hunger Games saga is known for as it explores the evolution of the games. Director Francis Lawrence did a phenomenal job at recreating the atmosphere from the previous films. And writer Suzanne Collins brought back the political intrigue, moral dilemmas, and the dystopian world that set the stage for the iconic series.
We hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussions as we immerse ourselves in the storytelling that this fantastic film has to offer. We'll delve into the elements that make this film standout to us.

I loved this movie so much it was done amazingly. Lucy's dress had Katniss flowers and snakes on it. Every little detail. But you won't understand fully why snow is haunted by Lucy without listening to the end credit song "can't catch me now" Katniss reminds him of Lucy, he is so paranoid of her ending him. Great reaction. I loved the commentary and yes they did make us like snow. Young snow was such a complex and interesting character that with no doubt would have done good in the world if he hadn't gotten corrupted. Paninem (snow looking like Eminem) is where it went south real fast

I thought the film was great, a very well-done representation of the book. I read the book just after its initial release, and again before this movie came out (I literally finished the last chapter as the trailers were playing lol). I did of course love the book a bit more, as I tend to do, as it's MUCH more detailed, particularly because you get to REALLY be in Snow's head. Obviously, there's lots missing/changed from the book, some of it understandable, and others rather unforgivable (imo). No spoilers, though. I'll let you guys discover that on your own! To be fair, though, even the ORIGINAL films are guilty of the same book crimes and I still loved them too. Despite my grumbles, I do feel like what NEEDED to be in this film was there, so in that sense, it was a loyal rendition. Great reaction and analysis, you two!

Exactly! Snow sees himself and Peeta as parallels. So when Peeta continues to choose and sacrifice for Katniss, to genuinely 'love' her (unlike himself who turned on Lucy Gray for his own gain) he tortures Peeta and brainwashes him to villainize Katniss in his mind, to 'open his eyes' and see her for who she really is. The same way he justifies turning on Lucy in the book, convincing himself he didn't really know her and that she was probably manipulating him all along.

I love having that insight now, because Snow's line that Katniss didn't deserve Peeta always stuck with me. Like were the cookies that good? 😂 It also adds context to his reaction to watching them in the 2nd games, when he realizes she probably does love him.

45:45 Yes, she was writing it about Arlo Chance, the man that was hung when Snow and Sejanus first started working in 12. And this song is the biggest clue to Katniss’s family tree, because the Covey only perform this song one time before it’s banned for being too rebellious. And Lucy Gray’s little cousin, Maude Ivory (the one who brings her the katniss plant), is said to be able to remember any song after hearing it just once, which is a trait that Katniss also has. There’s some other clues that Katniss’s father is descended from the Covey: the cabin and the lake the Covey go to are the same ones that Katniss’s dad takes her to in the books. The Covey’s house is located pretty much exactly where Katniss’s house is in the first book, near a meadow at the end of the Seam. Also, the fact that Katniss was named after one of Lucy Gray’s favorite plants, and a plant that almost no one in District 12 would know about.

@@OfficialMediaKnights Me too! If she ever did another installment in this world I’d like it to be Haymitch’s games! Not only because of how intense they were, but also because we know he’s around the same age as Katniss’s parents (or at least her mom, since she was close with Madge’s aunt who was one of the girls to be selected alongside Haymitch) so it would be a great opportunity to throw in a line that confirms (or denies) the theory about Katniss’s dad. Also, it would be perfect because then we get the full stories of all the District 12 winners, since there have only been four. Sidenote, I revisted the Hunger Games books after seeing this movie and reading its book, and in chapter one of The Hunger Games Katniss mentions District 12 having two previous winners. She only names Haymitch, mentioning he’s the only one still alive.

In my head I figured katniss was a descendent of Maude Ivory not Lucy Gray like other people do. I think this because of the things you mentioned along with the fact Maude Ivory was also blonde like katniss’ mother and sister and katniss says how only certain people (usually higher class) looked like her mother and sister. Katniss assumes (can’t remember if it’s book canon) her mother married down but what if her mother came from the covey (Maude Ivory’s descendent) hence why they live where they do and katniss’ mother’s hair. That’s just my head canon tho 😂

Lucy Gray’s ending is so poetic, because there’s actually a real ballad/poem from our world, Lucy Gray by William Wordsworth. The Covey have a naming convention where their first first name is from a ballad and their second first name is a color. Lucy Gray is the only one who gets both from a ballad. Anyway, the premise of it is about a girl who gets lost in the woods in a snowstorm (get it, snow?) and when her parents go looking for her they follow her footprints to a bridge where the tracks stop halfway across. The ending of the ballad is left a mystery, where some people think she died in the woods, while others think she’s still living out there and you can still hear her singing. The song that’s playing when the Covey go to the lake is adapted from the poem, and that ending is what she and Snow are discussing.

