Next video. The chaotic process of being hit by a giant torpedo.
@cleverusername9369

An old sailor once told me a story about his ship getting struck by a torpedo, I'll never forget the tale as he told it: "Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into her side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. We'd just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half-hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin' by, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry squares in the old calendars like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was the shark come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and sometimes that shark he go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin' and your hollerin' those sharks come in and... they rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour. Thursday mornin', Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boson's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist. At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol' fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb." I hope he's doing well.

There is an amazing amount of information in the comments here from the video game commandos here who don't have any clue what they are talking about. US surface ships do carry torpedoes but they are small (12.75" dia, 500-600lbs ea.) to use against enemy submarines only, they are the Mk 46, Mk 50 and Mk 54. The Mk 46 is still in use but is being replaced with the Mk 54, the Mk 50 was less than satisfactory and not in use any more. The Mk 54 supposedly can be used against surface targets but it's dinky little warhead won't do much damage. Surface ships launch torpedoes from Mk 32 tubes, mostly the triple tube mount. These torpedoes are also capable of being dropped by aircraft against enemy subs. Coast Guard Hamilton class cutters (we call them 378's) had the Mk 32 tubes and Mk 46's. We had a "trolley" system to load them but usually just put 2 straps on them and 4 of us just carried them by hand the few feet from the magazine to the breach in each tube. The breach of these tubes was a pressure sphere that was charged to 1500PSI and had a ring around it that was threaded to seal the breach. just inside the tube was a cable connector that was plugged into the torpedo to receive fire control info from the Underwater Battery (UB) in sonar or CIC. In the Coast Guard we figured the firing solution on paper and loaded this info to the torpedoes, the Navy has fire control computers and this made their life easier.

A battle between Japanese and US forces. And it’s true. The US Navy had a very unreliable line of submarine torpedoes in the beginning of WW11. Of course the navy brass did not want to admit there was a problem with the torpedoes and it had to be the crew making the mistakes. It took a year or so to get them to fix the problem of dud torpedoes.

@@scottthomas8894 Worse we had Ignorant Commanders who believed since our torpedo's could not be a threat then no reason to take evasive action from theirs. Sad we lost submarines to their own torpedo's circling back and many aviators and seamen risked or lost their lives to then have our torpedo's not detonate on impact of enemy ships.

I served on one of the destroyers shown in this video as the LCPO of the gunnery division. I will tell you that Mk-46 torpedoes are best used via helicopter. On Arleigh Burkes, shipboard torpedo launchers are absolutely useless and all but impossible to reload. The only time a torpedo would be launched from shipboard torpedo launchers would be if the target is already disabled. It is nearly impossible for a surface ship to get in close enough to a target, submerged or otherwise, to deliver a Mk-46 torpedo. The maximum range of these torpedoes is less the 2 miles, and on the ocean with modern weapons, that's almost point blank range for any navy. The launchers get loaded via crane while pierside at a weapons depot. If we had to reload the launchers while at sea on a flight II Arleigh Burke class destroyer, the torpedoes would be need to be staged on the flightdeck, hoisted with a chain hoist up two decks to the aft missile deck atop the hangars, rolled on torpedo dollies, that also had to be hoisted the same way, forward to the launchers located amidship, then lowered via hoists to the deck where the torpedo launchers are located. It would take several hours. My first two ships were Ticos, and just like the Spruance class destroyers, those torpedo launchers were far better located on the ship. Before my time, shipboard torpedo launchers may have been practical. However, especially on Arleigh Burkes, shipboard torpedo launchers are a design after thought of some old admiral from a bigone era, at least for Mk-46 torpedoes.

That's why they use ASROC. More than twice the range of tube-launched torpedos, using the same Mk-46 strapped on a booster. Nowadays of course, they come in VLS flavor, which is called long-range ASROC. But i think that tubes are not completely useless. When weather prohibits an ASW chopper to fly, you still have some means of attacking a sub.

The most powerfull torpedo is the Poiseidon.. It has he capacity to transport a 100 megatons nuclear head. Just for comparison, it is more than six thousands the Hiroshima bomb. It has AI, can wait years on a place, travel at speed of 185 km/h under water. It doesn't just sink a ship, but an entire fleet. But, if the Belgorov submarine is not so near to lanch one of its 6 Poiseidons, there is a possibility of the 80's airplane, but is the fastest until now, the MI31 with a hipersonic missel Khinzal. It can be launched at 2000 km from a aircraft carrier and in less than 10 minutes will reach the target.

05:40 love the suggestion that these tests and sunken ships could somehow be good / harmless to the environment, when in reality there's insane amounts of highly toxic metals, gas and other materials containing the air and water. I get the reasons for conducting tests, but let's be realistic on the shitty environmental impact, even if some people don't care.
