The Hybrid That Tows | 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid

Ford's Explorer Hybrid is a bit of a different animal than the benchmark hybrid in this segment: the Highlander Hybrid. Rather than trying to be the most efficient entry in the segment, Ford decided the fuel-sipping Explorer needed to tow like the rest of the Explorer lineup, unfortunately that seems to run counter to the fuel savings that most hybrid shoppers seem to be looking for.

Ford really messed this up compared to the Escape Hybrid that is selling really well. This hybrid setup doesn't provide any major benefits to fuel economy. Its slower and heavier makes no sense. This will not sell. This will be dropped in 2-3 years from lineup.

I think the real target for this hybrid is as a police vehicle. Add a little larger battery any they could eliminate a lot of idle time. A police vehicle with 30,000 miles on it has about 60,000 miles of engine time.

Wish Ford would have updated the software on the Explorers interface to the Sync4 with over the air updates and many other benefits. I hate when manufacturers offer system upgrades only at mid cycle refresh or all new models. At least GM keeps the system interface updates the same across the board regardless the age of the model.
@db4z09

A great application for this is police and other fleet applications that typically rack up a lot of miles and have extended engine idling. With even a 10-20% fuel economy improvement, after a couple years the operating savings add up quickly for the small incremental upfront cost of the hybrid. Fleet buyers don't typically care about driving dynamics or 0-60.
@ZealofSparta
@ZealofSparta 4 года назад
I had heard that was a consideration when it was being designed and it would work great for our engineering fleet that can also have a lot of idle time when on a job site. Now the problem with that is I don't think the hybrid version is going to be available in the mid level XLT trim which what we normally buy and we do not need the police spec either since we use Explorers for moderate off-roading and job site duties that need a large cargo area or transporting crews around and then we resale them after 200,000 miles.
@db4z09
@db4z09 4 года назад
@@ZealofSparta This may change as the cost of the hybrid powertrain is improved with added f150 volumes. Ford will also build special configurations for fleet sales if their is enough demand. Please contact a fleet manager at a Ford dealer with a large commercial unit.

I feel like there's no reason this needs to exist given its design barely gives any noticeable advantage over the base 2.3L turbo. Add to the price premium, this hybrid model is likely going to be dropped within a year or two. Honestly, the Explorer PHEV sold in Europe with a 13.6 kWh battery and 3.0L V6 twin turbo is a much more alluring package. Ford should consider that in the US instead of this 3.3L V6 hybrid.

@Capicu.
@Capicu. 4 года назад
@@AAutoBuyersGuide or a crazy thought... The term SUV and Crossover don't matter? I get tired of people trying to take terms originally designed for marketing and force a definition that actually doesn't mean anything. Once upon a time you'd just call a 4Runner, Bronco, Blazer, whatever... a truck. The explorer became the first SUV but no where in its name does it imply it needs to be "truck like" so today anything moderately sized that comes in 4WD with a big focus on utility is a SUV. The end. Crossovers are not cars with truck like aspects, crossovers are cars with some utility functionality like AWD and maybe some extra storage but they are mostly cars, personal transportation vehicles designed to travel from A to B with little emphasis on utility. No matter how you slice it that's how the layman see's it and no matter how you slice it the explorer to this day was and is designed with utility in mind. Which is why it is the most popular UTILITY vehicle among municipalities. If anything a crossover is a car with SUV like features, not truck.

Good review and comparison of the two. The 1.4 KWT battery 🔋 is too undersized for today’s hybrid technology. Ford should consider a minimum of 40-60 KWT battery and subsequently return the Explorer to its’ prior sales numbers. The Explorer should lead instead of follow!!! Ford should concern itself with regaining the #1 status of sales with the Explorer. It’s a very nice vehicle, but average will not bring in sales!!! I just picked up an ST coming from a 2013 X5. There is a lot of plastics, however, I would argue subjectively better than Honda or Toyota quality. Ford tried to up the soft-touch across the dash and doors. Finish wise there’s a huge quality gap, especially when I’m comparing to my X5. There’s blemishes all over. The door trim for example where the privacy screen sits seem to have unraveled like paper.