To be fair, Coral wasn't exactly an evil person or an asshole. Her true colors showed at the end. She was truly a good competitor. If you are in a do or die situation like all these kids, it is you or everyone else and you want it to be you. She didn't want to kill anybody but when you get reaped you have to change if you want to survive. It is especially brutal in the early games because of the lack of resources available.
@DovesEyes623
@DovesEyes623 4 месяца назад
Yes! Isn’t interesting how these movies show us how fickle we are? Just like the capital, we decide quickly which characters “deserve to die” when honestly that line from Coral was a reminder that they were all kids. She was told she could survive by staying alive, and while some chose to hide, she decided to kill others - they were all surviving in their own way. But then in the end to see that the capital would just kill them all anyway, all that guilt of her actions was for absolutely for “nothing”. Quite compelling.
@z0tw
@z0tw 4 месяца назад
@DovesEyes623 It was such a good movie in that sense. I would like to think that all of these kids in the games really, truly, do not want to kill. A vast majority didnf have it in them. It was literally the pack, along with a slew of other characters that got killed off, that were just trying to survive by killing the others while characters like Reaper, Wovey and Lamina were just trying to not do that and survive in their own ways. It really was an interesting watch. I hope we get more of these movies and for Suzanne to write more books. I really want to see Haymitch and his games the most. How technologically advanced that civilization is. In fact his is kind of a generation or 2 after these games and a whole generation or 2 before Katniss as well. Very different circumstances as well. Seeing how each fight works, how the characters go about the games, etc.
@DovesEyes623
@DovesEyes623 4 месяца назад
@@z0tw I agree. Each death was quite meaningful in depicting different types of children. Even Wovey at the end represented a type of innocence of a child “can we go home now” which is so representative of children born in such chaos that they still may believe ultimately that the adults know best and that this game would end if she hid really well. That part shook me as well. From Wovey to Coral, both children but one who had perhaps a few more years of life to recognize she’d rather hunt that be hunted, but in the end they both still had some belief in fairness from the capital. As for more books, I doubt we’ll get more. We collectively don’t see to do well digesting the themes she has already presented. I don’t want to see more games because then in a bizarre and meta type way, I become a spectator who wants more gruesome (though fictional death). I think Suzanne will write if she has a new message but I still don’t see many people grasping the aspect of the whole series and particularly the message from this book. If she does anything, I’d want it to be more about war and politics but given our current state, I doubt we are ready to have the conversations that she has so brilliantly interwoven into her books. I wish this book could’ve broken out of the genre into more adult as I think the darker elements were there that could have been explored.

51:09 That’s where the line “Where a dead man called out for his love to flee” in The Hanging Tree comes from. I always took it to be that the man was as good as dead when he called out, but it also can be interpreted as the jabberjays echoing his last words, “Run, Lil!”
@thomasnieswandt8805

The whole song was written, by Lucy Grey, about that man. The Peackeeper said "He caused an explosion were two mine workers and a peacekeeper died" So, what is the song about "They hung up a man, they SAID he murdered three" Whats also interessting, Lucy Grey is writing this song on the day by the lake. So exapt from Snow and Maude Ivory, there was noone there who could have heard that song EVER. We also learn that Maude had this gift, to recall music, she only heard once. So having Katniss sing this song 60 years later must mean she is related to Maude.

It sounds just like my home haha. It’s interesting how the “Hanging Tree” talk about snow as well. He “murdered 3”, and they “met at the hanging tree”. I love how you all caught on to how snow must have felt when Katniss sang this. It must’ve been a slap in the face about he wasn’t able to “erase” Lucy’s name from the districts. @@OfficialMediaKnightsI'm a little late to the party here, but I feel I still need to put in my two demicreds here -- Your suggestion about retelling the Hunger Games from Snow's point of view is a similar formula to that followed by Stephenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight book series, in "Midnight Sun", the retelling of "Twilight" from Edward Cullen's point of view. That might perhaps make it sound like lazy writing, but I think if it's done right, it could work, if there was another novel written to fill in the time between "Ballad" and "Hunger Games", switching POVs between Snow and Haymitch Abernathy, which would establish a relationship between them both that could possibly factor into the Hunger Games version of "Midnight Sun" that you suggested. Lemme know if you see any flaws in my reasoning here...

