In Australia I was in the age group to be conscripted. They drew by birthday. My birthday wasn’t drawn, so. never had to go. Glad you survived it mate. The Aussies fitted in well with US Troops. Search for the movie “Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan”, it’s a tale of about 100 Aussies against many more VC and NVA, in an orchard near Nui Dat. Frighteningly real.

A lot of it was false hope. Amid all the turmoil, people really thought they could change human nature; people are still screwing up the world today while making the same assumption. But, unlike most of today's music, the music of the 1960s was great.

That was the post WW2 baby boomers making their presence felt as young hopeful idealists, looking to forge a better world than the previous one, which went to the brink of destroying itself. Unfortunately, we are now fast approaching another flash point in history, where the world might repeat past mistakes with potentially disastrous results. We need a new version of the 60's spirit of peace, with anti-war messages promoting alternatives to destroying ourselves and the future of life on Earth.

Every day I listen to the music of the 60s. There is nothing like a well-crafted song with nice arrangements. The bands not only played instruments, but also could sing. Today’s music is tuneless and grates on the ears.

Of course you listen to the 60's on the daily just like myself but I also must include the seventies as that's when I got my groove on, dig? Those two decades are so rich with culture that I am still digging up something new, though I've been uncovering gems for close to 50 years. To quote The Moody's, "No, I can't get it out of my head, no, no". Good day to you.

SOME bands played their own instruments but when it came to recording, the majority used the Wrecking Crew or Muscle Shoals sound studios. The Monkees were excoriated for not playing their own instruments on recordings but they were just like most of the other artists.
@tomc642
@tomc642 5 месяцев назад
@@littlemom2070 There is a misconception. Producers hired session musicians because time in the studio cost money. It was purely for efficiency, not because bands couldn’t play their instruments. The Monkees are a special case, they were initially hired as actors.

Great video! Thanks. As a boy in the 1960s who remembers most of the 1960s, including JFK’s assassination, I was right in the thick of it all and 1965-‘66 was incredible for me being a young mod hipster. I had tons of records, a Beatle haircut, we wore Beatle boots, turtlenecks and Nehru shirts, etc. All sorts of mod clothes. Danced a lot. Pop culture, then, was my entire life. What happened to it all you ask? History marched-on. Trends in music and popular culture dictated by recorded companies and the media, which superseded creativity and individuality. A bygone, unique, fun, highly creative, talented renaissance era never to be matched, rivaled, seen or heard of again.

What happened was what always seems to happen when there's an explosion of popular talent arising spontaneously from the grass-roots - the big-business types move in, find a way to monetise it all, and in the process smother all the originality. They've also destroyed the social order in which such an explosion can occur. Nowadays there's too many people worrying about how they're going to get through the week (or even the day), having no time or money to spare for exploring their talents.

But for us males turning 18 to see the damocles sword of the military draft hovering over our heads as the US "intervention" in Vietnam spiraled out of control, and teens in public schools restricted by "dress codes" and hair length regulations while the US Supreme Court declared the schools could enforce these restrictions. Another decade found further music, fashion and cultural evolution buried by restricted radio playlists, record label promotion failure and, according to rumor, orders from President Jimmy Carter as European "glamrock" and US "new wave" rock fell victim to obviously deliberate suppression. Couldn't have teens stepping out of line again, now, could we?

Save for us unfortunate males turning 18 to see the damocles sword of the military draft over our heads as the US "intervention" in Vietnam spiraled out of control, and students bristling under the dictatorships of public schools imposing restrictive "dress codes" and limiting hair length while the US Supreme Court declared they were empowered to do so. A friend of mine who attended parochial school the previous decade recalled being kept in detention for watching Elvis Presley perform on tv. Of course, everybody bragged about watching these shows, because you just weren't cool if you weren't detained for enjoying Elvis' "obscene" antics. In the following decade another cultural evolution in music and fashion was buried by restrictive radio playlists and failure of record companies to promote European "glamrock" and US "new wave" releases on orders from President Jimmy Carter, according to rumor. Couldn't have teens stepping out of line again, now, could we?

I bought over 100 45-rpm single-records (also several LP's) during 1965, which was the year when I bought the greatest number of records in my young life (I was only 14 years old then, so I only had baby-sitting money which is what I earned to pay for what I wanted to purchase at the record store). Also here locally (with our downtown Department Store along with our local Top 40 AM Radio station), these companies sponsored a trip for one teenage boy and one teenage girl to win a trip to London, England during the latter part of the year 1965, and the contest (write an essay, 500 words or less) with the theme, "Why I Want to London a Go-Go." I ended up being a runner-up for this contest (whereas one 18-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, both seniors in high school, won the "London a Go-Go" contest). They traveled to London for a one-week trip, chaperoned by one of the Top-40 AM Radio (WSAI-AM) Dee-Jays and his wife for this trip. Finally I got to attend a Beatles live concert in 1966 as well as see Herman's Hermits in person (at the OH State Fair) during the Summer of 1966. So, yeah, yeah, yeah, I was totally invested with the 1960's music scene !