Easy clean rubber floors, a transmission/drivetrain you don't argue with, extra electrical power available and RF bonding, better final drive ratios, and it's designed to be modified. Gotta find 'em on a lot with a shipping scratch/dent though to get one new... Ford dealers are happy to sell you a vehicle but they can't currently repair cars due to a Ford parts shortage. Something they don't tell you when you buy a Ford. Ford blames COVID but according to my body shop (a nationwide chain) they have no problem getting parts for GM, Chrysler, Kia's etc. So if you're in a fender bender or a part fails on your Ford, it CAN'T BE FIXED. My 2021 Explorer has been sitting at a body shop for 2 months after we hit a deer and did relatively minor damage on it. Ford has no idea when they will be able to get parts and they refuse to pay for a rental car. They refuse to offer a loaner car. I'm currently in the process of filing a claim in Civil Court. Is it any other car able to shoot itself in the foot more successfully? One of videos on this channel proves better MPG towing with V8 Durango than this clunker. At least Lincoln Aviator PHEV has stupid power and some pure EV range. Also one feel where money went on looking at its interior and awesome seats.

Well to be fair, Ford may roll out the hybrid to lower trims so pricing compared to other similarly equipped hybrids (like the Highlander Limited or Platinum) isnt too different. Sure when towing the Durango may get better economy, but for the rest of the time (likely 95%+ of overall miles) this will get much better mileage.

I’d like to point out that my 2020 Honda Pilot gets 27-28 consistently on the highway, combined 25-26…and it’s not a hybrid…what’s so hybrid about this Ford? It’s MPG is trash even if it got the EPA ratings.

If you get 25-26 combined in a Pilot, you'll probably also be getting similarly above the EPA rating in most vehicles out there because of your driving style, climate, etc. 26 is 20 % above the EPA rating for an AWD Pilot

@@AAutoBuyersGuide I have the 2020 EX-L with the old 6 speed transmission (shifter). Sold the house in NY and went on a huge road trip to LA CA. We have the Honda roof rack and a large Thule roof box. So far we driven 2400 miles and my MPG with 3 adults and 2 children pls a trunk and box full of weight is 25.7. I was doing better 26.3 but the idling with AC on killed my MPG a little due to this heatwave going on now. Anyways, I keep the car in cruise with the RCC and LKA on and stay at speed limit.

Best thing about current petro enslavement system is An engine can rev safely constantly over & over under load & can b tune or detuned as needed & blown or tupo-ed again as bneeded all computer controled NOW. So right when we hve perfected the process oldschool engine sizing & all the things we need to make it work w/clean burn tech coming. So clean that u don't need a radiator or water pump except for heat in winter. So clean no need for emissions. So clean on unleaded fuel pollution not a problem. What do goats do create false narrative global warming give us more time & control to enslave u then GOD allows. They change the game & say batteries DC lost to AC 100+ yrs back. Batteries can't rev up & down under load. Alternator hve safe power output & safe loading & that is it. Electric motors can burn up easy as pie or cake when they get hot or prolonged use.

Ford has to fix all of its vehicles and shouldn’t have got rid of cars.

I agree. I checked one out about 6 months ago and I was shocked at how “blah” the interior quality was. Very disappointing.

So in essence, you would refuse a free vehicle which you could hypothetically re-sell at a substantial profit to a dealership or private buyer? Even accounting for depreciation and minimal out of pocket costs for yourself you could still earn upwards of a $30,000 to $40,000 profit. Turning your nose up at a "free" new vehicle doesn't seem like a sound business decision.

Panel gaps in this new Explorer are pretty bad. This new hybrid also fails on all marks. Poor fuel economy, no performance improvement over turbo version, heavy and expensive.