What’s so interesting to me in regards to the book vs the movie is that in the book we get Coriolanus’s monologue and it’s UNHINGED lmao but he obvs has to hide what he’s really thinking from the other characters to get by, and so we fall in love with him in the movie because he’s so good at disguising how he thinks. The book shows that he didn’t just snap from good to evil in a matter of like only 2 months; he already had some pretty sadistic opinions that, through his experiences, manifested more intensely.(My two personal favorites: when Lucy gray is singing her interview song on live tv, Coriolanus is having a hissy fit in his head because she’s singing about a guy that’s not him lmao, and he describes Tigris as “not beautiful, but her face has a sort of sweetness that invited abuse.” Like EXCUSE ME?)

The movie was interesting because it kind of showed how the world might have seen Snow, from what he says and his actions. Mostly good, and justified, with a twist at the end. But… the book is from his pov, and we are able to hear his inner monologue the entire time (which isn’t shown in the movie) and you miss how twisted, possessive, and ambitious he is right from the start. Even his “love” for Lucy Gray is because he wants to own her. And his “friendship” with Sejanus is opportunistic at best and never honest imo. I’m not sure how they would have shown an inner commentary during a movie like this, but that’s the one thing I wish they had pushed more.

I find it fascinating that Gaul views The Hunger Games as prey vs predator, humanity at its core being animal like. And yet, we see so much humanity between tributes (Reaper, Lamina mercy killing Marcus, Lucy Gray and Jessup) I really adored this film as a fan of the book (which I definitely recommend). There are so many layers to Snow and Tom Blyth (this is his first major movie role) played it brilliantly. Rachel as Lucy Gray (on her third ever movie!!!) was perfectly cast, she had that brilliant charming quality with this edge of being a survivor. Josh Andres Rivera as Sejanus was great as well, he was in West Side Story with Rachel previously (and are together irl). Sejanus a character with so much heart and so much guilt. The whole cast was perfect as well. I love how much this is just a character study of Snow. Did you notice one of the mentors last name was Heavensbee like Plutarch ;)

It’s also interesting that even 65 years later, there are still moments that show that our instincts aren’t animalistic. Katniss singing to rue, rue helping her after the tracker jackers, katniss killing Cato to end his pain with the mutts, Thresh sparing katniss (even though killing her would’ve increased his odds), Katniss / Peeta refusing to kill each other, and probably more. Also, Arachne (girl who teased her tribute) is named Arachne Crane. Meaning Seneca Crane is maybe her nephew or something (if she had siblings). And more obvious is Lucky is Caesar’s dad (same last name and the scene about the reservation with the high chair)

Just a little fun fact: they were struggling to find an actress for Lucy Gray, and Rachel Zegler didn't audition, they actually reached out to her themselves and originally she said no. She had already been away from her family and friends for a while from shooting Snow White, so she didn't want to throw herself into another film that would keep her away longer. But then she found out that Josh Andrés Rivera is gonna be acting in it as Sejanus and she called them back and accepted the role of Lucy Gray because Josh is her boyfriend lol but Josh Andrés Rivera and Tom Blyth (who acted as Snow in this) are like best friends, and Rachel said that when it comes to the two of them, she's always the third wheel lmao Edit: also, in the books, Lucy Gray actually sang that song that Katniss sang to Rue & Prim. Deep In The Meadow I think it was called. Sad they didn't include it in this movie. And Arachne's death actually made me cry in the books, since you could literally see what he was thinking, he was basically going on about how she might've been a bad person but he had known her since diapers and had been his friend nonetheless. Lucy Gray told Snow trust was everything to her, after how she was betrayed to get in the games it was all for her, Snow told her she could trust him, even so when she asked him to not lie to her he just went and lied in her face, and about kills above all, once there she can't trust him anymore ans she's in a stage where her life depends on it. Knowing he'll do anything just to cover his ass and her being his only risk, she just knows she can't be with him.

In the books, they don't have cameras in the tunnels so to the audience, they didn't realize that Wovey was poisoned or if they did, they don't know who did it. In the movie, there are camers everywhere except behind the fan. Since Dill is already sick, Snow's and Lucy Gray's cheating isn't apparent early on. If they kept it as Wovey in the movie, the Capitol would suspect Lucy Gray (and Snow) of foul play even before the snakes.