'65, throughout, had such a cross-section of musical genres with many hits that remain classics to this day. As well it introduced many very innovative styles in instrumentation. Supremes, Beatles, 4 Tops, Temptations, Rolling Stones, Animals, Roger Miller, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin; Sony and Cher all continued and went on further to achieve even greater fame in the years that followed. To me '65 is likely the most unforgettable year in pop music history. A great year to be just14.

And my brother was born March 15th of 1965 and I do remember my mom taking me down town and I believe I would sing downtown with Petula Clark later that year I began watching "History Unfold" as America's first family in space left for Alpha certuri. and we also got Get smart in September and we would watch these shows as a small family in what became known as the golden years of television. Thanks for reminding me of those times as they were golden

I am thankful that I was 11 years old in 1965 than being 11 years old today in 2024. Perilous times. Those were happy days to be a kid and still live in innocence. Even with divorce in my family, moving and changing schools a dozen times in one year along with witnessing 3 suicide attempts by my mother, I am still thankful for that time in history. The happy and new exciting music got me through it all.

I turned 13 in March '65...it was a glorious time to be that age because every week seemed to be filled with great new songs in all genres...I had the cool Mom who took me and my friends to all the rock concerts, from Herman's Hermits and Freddie and the Dreamers to the Animals, and Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars with Martha and the Vandellas, Chad and Jeremy and others...awesome memories!

Looking at this you can see why us wrinkleys have so much contempt for this modern era. The 60s were a time of optimism . Many new types of music were being heard from black American Motown to Soul and British pop. We felt at that time that things were finally moving forward after the dreary post war years. God help us look at us now.

Talented musicians are still around, but the industry has changed beyond recognition since the 1960s. The corporations that run everything now have no interest in art. They only care about profit. The punk phenomenon in the late 70s largely eschewed big record labels and independents sprung up to distribute the music. We need the technologically updated version of that now, because most widely-available music in 2024 is crap.

I was born in 1953, so the music of the 60's is my life. Popular music, for me, went downhill in the 70's, so I switched to Country music for the 79's through the 90's. I've spent the rest of my life listening to the music of the 60's through oldies stations and Apple Music. I'm 70 now, and the 60's are such a wonderful memory for me. No other music compares !

Those really were some years of hope and optimism. There are some videos up of performances by the Seekers at Expo67. They bring me back to that year- I was there in 1967, but didn’t see the Seekers. Those videos do an excellent job of conveying the feeling of that era. And we were so innocent. Little did we know that 1968 would bring a shattering not seen since the Enlightenment.

As a guitar player in the bands in Liverpool it was a magical time that will NEVER be repeated, the problem with todays music is it's all suicide music, it makes people feel sad and depressed not happy and glad to be alive like the 60's, sorry but ther is still a load of happy music to be made you've just got to support the bands and singers that promote it and avoid supporting the singers of death and despair.

Perhaps the reason for so much culture emerging was because WWII was over. And so many people wanted to get back to living again. Most of the young people were well-cared for and this provided them with the assurance that they could participate and do anything they set out to do. That type of confidence has eroded over the years, especially as technology has overstimulated people to such an extent that they are ignoring or don’t have the skills that previous generations had. Just a thought! Thanks for posting.

I was only 4 1/2 at the time but was already a huge music fan, believe it or not. I had six older siblings, most of who were into music, my mom played the piano and my dad listened to top 40 radio and folk records. I had been around music since the day I was born. I had no idea how incredible that era was back then, it just seemed normal to me. By March 65 I was already a huge Beatles fan - my older siblings already had Meet The Beatles, The UA version of A Hard Day's Night, Something New and Beatles 65. At that time I thought Eight Days A Week, This Diamond Ring and King Of The Road were the greatest songs ever. I think Laugh Laugh was out around then as well, another one I loved. The Game Of Love was soon after. My brother bought the Stones' 12 x 5 around then as well. I was listening to some folk as well, my brother had albums by Peter, Paul and Mary and The Kingston Trio. Great memories of all that music. It was an amazing era and we'll never see anything like it ever again, but we can keep enjoying that music forever.