"The writers are assholes" I almost died laughing🤣 If you recall, the first man who was hung, he was charged with killing one peacekeeper and two mine bosses. I was so hyped in my first watch when I heard it bcs I immediately think of the Hanging tree song "they says he murdered three", but I didn't expect Lucy gray to be the who who wrote it. With everything that turned out, Katniss singing this song during the rebellion is much much more satisfying bcs it definitely irks Snow lolol I love Lamina and Reaper😭 Lamina has been crying a lot before the game began, she seemed weak, even Coral didn't want her in her pack, but she was so kind and brave enough to put Marcus out of his misery, she has tried her best🥺 Reaper has always taken care of Dill, and the scene where he paid the final respect to fallen tribute and covered them with Panem's flag is my most favorite scene in the movie! I wonder if Snow would remember what katniss is at all after decades, but the last thing Lucy gray did before their relationship crumbled down is telling him she will dig up some Katniss, so...I hope it haunts him when our Katniss arrived🙃 One thing to notice, Tigris who used to call him Coryo, in the scene after he turned to the dark side, she called his full name "Coriolanus" instead. Poor Tigris, she has tried her best to keep him from evil path. Finally, the cinematography is BEAUTIFUL, the performance are DETAILED. I watched the movie first, came straight to get a copy of the book after that, read it and went for the second watch next week. In the book you'll see a lot more of Snow thought, and you'll be able to follow the actor's acting even more. I love it! Edited: I forgot about the Ost. song "Can't catch me now" PERFECT lyrics for Snow and Lucy gray relationship. Pls check it out!

It’s a shame Snow eventually sidelined Tigris, because she out of anyone in the Capitol (other than Sejanus) seemed to have the most humanity towards the Districts. It’s clear by the later movies that Tigris is appalled by what Snow became and actively helps the rebellion and celebrates Snow’s eventual death. But Snow must still have some degree of regard for her because he spares her. Side note: By the later movies Tigris has to be at least 85-90 considering her age in this one.

I think Lucy Gray survived. I believe she was able to return to 12 after Snow left. As Lucy was the ONLY one to recognize Katniss, its my opinion that Lucy is Katniss' great great grandmother. And let's face it, with Snow being paranoid, he would have kept track of the family tree, especially since he would have recognized "Katniss", her ability to sing, memorize a song, maybe another hereditary trait brought back memories of Lucy Gray that made him tell future Gamemaker Seneca Crane to contain Katniss when she volunteered to replace Primrose.

I really love this movie. I have to agree with what some others have said about needing to read the book. I have read it at least 4 times. Snow is manipulating and conniving from the start. His inner monologue is disturbing and interesting at the same time. At one point he thinks he wishes he was back at the Capitol with Lucy Grey because there he could completly control her there. the thing that really gave me the chills, was the moment i fully understood "The Hanging Tree" when it was played here, even though it was kind of explained in the books. here, the first verse, which says "strung up a man they say murdered 3" talks about Arlo Chance, when we saw him be executed for the so called murder of 3 peacekeepers. the second verse says " where a dead man called out, for his love to flee" which refers to his last words, that were echoed by the jabberjays, telling his love to run. the last 2 verses however, talk about snow and lucy, the 3rd verse which says, "i told you to run, so we'd both be free" refers to lucy gray and snow meeting at the hanging tree at first light of dawn to escape or "be free", as they thought they'd finally have some freedom with each other. the last verse is up for interpretation, but how i personally took it, or imagined it, is when lucy said "wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me" it talks about lucy wanting to suicide, whether figuratively, as in "she wanted to kill her past self, and move on and try to find a new life" to which snow hasn't done by her side by basically going back to the capitol and deserting her. or she could have been talking about literal suicide, and she felt as though she wanted snow to do so with her, but instead, he tried to kill her, making the song seem symbolic i really feel as though its the most powerful scene in the movie, right after the "hunt" scene in the woods

I think this is why Katniss gets under Snow’s skin so much. It’s not just because she’s a rebel but because she reminds him of Lucy Gray. The same district, the same songs, similar personalities, Katniss is even named after a favorite plant of Lucy Gray’s. Snow is haunted by her memory, even all these years later. There’s a popular fan theory that Katniss is a direct descendant of Lucy Gray, and I could actually see it. It makes you wonder how different things could have been had Snow and Lucy Gray worked out.

There are a few theories: Lucy did not survive since Snow shot her and she died at some point. Lucy is a relation of Katniss. Lucy disappeared with the Covy. Lucy becomes President Coin. President Coin is Lucy's daughter. What do you think? In the book, the student who got bitten by the snake ended up with scales and snake eyes so it was truly a more horrible transformation for her than possibly dying. If the studios did the 50th Hunger Games and they had to recast Snow, I wonder if they could get Donald Sutherland son Kiefer since there is a strong resemblance and it would be interesting to see Haymitch's games.

clemensia was a much better character in the book. she didn't just take credit for the assignment. both her and snow were assigned the project. but bc of how distraught she was over the death of her classmate (like a normal person would) she wasn't able to participate. but bc snow didn't care at all, he wrote the whole thing himself. she didn't even directly take credit for the work in the book, dr gaul just said the assignment fell into the tank pls get it out. and she reached in to get it and got bit. only after that gaul explained the snakes needed to be used to the scent. clemmie comes back after this throughout the book to show how snow takes advantage and disregards every woman in his life. sad they got rid of that in the movies. it added to how messed up snow is. even in the beginning where you're saying the movie is making you like him. the entire time he's talking to tigris he's thinking she must've sold her body to pay for the shirt, but there is no way any man would pay for her because she's so ugly...

I think it makes a lot of sense. The Hunger Games are still new in this movie. They haven't had the time to build up cultural attitudes and traditions around them. The violence is expected, not shocking, so they participate in it more readily.

@@ambera7159 him having hallucinations isn't a theory tho. And since the ending was confirmed as one in which we can't be able to tell if she died or not, the fact that she would just start to sing after getting shot pretty much gives away that she wasn't in a state of like dying after it. Also, every time Lucy Gray (Rachel) sings, there's a really strong difference between her studio version and her live version, everything Lucy Gray sings in scene is live, everything in the background of a scene where she isn't singing but we hear her voice as music of the movie, like when they go to the lake, is the studio version. After Snow shoots her, we hear the studio version of the hanging tree, Rachel isn't singing it live, which again, pretty much gives it away. The production also said they put the speakers all around the set so it would sound like it comes from everywhere so it wasn't like someone could tell from what direction it's coming, so again, it's showing it's not made for it to be just Lucy Gray in the forest singing normally while hiding.

Snow saying murder makes him feel powerful is actually showing he already had an evil nature by himself, despite not being the monster we know in past films since moment number 1 just bc. We saw how the games affected the people of the districts, people like Katniss, Peeta, Finnick, Haymitch and more, but in there Snow just realised what he actually is, murder doesn't hunt and traumatize him, it makes him feel powerful. Ofc the capitol and Dr Gaul influenced and amplified his ideals a ton, but I like that tha author didn't just make him be a victim with a tragic past, it's more than that, he always had it on him, so it's a combination of both, he isn't how he is just bc of his circunstances or the things people did to him, he also took his own decisions based on those things for the way his personality is, his nature. That makes him more interesting, more complex, and let's us see that he would have never been a complete and full actual good person even if his situation was different, even if he wouldn't have got to be the devil we see in the rest of the movies. That's amazing.

Exactly, I never read the prequel book, but I was totally scared of him since the beginning of the movie, the actor did a good job to make Snow feel off and weird, I know some people can find hard to analyze that, but his actions to me were always narcissistic and like a true pycho, he manipulates people, he enjoys kill and he doesn't have any regrets by his actions, he acts just like he naturally is. When he's in the forest with Lucy and everything just switch, I would say it was just his true self getting out. His paranoia and train of emotions and thoughs, are not normal, he's mentally ill. I never felt sympathy for him, not only for knowing the future, but also because his actions were frivolous and in the end just evil.

Though not that well known, Tom Blyth was an amazing choice for the role of young Snow! It's almost like you can see a glimpse of his inner monologue in his eyes. For example in the book he's waiting to see others reactions to Lucy Grays singing in the reaping before he decides what to think of it. In that scene he briefly looks around at the people's reactions and then shows a little grin. And just everything was so good on his part🙏 I loved Rachel's performance too🌞

I hate how the movie changed Clemensia's character and made her seem selfish and greedy. In the book, the class nominated Clemensia, Arachne, and Coryo to write the report and they were supposed to meet up to write it the day that Arachne died, so Clemensia was too sad to write the report, but Coryo stayed up all night writing it since he couldn't sleep. Coryo and Clemensia both tried to make it seem like Clemensia was somewhat involved because Clemensia didn't want to look feeble to Gaul, but Gaul ultimately knew and assumed that Clemensia was of bad character and feeble.

Since you’re planning on reading the book I won’t give a ton of detail, just that it’s written entirely from Snow’s perspective, and his internal thoughts oftentimes don’t match up with what he says and does. This is something the movie struggled with, since it’s difficult to do internal monologue well on film. Because of this, it does make him appear a lot more sympathetic in the movie.

I definitely recommend y’all read the book. I feel like a movie apologist, lol but I am on Part III of the book and I find that reading book after watching has enhanced my experience on the rewatch. It made me appreciate the choices the actors made all the more. Tom Blyth particularly, for instance if you follow his eyes, you see much of his reactions to her singing are not because she moves him, but he sees how she moves others with her singing. That is an indicator of his internal dialogue. He’s perceptive and very concerned about how others respond. We see that early on even at the reaping as he looks around at his classmates. Also, some dialogue imo that made his motivation and views of capital vs district very clear. He literally tells Sejanus, “You thought they’d be honest” 😬 and he spoke about districts with such disgust that I think captured his prejudiced views against district people. I think the author wanted us to struggle with not wanting to sympathize with him because we know how he turns out but the larger issue is with people we meet in everyday life, we don’t know how they’ll turn out - so are we able to find compassion and glimpses in humanity or do we think we can determine who is good and evil? Suzanne’s so clever and she honestly has me gagged thinking about how I struggled while watching the movie the first time. Like I was generally surprised each time he did something crazy and then was like oh yea, this is Snow. I think Suzanne is brilliant in being able to take us through that dilemma where we are really confronted with what makes a person “bad” and “good”. Are they born that way? Are they nurtured into one direction? It’s honestly so much to unpack and I’m enjoying the book and thoroughly enjoy the movie as well.

The book was told from his internal perspective, which is EXTREMELY difficult to re-write into a film. When the book was written, she was never expecting a film to be made. They did the VERY BEST to take everything that snow describes going on, “semi-neutralize it” (as far as this world goes) and then paint this gorgeous picture. The difference between this film and Catching Fire or Mockingjay, is a lot more people have read the book. That is the reason the ratings are lower. I disagree with the ratings; I would love to see anyone attempt to put this story into a film anywhere near this quality again, ever.

The thing I find most interesting and fascinating about Snow’s story is how many women have been able to manipulate him and alter his mindset and behaviour over the years. Dr Gaul preyed on his weaknesses as a young student and ultimately turned him into a weapon partly if not wholly of his own destruction. Lucy Gray could see right through his ways even though they shared a personal connection. Later on, Katniss becomes a reminder of his previous experiences and all that he endured to land on top. And it was eventually President Alma Coin who was plotting on his downfall all along that took him down before she too succumbed to her own twisted thoughts. Snow has always had a possessive nature about him and he can become hyper fixated on his thoughts and feelings(which the book really highlights through his inner monologue) so as much as he thinks he is in control of himself and his emotions and thoughts and him thinking that he put himself on top by offing his enemies along the way, it is really the women he has encountered that are pulling the strings that ultimately made him the dictator he becomes. I also REALLY loved Donald Sutherland’s line at the end: “it’s the things we love most that destroy us” - Snow’s love for power and control is what led to his paranoia and killed him. His sacrifice to helping Lucy Gray win the games is also what ultimately made him crack and cross that line between good and evil. I just love this franchise so much! Thank you for your commentary ❤

Some of my favorite reactors. Lucy sang the hanging tree (based off the hanging of arlo ... But also similar to shows story of 3) exactly once in public and it was banned immediately afterwards. For it to have been passed down to Katniss's father and for him to know of the lake which was a covey secret then he must have been close to the covey. Theory is that Maude Ivory is Katniss's paternal grandmother. Other notes: Spruce hid the guns, not Lucy. Also Snow never heard Katniss sing the hanging tree in the MockingJay book. They specifically mention how they never aired it so they showed it to Peeta after his hijacking and he didnt freak out. He remembered Katniss's father singing it when he was young. Also also the snake wasn't poisonous. Her ending is ambiguous just like the wordsworth poem she was named after. Did she die or did she live on? Its left up to you. I recommend the book. Its good because you can know snows inner thoughts and it shows his paranoia and possessiveness in earlier hints. Also notice snow looks at the statue at the end and sees a rainbow on its lower half. Shows us that he still sees Lucy everywhere, reminds us of her rainbow dress.

54:18 "That's the poison, that's why he has blisters in his mouth" Nope, that snake wasn't venomous, just hallucinations. The Blisters in his mouth are there because he used to drink the poisoned wine he shared with the people who tried to take the power from him, then just get the antidote, but he made it so many times that they would leave the very sensitive blisters behind. And yes, The Hanging Tree is Lucy Gray's song, from Billy Taupe's PoV when he told Lucy Gray to escape with him before the reaping. She only performed it once, the night before the escape, and that's why people are theorizing Maude Ivory, Lucy Gray's little cousin who had the ability to memorize songs from only hearing them once, is Katniss' paternal grandma, because her father knew the song, and Katniss has Maude Ivory's song-learning ability. Eh... We don't know what happened to Lucy Gray Baird, and that is intentional. Suzanne Collins wanted to do the parallelism with Lucy Gray's balad ending. The fandom takes the theory that she managed to escape Coriolanus Snow and lived in the forest as canon.

I saw this because another film we were set to watch got cancelled last minute and I’m so glad because this blew me away! I was so pleasantly suprised and gripped. I feel like Tom Blythe did such a good job as Snow. I never fully trusted him once, but I did often wonder if he was maybe able to be good at some points. From what people have said of the book I think he made great choices in his portrayal.

If I remember correctly, I think the end with Lucy Gray, Snow, and the snake are up debate if Lucy Gray set up Snow to be bitten by the snake or if was just a coincidence. I think in the book, the scarf was on a tree branch, so it looked like Lucy Gray ran by the tree and the branch snagged it, or she placed it there on purpose. I like the idea of it being either a set up or a complete coincidence. It can go either way, it depends on how you interpret it, which Snow sees it as an attack. The movie clearly goes with Snow's interpretation.

The blonde girl at the reaping that encouraged Lucy to sing and that was with them a great deal, she also introduced her at the Jamboree gathering, I think that is Katniss' grandmother (her mother's mother). I thought it the first time I saw her, that it would be something she and other who knew Lucy could pass along some memories of her actions and music, especially the song she wrote.

So many are mad they didn't make it more obvious Coryo was self centered & selfish in his quest for survival (and equating it with power so no one could ever touch him) from the beginning or that we didn't hear inner dialogue that was in the book, however 1) just because it's inner dialogue doesn't means it's true - the lies we tell ourselves in self preservative are loud. So those claiming the book inner thoughts prove Snow was 100% horrible is still potentially not true, he could easily just be telling himself things & describing things in a way to try & distance himself from everything vs those that seem to claim he had no conscious in the book. Even Katniss said many things in her head that were clearly either her just trying to hang on or seemed naive & those could easily have a hidden underlying truth she herself would'nt admit, 2) not having any inner dialogue narration or more obvious traitorous acts early on means we see what everyone else sees, his facade, PLUS hear the contradictions and how what he thinks changes depending on who he is talking to (so he survives & comes out on top). Ultimately if you are starving and hiding from desperate cannibals and hearing a single narrative of who is at fault, you'd end up like Snow & the capital too.

There’s so many things I wish I could bring up that I noticed in the book and movie but mostly the book! But the main thing is how trust is more important to Lucy Grey than love and Snow to Katniss said “I thought we agreed never to lie to each other.” I see the parallels in his desperate attempt to relive the essential parts of his relationship with Lucy Grey because he wanted to try and asses his faults and how to fix it to regain control. He stayed truthful their whole relationship (his and Katniss’). Not that he didn’t find ways around the truth but anyway. Lol I think there’s so many little details in all the movies/books that add up to this story and Snows motivations!

Putting down the details from the book and differences between the movie and the book, I would like to comment on one thing you mentioned at the end. About the sequel. When you mentioned that it would be great to see the world after like 200 years after the last (historically) book. I thought about the idea of having a sequel how the new Capitol failed and the war started again between districts and the Capitol. Just to make a PERFECT LOOP to this book (childhood of Coriolanus). So that we end almost at the same point when the whole history started. To show that, unfortunatelly, mankind doesn't learn from it's mistakes.

It’s so interesting so see how people perceive this movie who haven’t read the book vs who have. The book is entirely from Snow’s pov so I could never fully empathize with him because you can see how every thing he does that appears selfless is actually very self serving. I highly recommend reading the book to see if it changes how you see certain scenes, especially about the relationship between Snow and Sejanus. Loved the reaction.

I’m reading book and I empathize with him at parts. There are certain parts of book where he comes across more caring based on his internal dialogue than in the movie. Particularly, his relationship with Lysistrata, His encounter with Bobbin in arena was much more forgiving in the book than in the movie’s portrayal which made it very clear that he intended to kill Bobbin. I’m on part 3 but I don’t see how people who’ve read book are saying they never sympathized with his character. This dude, even in book, was terrified and paranoid about everything. Being terrified and paranoid does not make someone evil, it’s the choices he began to make from that place, at the expense of others, that kept taking him across the line. But his point of view in the book, does give us a baseline of humanity for his character - witnessing war, his hunger and desperation are motivations we understand from Katniss. Even how he saw his classmates treated by capital I think led to his beliefs that everyone was expendable. All those are aspects that make him relatable - what shifts is his choices which I think the movie did really well conveying that. I think Suzanne wants us to struggle with not wanting to like him from the start because we know how he ends up - but the larger conversation about good/evil; nature vs nurture is for us to really question our views of others and human nature. I personally don’t believe people are just born evil so perhaps that’s why I’m not reading the book that way. I think we want to believe we can just tell someone is evil from birth because it might settle us more than realizing that everyone is capable of committing the most horrendous acts, including ourselves. I find I’m more aligned with Lucy Gray, in that I believe we all have capacity to stay on right side of the line just as easily as we all could slip to the other side.

@OfficialMediaKnights Lucy. In the book, she came across as a Mary Sue fanfiction character and in the movie, I was not a fan of the acting, especially the accent since no one in the south sounds like that. I was seriously bothered by that accent as a southerner 😆 That was the only weak link for me out of an otherwise amazing film.

also a theory of mine is that maude ivory (lucy‘s cousin) is actually katniss‘ grandmother which would make katniss and lucy related. In the books it says that maude is able to remember songs after hearing them only 1 time which is a very specific thing to say about a character that‘s not that "important“. Since lucy only performed the hanging tree once in public, nobody but someone close to her would be able to remember the whole song. And it would make sense that, as maude always looked up to lucy, that she would sing that song to her child who would later on be katniss‘ father. Also the fact that maude gave the "katniss“ plant to lucy, something she remembered lucy by bc other people didn‘t call it katniss. So it would make sense that she gave that down to her child that would call his daughter katniss bc it‘s something unique. Katniss has a beautiful singing voice even tho she‘s not much into music so she could‘ve inherited that from maude who was gonna replace lucy as the lead singer from their band. Again this is just a theory but to me there are too much coincidences and connections for this to not be a thing. Personally i think it would add even more to the story if the person that snow fell in love with and kind of played a part in who he becomes later, would turn out to be related to the mockingjay that brought him down (also considering that lucy was the one making him aware of the existence of the mockingjays)

Loved it guys! You guys talking about, “How are they making me like Snow right now?”: That’s EXACTLY how he managed to get to his position we see in the Hunger Games. In order to reach powerful positions, you need to be LIKEABLE. Whether it be talent, money, charisma or looks, people automatically like and respect you more if you have it. The thing about tyrants is that they don’t get to their positions by accident. They had to be likeable in some manner to get to the top. Snow of course used poison as well, but that alone wouldn’t have won the Capitol’s support. Also, with Snow being so likeable: it’s because he APPEARS likeable. He is a master of masking his thoughts, feelings and intentions. Whenever he lets the mask slip is when we think, “Hmm, I don’t really like this choice he’s making”. He has always had a horrific mindset, but he hides it well. I genuinely recommend reading the book. Snow’s inner monologue is absolutely unhinged and you can better see how much of a snake he is. There’s also a theme around Snow choosing between being like his mother or his father. His mother was a kind woman, while his dad was a monster. He initially has aspects of both and we see aspects of both shining through, but when he finds the weapons in the lake house is when he realises he can get rid of all loose ends. In that moment, he chooses to follow in his father’s steps. Hence why Tigris then so sadly says “You look just like your father.”

Most of comments were right especially when you both said that in the end Lucy Grey and Snow were paranoid because of their traumas. It really felt like it when you read a book. I would add only one thing that wasn't mentionted in movie. No, that last snake was not venemous. It's most likely just happend to be under scarf cuz it was raining outside and doctor who saw Snow after that said that snakes used to find dry places when it rains so no, she didn't put it in there on pupose

"What changed" Well, for once, he lied to her about the third person he killed. She said that trust is the most important thing of all earlier. So that trust was broken. Even if she loved him, that doesnt matter now. Then Snow finds the guns which means he will be safe to return. Safest option for him is to kill Lucy to leave no more loose ends. She doesnt trust him. So she runs.

1:04:17 Well yes, but actually no. Without his internal thoughts, the movie does make it seem like he cared about Sejanus.
